DHT is in the blood circulation, no way Nizoral can zap on the DHT.
I doubt Nizoral can control DHT, its patented action is a specific fungi agent that target on a type of fungi that result in dandruff. I will just recommend H&S (used a Zinc compound as its active agent) as it is cheaper, nowadays like $10 for 750mL.

this is quoted from a medical webby "Nizoral is a potent anti-dandruff shampoo that also cleanses the scalp and prevents hair loss. Nizoral, a potent anti-dandruff shampoo shampoo, also helps to block the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is believed that DHT has a role in the hair follicle dying and falling out – and indeed, Nizoral does appear to prevent hair loss.

Furthermore, it is now believed that Nizoral helps to remove sebum deposits. These fatty deposits lie on the scalp and to clog the hair follicles and may prevent or reduce the nutritional supply to the follicle. Sebum deposits can not be removed with normal scalp cleansing techniques."

alot of hair lost webby n forums i go to actually recommend usage of nizoral 1% or 2% shampoo.......its up to u guys to decide whether it works or not......

Active ingredient in Nizoral Shampoo is Ketoconazole, an antifungal medication. It is like an antibiotic but is used to treat fungal infections.

Besides being used tropically on the scalp, Ketoconazole is also used orally as prescribed by doctors to treat yeast infections of the mouth, throat and other infections in body. It definitely has no action on DHT or 5-alpha-reductase.

The main use of nizoral is to treat dandruff but that doesnt mean it does not actually helps in treating hair loss.....n yeah Ketoconazole is the main ingredient but its not the one n only ingredient in the whole shampoo right? U can choose to believe wat u want to but wat doesnt work on u does not mean its useless to all. I wont argue wif u over dat matter. Ultimately there is no one shampoo that is capable to treat hair loss per se......most of them just claim to help slow down the process but not in regaining or growing of hair.

It is not a bad dandruff shampoo. But there is only one active ingredient in it, which is an anti fungi agent. There is also only one use for it, which is to treat dandruff, which it does pretty well.

Nizoral have a mild Anti-Androgen (reduces DHT levels in scalp) effect. it not been claim by nizoral itself as they need to do some expensive test to get FDA approve of it. Although it main function is for anti-dandruff, it does not mean it can't have side effect such as anti-androgen. just like finasteride in the first place is not intend to treat hairloss. but well, we have propecia now rite? DHT does find it way to the scalp not only in blood alone. DHT causes hair loss by attaching itself to receptor sites on the hair follicles. only hair on top have receptor sites that why you often see people losing hair still have hair on the side as these hair does not have receptor sites.

other reason why Nizoral might work is due to its Anti-Inflammatory (reduces process which causes follicle miniturization).

on a side note, i just realise in japan, they are selling propecia in both 1mg and 0.2mg version.

i believe here is the study that result in their decision. so for those taking propecia, you might want to split your pill for 0.5mg dose which should be just as effective as 1mg.

Where else can DHT come besides via the blood route to contact the hair follicles I really wonder? The mechanism by which finasteride inhibit 5 alpha reductase ia a convincing and proven one. But an anti-fungi agent like the active ingredient in Nizoral being an anti-DHT? By what means? Other than being a specific reductase inhibitor which is sure impossible, and the second possibility is competing for the DHT receptor site (I would think that is rather impossible also). There sure are compounds besides finasteride that may act like what are mentioned before, but an anti fungi agent should not have such properties. I am not familiar that Nizoral has any anti inflammatory effect so cannot comment on this. But there are sure other compounds that are better in this area.

The case for finasteride is a a sure fire one as it works both the same way as it is on the prostate and the follicle. Dun pin too much hope on nizoral as a DHT blocker or inhibitor because it has a low chance, near zero in fact.

my point is DHT does appear on the hair follicles through blood flow so any compound that affect DHT on scalp might provide some help whether big or small.

do a search. Ketoconazole has been proven to decrease the quantities of DHT in the scalp by helping to inhibit its synthesis from sterols. it is known that when ketoconazole is ingested orally that it inhibits the binding of androgens to receptors in the body and this would include the binding of DHT to hair-follicle receptors.

many other drugs like spironolactone for anti-hypertensive, azelaic acid for acne, certain zinc etc etc which original purpose is not intend for hairloss also know to have Anti-Androgen properties and is now been use for hairloss too.

even minoxidil which have been proven to increase hair grow have been discover by accident. it suppose to treat high blood pressure and how it help hair grow is not fully understand yet.

for those looking for minoxidil. i did a search and found that hospital is selling minoxidil cheaper if you have a prescription. some hospital will only sell it to you at a cheaper price if you got the prescription from them. called few of them up, and CGH allow external presciption.
they are selling the brand minoxi5 (80ml) at $36 which i got at $57.75 outside. but do take note that the brand and price might change from time to time.

very unlikely. don't worry too much.

pregaine is a good shampoo but it won't do anything for hair loss.

I really doubt there is any shampoo in the market currently that is capable of treating hair loss directly........i think majority of the shampoo just helps to improve the condition of the scalp n hair follicies. Basically if u are currently using minox or propecia then u might wanna consider using shampoos like nizoral or progaine as a form of "supplement".

Thanls for providing the link, I really appreciate that. I am convinced by the link between high blood pressure and increased hair loss. The link of the abstract you provided did not say much about how Ketoconazole can inhibit DHT synthesis (I wouldn't use the word proven). Personally, I will not place high hope on this one. If Ketoconazole can really locally reduce DHT level significantly in scalp it will be the medical news of the year put it this way. It will be a bigger thing than finasteride for male hair loss, cos finasteride is such a big money spinner for the pharmaceutical industry in the same class as Viagra. A lot of finasteride side effects are due to the result that it is not acting locally, a locally inhibitor will solve all the problems and make the result much more effective.

$40 is for 2% or 3% version? i saw the 5% version costly around $60.

i got presciption from my doctor and got minoxi5(80ml) for $37.80 which will last around 40days and proscar for $112.50. have been using propecia for more than 1years which cost $90 for 4weeks. now using proscar which will only cost around $28 for 4weeks.

hope to further reduce the price. if anyone got any good lobang, please let me know. hehe...
