Anyway, I'll try to watch those films you guys recommend. As I do not want the same thing to happen again, I will not reply to recommendations if I don't wanna add them as I don't want to offend anyone.

Cheers.

-----------------------------------

This list is not in any particular order and I will be constantly updating it.

I've been watching lots of past movies I've missed recently and realised that I have missed alot of gems. This list is meant for ordinary movie watchers rather than movie buffs who most probably have watched everything.

I will be updating this list by memory whenever a great movie comes up in my mind.

Feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions and I will try to watch them if they interests me. I'll add them in if I really like them.

Here goes.

-----------------------------------

Memento (2000)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209144/

A man, suffering from short-term memory loss, uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife.

A Christopher Nolan Classic probably missed by alot of people out there. Nolan is one of my favourtie director, and together with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, they just keep churning out great movies. This is definitely the first movie that came to my mind when I decided to write this list.

-----------------------------------

The Machinist (2004)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361862/

An industrial worker who hasn't slept in a year begins to doubt his own sanity

I was shocked the moment Christian Bale appeared on screen. Most of us watched Christian Bale on movies like Batman Begins, Dark Knight and most likely the cult classic, Equilibrium. This shows how much Bale is willing to put forth for his acting career. I'm pretty sure most will not know it's him if not for the opening credits.

He lost almost 30 KGs for this film. One can never imagine Bale as a paranoia, depressive, underweight man. Fantastic acting by Bale and a true psychological thriller plot.

-----------------------------------

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338013/

A couple undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories when their relationship turns sour, but it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.

This is a multiple award winning film (yes, and one academy award too) which most Singaporeans missed. It is in the top 10 lists of most critics if you bother to do a search. This film is one of the best Jim Carrey ever made, as claimed by Carrey himself.

-----------------------------------

The Prestige (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482571/

Robert and Alfred are rival magicians. When Alfred performs the ultimate magic trick, Robert tries desperately to find out the secret to the trick.

Putting this movie in the list is definitely a hard decision. Don't get me wrong, it's a great movie, adapted by both Christopher & Jonathan Nolan. It's hard because this is actually quite a popular movie. But after some research, I realised alot of Singaporeans gave this a miss.

Let's face it, with a title like The Prestige, a synopsis like 2 magicians trying to find out each other's secret, this movie sure sounded boring. But I was utterly wrong, and those of you who decided to give this a miss too. A fast paced movie with a fantastic, and I mean fantastic twist ending. Everyone loves twist endings ever since The 6th Sense. DO NOT give this a miss.

-----------------------------------

Mr Brooks (2007)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780571/

A psychological thriller about a man who is sometimes controlled by his murder-and-mayhem-loving alter ego.

This is not your ordinary serial killer movie. It's smart and at the same time eerie. The ending gave me chills, sending me screaming for more. Mr Brooks is meant to be a trilogy and I can't wait for the sequel.

-----------------------------------

Man On Fire (2004)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0328107/

In Mexico City, a former assassin swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect.

Good old Denzel Washington. I'm not sure of the popularity of this movie, but because of the recent Taken hype, I've decided to add this it. When I first watched Taken, I was surprised at how much Taken is similar to Man On Fire and no one noticed it. In my opinion, Taken is a lousy copy of Man On Fire. This is a must watch for all who liked Taken.

-----------------------------------

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066921/

In future Britain, charismatic delinquent Alex DeLarge is jailed and later volunteers for an experimental aversion therapy developed by the government in an effort to solve society's crime problem... but not all goes to plan.

You probably missed this movie because it's banned in Singapore. I don't usually watch movies from the 70s but this is a gem. I loved the novel and searched desperately for this. Great plot and the movie that started the whole UltraViolence in cinema history.

-----------------------------------

K-PAX (2001)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0272152/

Prot is a patient at a mental hospital who claims to be from a far away planet. His psychiatrist tries to help him, only to begin to doubt his own explanations.

Yet another great novel adaptation on the big screen. I'm pretty sure most locals gave this a miss because of the title. And from my research, I'm not even sure if this is released in our theaters. In here, you'll see the classic Kevin Spacey performance. Outperforming himself than his roles in The Usual Suspects (1995) and American Beauty(1999)

-----------------------------------

Identity (2003)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0309698/

Stranded at a desolate Nevada motel during a nasty rainstorm, ten strangers become acquainted with each other when they realize that they're being killed off one by one.

