Triband mesh may get better speed than repeater, if he can get the main node and mesh node have line of sight. Say put the mesh node outside the master room if possible, and probably move the main router slightly so that it can see the mesh node.
ya thanks xiaofan
i will get triband + trimesh to get e speed n to get easy LOS. will take note. will get m1 29.9 + linksys velop then

Correct. For repeater you need to have different SSID in general.

But one thing is common with repeater and mesh with wireless backhaul, the main router and the repeater or mesh node need to have good communication. That is why if you close the door you will get disconnection. If you get mesh and put the mesh node inside the room, when you close the door you may have similar issue.

So in a way, mesh with wireless backhaul has quite a major limitation on the placement of the mesh node, just like a repeater. Triband mesh does not sort out the placement issue, it only fixes the bandwidth issue of repeater and dual band mesh.
sigh LLST......

Need to change router again end of the year?
My wifi 6 Netgear orbi mesh, connected via LAN to an Intel nuc seed box seeding torrent nonstop at 15-30MB/sec, with 6 xiaomi cctv saving live footage into my NAS, and tons of connected smart devices etc..

I run SpeedTest on my phone thru wifi, still can get about 950-970mbps downstream maximizing my 1gbps connection already leh.. And 2ms latency..

So get wifi 6e for what ah? Unless our internet moves to 10gbps la

No point. I foresee the adoption of WiFi 6E will not be so fast. Device will start to appear this year. The main issue is the cost of router.

Wifi 6E router will need to be triband, 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz. You can see the only wifi 6E router announced is Asus GT-AXE11000 and it keeps being delayed.

As of now, even triband WiFi 6 routers are pretty expensive.

The only triband normal Asus WiFi 6 router (not geared toward mesh) is GT-AX11000. It is expensive. Then the mesh oriented RT-AX92U and Zenwifi XT8 are pretty expensive too.

King of the cheaper routers is TP-Link and only triband WiFi 6 router from TP-Link is Archer AX11000 which is again not cheap. There is no triband AX mesh routers from TP-Link yet.

Linksys Velop MX5300 is pretty expensive (S$788 a pair). But Linksys does offer MX4200 as the lower end triband AX Mesh -- still two units will not be cheap (not available in SG yet).

Same for Netgear. RAX200 is rated AX11000 and very expensive. Orbi RBK 852 is also very expensive. Cheapest is Orbi RBK752 AX4200 Mesh, but a pair still costs S$699.

Dingknows preview of Asus GT-AXE11000, world's first Wifi 6E router. It was supposed to be available late year 2020 but got delayed.

https://dongknows.com/asus-rog-rapture-gt-axe11000-wi-fi-6e-router-review/

Lowest end WiFi 6E router will probably rated AX3000.
2.4GHz: 574Mbps
5GHz: 1200Mbps
6GHz: 1200Mbps

A bit higher end will probably be AX4200.
2.4GHz: 574Mbps
5GHz: 1200Mbps
6GHz: 2400Mbps

And then AX5400.
2.4GHz: 574Mbps
5GHz: 2400Mbps
6GHz: 2400Mbps

For backward compatibility, tri-band is now a necessity. We need all of them to make sure a router will work with all existing clients. Though each band’s specs might vary, it’s safe to say all Wi-Fi 6E routers will have at least three bands (2.4GHz + 5GHz+ 6GHz).

Thanks for the in depth analysis, Xiaofan! And most importantly, you did not include any humble brag screenshots!

Depending on how many devices at home need it. If not yet on WiFi 6. Then I think best is wait.

Indeed. If one already has a good AC router or AC mesh solution, then it is perfectly fine to wait until late next year for better WiFi 6E solution.

Would you consider the velop triband mesh good? I am about to re-contract with M1 and considering whether to top up for the RT-AX88U.

Thanks

I will consider Velop Triband Mesh to be a decent AC Mesh solution. But it all depends on each individual, if your coverage and speed are fine, then there is no need to change.

However if you feel that the Velop Triband does not give your enough speed out of your (say 1Gbps) subscription for your devices (say WiFi 6 capable laptop), then you can consider to upgrade. RT-AX88U is a decent AX router and will not obsolete any time soon.

From M1 Facebook answer to existing customer:

Hi xx xx Lim, for recontract on 1Gbps Home Broadband @ $39.90 (24 months contract), will not be eligible for the above 2mth free promotion, instead you will be auto enrolled to a Router Replacement Offer (RRO). 😊 Under this offer, customer may replace their faulty router that is out of warranty at M1 Shop. 👍 - Maggie

Indeed the Facebook users are not happy with the answer.

Then again all major ISPs are like that, they try to attract customers to switch from other ISPs and not so much care about the loyal customers.

Starhub in this aspect seems to be the better one which gives relatively good deals for recontract customers, but you still need to negotiate with them to get a better recontract deal.

But all in all, nowadays if you just consider overall cost of ownership, it is usually not worth switching to other ISPs because of the NLT charges and other fees. So unless you are really unhappy, do not switch.

It's the same with most services, not just ISPs... No reward for loyal customers, only new customers get the better deals. Sometimes they have retention departments who will offer you something better if you call up to cancel the service.

They basically rely on the fact that a lot of people are inherently lazy, and will just continue using the same service indefinitely unless something prompts them to switch. There's a lot of users still using legacy phone plans complete with an ancient handset, users who remained on ADSL or analog phone lines right up until the point the service was totally discontinued and they were forced to switch etc. Every now and then you hear of an ISP somewhere dropping its dialup service, and the story gains attention because there are several thousand active subscribers being kicked off.
