NO NO NO

Don't think you are saving them by buying them out. It will only lead to more animals being bred & put through the same. Don't support them, let the shops die out.

Take pictures & evidence, call Spca, file report, create awareness, write proper letters to the authorities requesting for a written reply on the matter. Usually they have to at least respond. If enough people do it, they will be forced to look into the matter seriously.

Some four years ago, I bought my rabbit from this aquarium at bukit timah. It was then housed in a very harsh condition; the cage was rusty and filthy, and the food they feed are not the best for rabbits. I suspected that the rabbit was way underage to be sold (between 1 to 2 months). Thus I decided to buy it. The next thing I realised was the rabbit could not stop scratching itself, and at the same time I kept on sneezing and scatching when I handle her (I have multiple allergies). So we brought her to the vet.

It was there that I realise that the poor little rabbit had fungus infection and fur mites. The doctor was quite apprehensive about using frontline (if i didn't remember wrongly) on her because she was too young and small, even the slightest bit of it might put her life at risk. Thus we used a spray on medication that took a longer time to rid her of mites. The fungus infection never really got cured until two years later.

Then I started wondering if I didn't buy the rabbit and were to contact AVA instead, will they put the rabbit to sleep because it was deemed to be sick? I believe AVA will most probably not save the animals and put them up for adoption; I never heard of such kind acts before.

It's a hard choice, but I believe really depends on what can be done besides the buying or not, in this case in a Singapore context.

For me i do not believe i will ever buy them out unless there is no other recourse possible or the situation of the animal is dire. Perhaps, it is certain it will end there, say...the pet shop is closing down. But these are all highly unlikely scenarios.

We can't fault anyone for buying them out as it is a reflection of their kind hearts. And we all have different tolerances. But we need to consider if it will help all the other animals from the same source. If a shop owner knows he can sucessfully sell off an item in this condition, what are the chances he will try to improve the situation ? What if you do go back & find another replacement animal for sale, in the same condition.

It is really a case of choosing the lesser evil. But whichever, reporting needs to be done, to the right organisation of course.

Yeahs. I went back a few times to see and each time i just see more rabbits in the same state, and some are even worse because they've got skins problems etc. But I was glad that they downsized last year, probably business isn't that good.

Yah, I get your point. But the thing about small pets like hamsters, gerbils or rabbits is that some pet shops will kill them to save vet costs, because it's just not economically feasible for them as they're running a business. It's more profitable for them to let these animals breed and they can produce several litters a year.

So let's say if i were to threaten them about complaining to the authorities, they will 'get rid' of these animals themselves (and I've come across one that involves a farm near cck area), or if i were to complain to the authorities, these animals will still be put to sleep. Either way, these animals just have to sacrifice so as to eradicate such unethical business owners.

I just hope that the relevant authorites can be stricter on breeding farms and pet shops instead of owners rearing cats and dogs 'illegally' in hdb etc.

5 December 2004: 3 severely abused Shih Tzu's

From http://www.mettacats.org/abused_dogs.htm

On 5 December 2004, 3 abused Shih Tzu's and a decomposing carcass of a dog were discovered by one of our volunteers. The carcass was bloated, and was stuck in between a cage and a small platform. There were flies and many maggots crawling all over the decomposing carcass. The living conditions of the dogs were horrendous as the whole place was filled with faeces and urine which have been there for ages. There was only one pathetic bowl of water, which could not have been sufficient for one dog, let alone the four dogs. The bowl was covered with algae and the water was in a horrid greenish colour.
All three dogs were in horrifying condition, particularly the weakest one of the lot which we found sitting in a corner. We had also discovered that all three dogs were partially blind and had lost almost 80% of their fur. There was absolutely no proper shelter for the dogs and no signs of any food. In fact the dogs were found to be scavenging off the carcass of the fourth dog. It was evident that the dogs were neglected as maggots were found crawling out from their anuses and private parts.
The dogs were in such a bad state that the volunteers had initially thought that two dogs were dead because their bodies were in such a gruesome rotting state. Fortunately, they were still alive, but barely breathing. The volunteers then threw three large (400g) cans of dog food and the two dogs immediately started to fight for the food, despite their lack of strength. The weaker dog eventually fell to the floor, breathless and started to gasp for breath.
Eventually, the dogs were rescued and brought back to Mettacats and the weakest dog was sent to the vet. Unfortunately, she died on the 3rd day, despite the vet’s various attempts to save it.
The other 2 dogs are now under the care of Mettacats but require much medical attention. To date, the medical bills have mounted to almost $500 and sponsorships for these 2 dogs will be greatly appreciated.