If I was to read the sypnosis of this movie, I would have give it a miss. It sounds like your typical screamer/slasher film. But thankfully, I found this film in some Top 10 Twist Ending film. This is not your typical "I Know What You Did Last Summer" film, but a clever psychological thriller with a fantastic poem in it. You just have to watch this. You'll be cracking your brain throughout the whole film.

"While I was going up the stairs, I met a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. I wish, I wish he'd go away.

-----------------------------------

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405296/

An undercover cop in a not-too-distant future becomes involved with a dangerous new drug and begins to lose his own identity as a result.

An adaptation of Sci-Fi legend Philip K Dick's novel. Those familiar with Philip K Dick's stories (Blade Runner, Minority Report) will know that Philip writes great Sci-Fi that really screws up your mind. But in this case, A Scanner Darkly was a work close to Philip's heart which he wrote in memory of many people and himself.

The film version features Hollywood biggest stone face in the modern age, Keanu Reeves. But thanks to the way this film is produced (Shot and animated with rotoshop), we actually get to see some facial expression from him here. Nevertheless, Keanu Reeves was perfectly casted for his role.

-----------------------------------

The Usual Suspects (1995)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114814/

A boat has been destroyed, criminals are dead, and the key to this mystery lies with the only survivor and his twisted, convoluted story beginning with five career crooks in a seemingly random police lineup.

This is both a cult classic and a very popular film. I've decided to add this in because it's almost 15 year old and alot of the younger generation may have missed it

This film secured Kevin Spacey as an A-List star and won him an academy award. This film was popular for it's twist ending for a couple of years before 6th sense came along which literally buried this gem from the younger generations.

-----------------------------------

American History X (1998)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120586/

A former neo-nazi skinhead tries to prevent his younger brother from going down the same wrong path that he did.

I'm sure most people here will agree that American History X is a classic. Even after a decade, I still find this an incredibly strong film. I took attention of Edward Norton after this film. And decided that he is a fantastic actor after Fight Club (1999) I guess most of us remember the notorious "Curb Stomp" scene. If I remember correctly, MediaCorp aired this film before but i bet it's heavily censored. This is definitely one of the must watch film in this list.

-----------------------------------

Oldboy (2003)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/

After being kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must find his captor in 5 days.

I'm someone who hates to rewatch films more than twice. But I watched Oldboy 5 times. This is a powerful film which will send your senses haywire. Lots of taboos are touched in this film and most will find the ending disturbing.
It's really sad that this film is banned in Singapore. Nevertheless, one of the best film I've watched in my life so far and is definitely in the top of my list of recommendations.

-----------------------------------

12 Monkeys (1995)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114746/

In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.

I remember as a kid, I used to rent lots of Hollywood LDs to watch and I've seen 12 monkeys lots of time but never rented it. The poster looks too eerie for a young kid like me. I've decided to give it a go a few months ago and loved it. Brad Pitt is fantastic in here. I've came to realise that Brad Pitt used to be a fantastic actor and is getting bad recently.

A film with a nice ending that will make you rewatch the film again almost immediately. Like the way Memento does.

-----------------------------------

Two For The Money (2005)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417217/

After suffering a career-ending injury, a former college football star aligns himself with one of the most renowned touts in the sports-gambling business.

Most of us know Matthew McConaughey as the stereotyped Romantic Comedy actor. But this film will prove you wrong. One of the best film Matthew McConaughey ever did with a great co-star like Al Pacino who has never failed us. In this time of recession, this is a nice film to remind us not to overdream and stay in touch with reality.

-----------------------------------

The Firm (1993)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106918/

A young lawyer joins a prestigous law firm only to discover that it has a sinister dark side.

An adaptation of the novel that kick started John Grisham career. Although it may not be as good as the book, I pretty much liked the ending in the film version.

-----------------------------------

Training Day (2001)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0139654/

On his first day on the job as a narcotics officer, a rookie cop works with a rogue detective who isn't what he appears as.

This is the film that broke Denzel Washington away from his stereotyped casting ever since his success in Malcolm X. His portrayal as a villian is stunning. He did it so well that the character is voted as one of the top villians on many lists you can find online. The whole film is set in a single day, and what a hell of a day this is.

-----------------------------------

The Hurricane (1999)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0174856/

The story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a boxer wrongly imprisoned for murder, and the people who aided in his fight to prove his innocence.

