The latest and greatest between 600 and 800W
PC Power & Cooling's Silencer has reigned as our enthusiast PSU of choice for ten months now, but how does it stack up against the latest crop of 600-800W PSUs on the market? We round up seven units from BFG, ePower, Enermax, Mushkin, OCZ, Thermaltake, and Zalman to find...

Silent PSUs: Fortron Versus Silverstone :
Passive Power Supplies In The Lab
If you want a computer to truly be silent, you need to use passive cooling http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_cooling components. Whereas passive cooling components are more frequently available in the graphics card http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_processing_unit and CPU sector, they are something of a niche market http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niche_market when it comes to power supplies. This is not really a surprise though, given that purely passive units are considerably more expensive than those with fans, and they generally provide relatively poorer performance as well.

Our test compares the Zen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen 400 from Fortron (FSP) with a power output of 400 watts, and the Nightjar 450 from Silverstone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silverstone which provides a maximum of 450 watts. Both models can be purchased for less than $200.

PRO82+ 385W, Corsair CX400W ?
The local market for quality <400W models is small
Create a demand and I am sure distro will bring them in
Cos most of the bros here prefers a substation for their PSU mar.......

385W is more than enough for most configurations........

Corsair TX750W Power Supply Review

The Corsair TX series has admittedly been in the market for a while, but we wanted to add another Corsair power supply to our pile of results. Corsair tends to be somewhat conservative with their power supplies, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Their highest output power supply is "only" 1000W, the previously tested HX1000W, and today we are reviewing the TX750W. All of their other power supplies are rated at 450W to 650W. It's nice to see that Corsair doesn't feel the need to follow the current market trend of pushing extremely high wattage power supplies on users.

Corsair power supplies come from two different ODMs, Seasonic and Channel Well (CWT). Both are very good manufacturers for high-end products, but Seasonic tends to be a more conservative company that doesn't want to grow their business too fast whereas CWT is kind of the opposite and is interested in selling a large number of power supplies through many different companies. Corsair blurs the boundaries between these ODMs, letting the two manufacturers produce different wattages for the same series.

Thermaltake TR2 QFan Series

The TR2 QFan series' claim to fame is limited to one area, and it's not even really a feature. What's so special? The series starts with a modest 300W unit, and ranges up to 500W in 50W increments. We will be looking at four of the units today -- everything except the top 500W model.

The QFan part of the name comes from the use of Thermaltake's patented fan design, which is supposed to decrease noise levels at higher fan speeds. Unfortunately, last time we looked the fan was just as noisy as any other fan design, but at least we can look forward to testing some decent power supplies that cater to users that don't need hundreds of watts of power. Finding good quality PSUs for this market has become increasingly difficult, and Thermaltake could step in to fill the void.

Enermax Revolution85+ 1050W

The Enermax Revolution 1050W is the second ~1000w Enermax unit we have seen and is poised to take the top spot from the Galaxy DXX series in Enermax' lineup. As a new unit in that 1000 watt lineup, what does the Revolution bring to the table besides just change for change's sake? Change can be good, but only when we know what that change is and what that change will do for us. As we see from Enermax' PR about the Revolution, the majority of this units change is centered around efficiency:

It is all about efficiency, so goes the public mind. But Jimmy Song, ENERMAX’ director of R&D and co-founder, wanted more than simply the highest efficiency in the modular server/workstation class: “Being 85+ efficient was the minimum goal for our engineers. I wanted them to create the best PSU series in any regard and to have a worthy successor to our 1kW-class defining GALAXY & GALAXY DXX series’. By it’s (sic) name we want to communicate the most shocking news to our competitors:

Corsair TX850 Power Supply

Power supplies come and go here at jonnyGURU.com, and of those power supplies few are more anticipated lately than those from Corsair. Today, I've just had another one land in my lap, the brand new TX850. You'll recall that the TX750 did very well here, and I confess my expectations for this one are very high. Then again, knowing Corsair's penchant for high quality power supplies at a good price, my expectations for them are always high.

Seasonic M12D 850W Review

Recently, a lot of fantastic units have been coming out around the 850W mark. Case in point, the Antec Signature 850W and the Corsair TX850 I reviewed last week. Now, Seasonic has decided they want into this market, and have sent me the brand new M12D 850W as proof of how serious they are about it. Let's get started with a few of the usual box pictures, and then we'll let my SM-268 load tester find out how serious Seasonic really is.

300W to 450W: 20 Power Supplies on the Test Bench

Many of you have been waiting for us to review more low-wattage power supplies. We have written about power consumption several times in the past, and we have made it clear to AnandTech readers that in most cases there is no need for a high output power supply when 400W to 500W units will do just fine. We picked a collection of such units from high-end manufacturers throughout the market, and in fact we received so many power supplies that we had to split the roundup into two parts. The first part will contain power supplies rated at 300W to 450W while the second part will focus on 500W to 550W units.