The Shih Tzus’ conditions are so much better then when they were first brought in. A number of volunteers couldn’t bear to look at the pathetic sight of their abused bodies initially and many were outraged when they heard of the story of the abuse. But we are pleased to provide an update on the lively and adorable Shih Tzus to those kind souls out there who are concerned about their well-beings.

One will have to be well-prepared to behold the sight of the two Shih Tzu for both are far from the perfect commercial doggies which appear in magazines and televisions advertisements as the psychological and physical scars they suffered identify them from other dogs as the brave survivors from a cruel human act.

Cockatoo:

Then
2228437280083308754S200x200Q85.jpg

Now

The livelier one between the two and the one with a greedier appetite, it is naturally more playful and approachable. Its fur colour is that of raven black and white (pattern like cow’s patches). Most of the time it can get really “kaypoh” with the other dogs and volunteers but nevertheless very adorable and craves attention from humans. By first impression, it is seen as more affectionate than the other as it doesn’t get defensive with humans and often expresses that it wants a gentle pat from you.

Owl:

Then
2460531020083308754S200x200Q85.jpg

Now

Although partially blind in one eye, it is gentle and slightly meek than Cockatoo. Despite it suffering more serious abuse than Cockatoo, it bears a strong survival instinct and has conceived impressive strength in its own healing power. It has a mixture of hazelnut brown and white fur. Being as affectionate as Cockatoo, it loves being carried around like a small baby. Its will exhibit a coy and smiley look at you as you hug it safely in your hands.

Please look beyond the nicely decorated shop fronts of pet farms.

There are untold sufferings going on at the back where the dogs breed for the profit of Man.

Ever wonder what happened to dogs that no longer sell-able when they are sick, no longer cute puppy-like, exhibit behaviour problems, etc?

Do you think these unscrupulous pet farm operators will waste money on vet visits that can cost more than the price of the dog?

Ever wonder what happened to puppies born that are deformed or not good looking enough to be sold? Can anyone hear their cries at horrendous ways at which are they disposed of!?

Newly born puppies had been found in dustbins, some were still breathing!

So please, if you want a canine companion, adopt one from the shelter.

It gives more meaning to having an animal companion.

For every dog or puppy that is eventually sold, how many had and will continue to suffer?

When the buying stop, the suffering from human greed will also reduce.

The petfarms (which is really techincally 'puppy mills') tend to have a completely blocked off section. Covered up & not visible what is inside.

Naturally, the nicest looking puppies will be on display in the front, opened, customer section.

btw, those shih tzus were rescued by mettacat volunteers, where Bob is now at

some people may think that this kinda puppy mills dont happen in singapore. but the farms/petshops in singapore are RESULTS OF PUPPY MILLS

singapore petshops mostly import their dogs from overseas. thats where all the puppy mills are. these puppy mills breed their dogs all year round in disgusting conditions. conditions included small cramped WIRE CAGES with no flooring. minimal water and food. harsh conditions. most of the dogs in puppy mills are very weak cus they don get any exercise at all. all they do in their small cages is mate all day. and as a result, the puppies these dogs give birth to are very poor in health. they have diseases all over them and very bad health problems inherited from their parents.

when the dogs in the mills can reproduced anymore, they are often and usually abandoned like thrash and left to die on their own.

please for the sake of god, stop buying from petshops and farms.
save those animals in the pounds instead.
doesnt mean that when u buy a dog from a petshop or farm, u are saving the dog's life. NO!
when u buy dogs from the petshop, there will be a demand and the petshop/farms will just keeping bringing in dogs from overseas dog farms to sell. and the puppy mills overseas will just keep on breeding their dogs to cater to the demand! its a very vicious cycle!!!!

you do not buy animals you take care of them as they are like your pet brother or friend and you should take care of them like your own children as it is still a life whether animal or not