I've come to notice that most Singaporeans doesn't watch biopics because half of the time, they do not know the person that is portrayed. But hell were they wrong. It really doesn't matter whether you know the person or not, the film just keeps you going.

The Hurricane is another great performance by Denzel Washington.

-----------------------------------

Snatch (2000)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0208092/

Unscrupulous boxing promoters, violent bookmakers, a Russian gangster, incompetent amateur robbers, and supposedly Jewish jewelers fight to track down a priceless stolen diamond.

Before there's Layer Cake, before there's RocknRolla, THERE'S SNATCH. Guy Ritchie almost single handedly revolutionize the British Film Industry with "Snatch" and "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels".

Fantastic clever dialogues that will make you laugh your ass off. An amazing screenplay. A well written plot. And a truly incredible ensemble cast.

-----------------------------------

Joint Security Area (JSA) (2000)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0260991/

In the DMZ separating North and South Korea, two North Korean soldiers have been killed, supposedly by one South Korean soldier...

This film smashed box office records in South Korea when it was released. It's amazing how many different emotions a single film like this can bring. The tension between the North and the South, the human drama, the unlikely friendship, the thrill of breaking the taboo and the eventual sadness.

Sadly, this film only achieved moderate success outside South Korea due to the fact that many foreigners do not relate to the separation of Korea. The tension at the DMZ. Nevertheless, this is a good watch that will set you thinking for a long long time.

-----------------------------------

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120735/

Four London working class stiffs pool their money to put one in a high stakes card game, but things go wrong and they end up owing half a million pounds and having one week to come up with the cash.

This is the second film i'm recommending by Guy Ritchie, who is one of the finest director from England. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is the mother of Snatch, Revolver & RocknRolla. This is the film that started it all. The film that threw Guy Ritchie, Jason Statham and Vinnie Jones into international fame. Making Guy Ritchie a cult director.

As with all Guy Ritchie's film, this one has clever funny dialogues, coincidences and a fantastic plot. This is a must watch.

-----------------------------------

Hard Candy (2005)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424136/

A mature 14-year old girl meets a charming 32-year old photographer on the Internet. Suspecting that he is a pedophile, she goes to his home in an attempt to expose him.

How many good movies have you seen that was produced with a budget under $1million. Hard Candy is definitely one of those. Ellen Page, who is definitely one of the best young actresses out there, did incredibly well in this film. By comparing her portrayal in Juno and Hard Candy, you'll be amazed at how versatile she is. I'm more impressed by her performance in Hard Candy than in Juno.

With just 5 casts in this film and 3 of them being cameos, it's amazing how intriguing this film is. Ellen Page basically carried this whole film on her back and made it work. I'm keeping my eyes on Ellen Page from now on.

-----------------------------------

Unleashed/Danny The Dog (2005)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0342258/

A man raised into behaving like a dog, escapes from his captor to start a new life, who seeks to reclaim him because of his unnatural martial arts skills that are triggered when unleashed.

This is the best Jet Li film EVER in my opinion. It has more emotions and drama than any of his film with a very good plot and concept. I got attracted to watch this film after reading that this is one of the only few Jet film that deals with more drama than fighting scenes. I like Jet's films but never appreciated his acting ability, but Unleashed changed my opinion of him. This is about the only english film that didn't star him as a villian with an emotionless face.

It doesn't matter whether you hate or like Jet Li, just watch this.

-----------------------------------

Alpha Dog (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0426883/

A drama based on the life of Jesse James Hollywood, a drug dealer who became one of the youngest men ever to be on the FBI's most wanted list.

There are so many films based on true life crimes but not many really leaves an impression on us. Alpha Dog definitely did. A bunch of kids in their late teens commited a stupid mistake and this film brings us through the days of what happened.
I watched this film with absolutely no idea of what crime was commited and I have to say I was blown away by it. Watching it without knowing anything kept me on the edge of my seat, grinding my teeth and thinking what are they going to do.

I can't elaborate more but watch this. Start googling and wiki-ing like what I did after the film.
P.S: Once again, Justin Timberlake showed that he is not just a good singer, but a great actor too.

-----------------------------------

Max Manus (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029235/

The true story about one of the most brilliant saboteurs during World War II and his battle to overcome his inner demons.

I find myself really lucky to have stumbled upon this Norwegian gem while shopping for blurays. This is my first Norwegian film and am i amazed. It's a beautifully crafted film about a World War II resistance fighter not known outside Norway fighting for his country. I would not have known such world war heroes if not for this film. This is a recommendation for those who are interested in World War II.

-----------------------------------

The Illusionist (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443543/

In turn-of-the-century Vienna, a magician uses his abilities to secure the love of a woman far above his social standing.

I'll have to admit, I decided to watch this film because of how much I loved The Prestige. And I have no regrets. In a sense, this film is on par with The Prestige.
A gripping storyline which got me glued to the screen from start to finish, cancelling any phone calls that I had incoming, this film is a masterpiece. Beautifully crafted. The synopsis doesn't do this film justice. You have to watch it to love it. 5/5 from me.

-----------------------------------

PTU (2003)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250638/

Over the course of one night, a team of cops frantically search for their colleague's missing gun.

PTU is a perfect film. A Film Noir in colour. Directed by Johnnie To (Election, Exiled), I simply love the film. It explores the relationship between cops and triads with minimal dialogues. Despite the small amount of dialogue, the film is able to pull me onto the screen for the whole 90mins. As expected from Johnnie To, this is a film not to be missed.

-----------------------------------

The Escapist (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0961728/

Frank Perry is an institutionalized convict fourteen years into a life sentence without parole. When his estranged daughter falls ill...

We love prison films. We love to see people escaping from prisons. So is there a reason to miss The Escapist? No. Is it a repeat of the same old scenario like in Shawshank and Midnight Express? No. Will this film blow you away? Hell yes. It definitely blew me away. I was pondering while watching this film if I should add it to the list. The final 5 mins sealed my decision.

-----------------------------------

Exam (2009)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1258197/

Eight talented candidates have reached the final stage of selection to join the ranks of a mysterious and powerful corporation. Entering a windowless room, an Invigilator gives them eighty minutes to answer one simple question. He outlines three rules they must obey or be disqualified: don't talk to him or the armed guard by the door, don't spoil their papers and don't leave the room. He starts the clock and leaves.

For those who have followed my list should know that I am a sucker for psychological thrillers. The synopsis of this film made me get the film right away and I'm glad I watched it. It says alot when a film with a single location is able to make someone glued to the screen.

-----------------------------------

Unthinkable (2010)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0914863/

A psychological thriller centered around a black-ops interrogator and an FBI agent who press a suspect terrorist into divulging the location of three nuclear weapons sets to detonate in the U.S.

This is a powerful film. It made many of our beliefs and morals go down the drain. It sets you thinking if it's right to keep to our morals or we should do anything to save the lives of others. It makes you feel guilty no matter what you choose.

-----------------------------------

The Book of Eli (2010)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1037705/

A post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.

Many thinks that Denzel Washington is different in this film. But I believe there is no one, no one but Denzel Washington could have portrayed the main character. I decided to watch this film after reading Roger Ebert's review stating "You won't be sorry you went. It grips your attention, and then at the end throws in several WTF! moments, which are a bonus."

And yes. This film has one of the best twists I've seen in a long time. It's a long time since I've found a film where the twist was something I couldn't expect at all. Until the very last minute. Watch it and you will not regret.

-----------------------------------

Death Sentence (2007)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0804461/

Nick Hume is a mild-mannered executive with a perfect life, until one gruesome night he witnesses something that changes him forever. Transformed by grief, Hume eventually comes to the disturbing conclusion that no length is too great when protecting his family.

I've watched this film twice. And I totally forgot about watching it the first time until the second time I watch it. It reminded me how fantastic this film is. Kevin Bacon's performance in this film is one of the best. Emotional, fear, aggressive, sadness, anger, Kevin Bacon portrayed it all perfectly. "Death Sentence" mixes thriller, drama, family, action and gore all in one. Not to mention it has an incredible soundtrack.

-----------------------------------

The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452694/

A romantic drama about a Chicago librarian with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage.

This has got to be the greatest love story I've ever seen. And I believe it's the first film in this list that has a love theme.

Yes, this is definitely not the best film in terms of science fiction, they never bothered to explain the reason behind the time travelling, but even for someone like me who usually nitpicks on loopholes didn't really care about the explanations. I enjoyed this film thoroughly and I believe I wouldn't be able to control my emotions that well if I've watched it in the cinema.

Many said the novel is better and since I already love the film so much, I gonna read the book next.

-----------------------------------

An American Crime (2007)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0802948/

The true story of suburban housewife Gertrude Baniszewski, who kept a teenage girl locked in the basement of her Indiana home during the 1960s.

Based on the true story on the torture and death of Sylvia Marie Likens, this is a film that I will be talking about for a long time to come. Despite the lack of gore, the film is still extremely disturbing as to what humans are do to another human being who have done them no harm. Especially when the executors were mostly mere children and teenagers.

I've always viewed Ellen Page as a prodigy and she is amazing in this movie. I've decided that she is my favourite actress after watching this film. This film is a good contrast to her character in "Hard Candy" which is also in this list. In "Hard Candy", she is the torturer and in "An American Crime" she portrays the tortured. And am I amazed that she is did extremely well in both roles.

This film is highly recommended. Watch it for Ellen Page's amazing performance, the gruesome crime dubbed the "most terrible crime ever committed in the state of Indiana" and the sadistic side of humans.

-----------------------------------

Gone Baby Gone (2007)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452623/

Two Boston area detectives investigate a little girl's kidnapping, which ultimately turns into a crisis both professionally and personally. Based on the Dennis Lehane novel.

Adapted from the novel by Dennis Lehane, the author behind Mystic River and Shutter Island, you know you will not miss this film.

"Gone Baby Gone" builds up a strong backdrop in the first half of the film, takes you on an emotional ride in the second and finally leaves you debating within your own heads. "Gone Baby Gone" resembles Mystic River but is more powerful with a theme that is closer to the world around us.

-----------------------------------

The Experiment (2010)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0997152/

26 men are chosen to participate in the roles of guards and prisoners in a psychological study that ultimately spirals out of control.

This film is a remake of a 2001 German film titled "Das Experiment" which I have not watch yet and am planning to in a few days time.

Both films are based on the actual 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment which has always fascinated me ever since I first read about it a couple of years ago. I was extremely excited when I found out that there are films made about it.

I'll recommend everyone who plans to watch this film read about the Stanford Prison Experiment first to truly understand the theme of this film. Meanwhile, I'll watch Das Experiment as soon as possible and I believe it'll be added onto this list soon.

-----------------------------------

Lucky Number Slevin (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425210/

A case of mistaken identity lands Slevin into the middle of a war being plotted by two of the city's most rival crime bosses: The Rabbi and The Boss. Slevin is under constant surveillance by relentless Detective Brikowski as well as the infamous assassin Goodkat and finds himself having to hatch his own ingenious plot to get them before they get him.

As an avid fan of Guy Ritchie's films, I can't help but notice how similar "Lucky Number Slevin" is to many of his films after watching the trailer. And I'm not wrong. Although the dialogue isn't as humorous as those in Guy Ritchie's films, the way the plot unfolds is pretty much the same which is what made those films fantastic.

The cinematography is beautiful, the dialogues are clever and the ending is well woven. And just when you think you've gotten the whole picture, it throws you a surprise piece of the puzzle that you seem to missed.

PS: "Kansa City Shuffle" is actually a pretty interesting "Plot" Element

-----------------------------------

The Man From Earth (2007)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/

An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he is an immortal who has walked the earth for 14,000 years.

This film is so good that I do not even know how to start.

I was searching around for films to watch when this title pop up in front of me. Reading the synopsis lead me to do a search on it in IMDB and I was shock to see a score of 8.1/10. A rare feat in IMDB.

The whole film sets in the home of the Professor and the conversation between him and his colleagues. It's amazing how a film with no actions, no special effects and everything is presented with mere words is able to draw me into it. I didn't even wanna pause it to go to the washroom.

With revelations after revelations made by John Oldman that will make you go WTF, you'll wish the film doesn't end.

The final twist in the film is totally unexpected and is definitely the biggest WTF moment.

I'm ready to give this film a 10/10. Something I have not done despite having a long list of recommendations here.

-----------------------------------

Find Me Guilty (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419749/

Based on the true story of Jack DiNorscio, a mobster who defended himself in court for what would be the longest mafia trial in U.S. history.

"Vin Diesel as a mobster with hair? You gotta be kidding me." This was what went through my mind and I'm pretty sure many others when we first read about this film. Just catching Vin Diesel with hair on is already worth a watch.

But surprisingly, it worked. Vin Diesel is absolutely charming in here. His character, Jackie, is a quick-witted, uneducated and to an extend, naive mobster who fired his lawyer and chose to defend his case after refusing to rat on any of his friends who were indicted in the same trial.

Vin Diesel has proven himself that he is not just a musclehead, he is not just an action star, he is in fact, a very talented actor. I'm sure his performance in this film will blow you away.

-----------------------------------

City of God (2002)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/

Two boys growing up in a violent neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro take different paths: one becomes a photographer, the other a drug dealer.

"City of God" is a highly acclaimed film around the world but sadly isn't as well exposed in Singapore. Ask any film buffs around you and they will tell you that this is one of the greatest film ever. I've included "City of God" in this list as I've decided to bring this list into a different direction.

As a legendary film and with an IMDB score of 8.8, I don't think I'll need to write a detailed review so I'll just keep it simple.

Everything about this film is close to perfection. The cinematography, the script, the screenplay, the editing, the soundtrack and the amazing bunch of young actors and actresses who have no prior acting experiences. (YES. NO EXPERIENCES. I know you wouldn't believe it but it's true. Most of them are from the slums and yet displayed such stunning performances. Sounds familiar?)

The film explores the outcast neighbourhood known as "Cidade de Deus" from the 60s to the 80s. The violence and crimes between the gangs ignored by the government of that time. "City of God" will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to end.

PS: I'll recommend reading the trivia after watching the film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/trivia

-----------------------------------

Four Lions (2010)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1341167/

Four Lions tells the story of a group of British jihadists who push their abstract dreams of glory to the breaking point. As the wheels fly off, and their competing ideologies clash, what emerges is an emotionally engaging (and entirely plausible) farce. In a storm of razor-sharp verbal jousting and large-scale set pieces, Four Lions is a comic tour de force; it shows that-while terrorism is about ideology-it can also be about idiots.

Jihad satire became really popular ever since the appearance of Jeff Dunham's Achmed the Terrorist, poking funs at imaginary Jihadist terrorists. But something is really different about "Four Lions".

Despite it being a comedy, behind all the laughs and idiocy, the film actually gives a very different view point of extremists. Director Chris Morris wrote the script with the Muslims in mind ensuring that anyone who watches it will be entertained and not leave a bad after taste for muslims like what most Jihad satires do.

"Four Lions" is a fantastically crafted, true comedy and is a refreshing getaway from popular Hollywood grossed-out parody films that seems to forget the true essence of comedy.

-----------------------------------

Revolver (2005)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365686/

Gambler Jake Green enters into a game with potentially deadly consequences.

This film has been critically panned by many critics around the world. Despite being a Guy Ritchie film, I kept delaying watching it due to the reviews. But I've decided to watch it recently and I have to say that I disagree with all the critics that disliked this film.

Although this film is different from other Guy Ritchie's film, there is still a hint of it in the way it's presented. Guy Ritchie is trying to tell us something really important about ourselves with this film but he doesn't explicitly tell you what it is. I'm not sure if those interviews that are shown during the credits were included during the theatrical release or if it's added for the DVD and Blu-Ray release. But I sure know that I wouldn't have understood the film without them.

After realizing what the film is trying to tell us during the credit scenes, I find "Revolver" to be pretty enlightening. Reminding you of something that you knew all along about yourself but chose to ignore it.

Moon (2009)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/

Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.

"Moon" is a piece of Sci-Fi work that revives the true meaning of Sci-Fi which seems to be forgotten by Hollywood. Gone are the boring aliens of modern Sci-Fi, mind boggling inventions and unbelievable future society.

Instead of putting it's little twist at the ending, "Moon" has it's twist right in the middle of the film and shows us how the twist altered the course of the character(s). It's refreshing especially when how almost every film nowadays made use of a twist ending.

"Moon" is a film of ideas, humans, a little drama and the whole concept can be pretty eerie if you spend some time thinking about it. The director has plans to make this film a trilogy with the sequel already announced and I will be looking forward to it.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1379177/

Two men fortify a nondescript British apartment so it can serve as a prison, and then kidnap a woman and tie her to a bed. Before there's even time to react, we're plunged into a very nasty situation, but not a simple one.

This film is engaging in so many different ways. The 3 actors in the film gave top notch performances. Especially Gemma Arterton, whom we've seen in "Prince of Persia", who clearly is the star of this film.

The script is extremely well written with a couple of excellent twists which are hard to see coming and the plot is super focused and tight. We're presented with twists again and again that we can no longer guess the ending as it can go so many different ways. But ultimately, the actual ending is pretty disappointing. But I will still recommend this to all thriller fans.

Frequency (2000)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0186151/

An accidental cross-time radio link connects father and son across 30 years. The son tries to save his father's life, but then must fix the consequences.

"Frequency" has to be one of the top Time Travel film of all time. It's not exactly a time travelling film but well, it kinda falls under the same category.

The concept was extremely original and the script well written. You kinda expect lots of loopholes in any Time Travel films but "Frequency" covered most of them pretty well. It saves you from lots of crappy scientific explanation and jumps straight into the action. The story is gripping and at the same time, heartwarming.

The whole film kept me at the edge of my seat wanting to know what is going to happen next. With a few surprises here and there, there's absolutely no way to guess the outcome of the movie. "Frequency" definitely deserves a spot on this list and I should have added it in earlier.

-----------------------------------

Blow (2001)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0221027/

The story of George Jung, the man who established the American cocaine market in the 1970s.

"Blow" should have been in the list long ago. I've always thought that it's already in here until I check recently.

I've watched this film 3 times over the past couple of years and I'm fascinated by George Jung's life every single time I watch it. No one could have portrayed George Jung better than Johnny Depp. I'm pretty sure this film wouldn't be as good if Johnny Depp wasn't starred as the title character.

George Jung's life was meant to be a movie. His life as a college dropout who loves smoking weed to his life as the biggest cocaine smuggler in Amerca is amazing. And "Blow" covered almost all of it. You'll get to see the transition of a talented young man who wants to get rich to one of the most important man in Pablo Escobar's Medellín Cartel and his ultimate downfall.

This is the only Biopic I can think of that I've watched more than once. Especially when I'm not a re-watcher of movies, this tells you alot about how good "Blow" is.

-----------------------------------

Vanilla Sky (2001)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0259711/

A successful publisher finds his life taking a turn for the surreal after a car accident with a jaded lover.

Here's another classic that I'll be adding to the list. I believe many have heard of it, but most didn't watch it.

Before "Matrix", "Shutter Island" and "Inception", there was a spanish film titled "Abre los ojos", meaning "Open Your Eyes". It was remade into "Vanilla Sky" which I think will be a better choice to appear on this list as it's in english and it's very closely adapted to the original film.

"Vanilla Sky" is, if I have to say it explicitly, a total mindfugging film. It's hard to tell you why and write a review without spoiling it. It's best not to even read about the genre of the film. Just when you are totally confused while watching the film, Tom Cruise screamed whatever you are thinking for you on screen, "What the **** is happening!?".

In order not to spoil it for anyone, I will not continue writing my views. Just watch it if you liked my usual recommendations.

PS: Here's some very interesting trivia to read after you've finished the film. http://web.archive.org/web/200406061...ky/secrets.htm

-----------------------------------

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073486/

Upon arrival at a mental institution, a brash rebel rallies the patients together to take on the oppressive Nurse Ratched, a woman more a dictator than a nurse.

Jack Nicholson's finest role. "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" is the second film to win the Top 5 Oscars (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay).

Adapted from the novel of the same name, this film has excelled in almost every part of it. Great acting, a good screenplay, a believable story and a surprise yet disturbing ending.

I've included this in the list mainly because I believe many people wouldn't take the time to catch a movie that is over 3 decades old and I think this film, which is hailed by many as an all-time classic, is something film lovers shouldn't miss.

-----------------------------------

Rescue Dawn (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462504/

A US Fighter pilot's epic struggle of survival after being shot down on a mission over Laos during the Vietnam War.

Christian Bale is a man who truly loves acting and is extremely devoted to his art. He shed weight for Rescue Dawn, but unlike "The Machinist", the film started out with Christian Bale a healthy man and gradually succumb to starvation. Although the film is shot in reverse because gaining weight is easier than losing it, it's still amazing seeing how all the actors in there go through the weight change.

Based on a true story of a German-American pilot named Dieter Dengler who got captured as a POW, "Rescue Dawn" is an extremely emotional ride. Unlike most war films, "Rescue Dawn" focuses and explores the emotional state of those captured and the hell they went through. But it seems that the director didn't want to glorify the prisoners' woes by toning down the torture scenes and apparently omitted some of the worst tortures the actual pilot faced. Making this film easier to watch for the average audience.

But despite all these, I find that the film has captured the emotions of the prisoners really well. Especially the fantastic acting by Christian Bale who seems willing to do anything to bring his art to the world.

Special thanks to Wryer who recommended this film.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808506/

A teenage girl finds that she has the ability to leap through time. With her newfound power, she tries to use it to her advantage, but soon finds that tampering with time can lead to some rather discomforting results.

There were many fantastic animated films from Japan in the past. But there isn't really many worth mentioning in the 21st Century other than Spirited Away and Paprika. "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" has got to be the best animated film since Spirited Away.

It's amazing how it managed to keep a time travelling film so simple but yet gripping and thought invoking. And the film is littered with hints that opens the whole story to many different theories depending on how you want to interpret it. Despite doing that, the film isn't confusing at all and can be watched as it is unless you wanna google out discussions online and have a theory of your own.

Most time travelling films involves changing the world, travelling way back into the past and the distant future. But "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" kept it simple by giving the power to time travel to a simple high school girl whose only wish is to use it to have fun and alter little insignificant events in her life.

A sequel to a popular novel in the 1960s titled "Toki o Kakeru Shoujo", "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" is one animated film not to be missed.

-----------------------------------

W. (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1175491/

A chronicle on the life and presidency of George W. Bush.

From the director who brought us "JFK", "Nixon" & "Wall Street", "W." was clearly overshadowed by other biopics in 2008 like "Milk" & "Frost/Nixon".

Initially, I was confused as to why Josh Brolin was casted as Bush despite very little resemblance between them. But I was wrong. Josh Brolin's portrayal eats on you. As the film goes on, you begin to believe that Josh Brolin is George Bush. His portrayal is so good I think they should have at least nominated him for an Oscar.

No matter what views you have on one of the most hated US President in history, you may change it after watching "W." If you hated him all along, you may give him some sympathy at the end of it, if you liked him, you may change your mind.

-----------------------------------

Leon: The Professional (Director's Cut) (1994)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110413/

Professional assassin Leon reluctantly takes care of 12-year-old Mathilda, a neighbor whose parents are killed, and teaches her his trade.

This is a film that will set alot of tongues wagging. So much so that the director removed almost 20 minutes of footage for the theatrical release in the US because Amercians were deemed too sensitive. Which is why I'm recommending the Director's Cut, or known as the International Version, because it contains 20 minutes of extra footage that is important to the plot.

It's controversial not because of gore or anything like it. What's controversial is the fact that we have a 12 year old girl who is smoking, cursing, trained to kill, portrayed as sexy and having sexual tension with a man in his 40s. But it's because of this girl that made the whole film attractive. One look and you'll know that this girl will grow up to be a great actress. And she did. The girl is Natalie Portman in her debut film at a mere 12 years of age.

The soundtrack and the cinematography of "Leon" works together so well that it brought the mood of the film perfectly or otherwise it would have ruin the emotional aspect of it. The interaction between Natalie Portman and Jean Reno is definitely the main core of this movie and we do not want any loud music or action to spoil it all.

I can go on and on to write a full review of "Leon" but I would like to keep this short. Even though it's a 1994 movie, it doesn't feel dated at all due to the plot so don't worry about it. It feels just like a film released in 2010.

-----------------------------------

Easy A (2010)

http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt1282140/

A clean-cut high school student relies on the school's rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing.

Before you get turned off just by reading the genre of this film, "Easy A" isn't your typical teen romantic comedy. There isn't really even any romance in it. And it's hell alot of fun.

I find the plot to be pretty original. The extremely clever dialogues with a very wicked sense of humor spoken by Emma Stone easily gives this film a 10/10. There isn't any teen movie that I can remember enjoying so much since Juno.

"Easy A" is engaging, smart and extremely funny with a very interesting plot. And with the amazing performance by Emma Stone, I don't see why anyone should give this a miss.

-----------------------------------

Requiem for a Dream (2000)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180093/

The hopes and dreams of four ambitious people are shattered when their drug addictions begin spiraling out of control.

"Requiem for a Dream" is perfect in every way. The camerawork, the lighting, the sound editing, the screenplay, the script, the cast and the legendary soundtrack.

Every aspect of this film works so well with each other that this is no longer called watching a film. It's experiencing it. The sound editing is so good that I'll recommend everyone to watch it with 5.1 surround. And also the soundtrack. "Requiem for a Dream" gave birth to one of the most recognizable piece of score in film history. "Lex Aeterna". You may not know the title, but I'm sure as hell you've heard of it. Many films and trailers has since used it but the younger generation probably doesn't know it originated from this film.

The casts are phenomenal. It's not easy to portray drug addicts with such realism. This film is so real that it's disturbing. The underlying theme is extremely powerful and will be deeply printed in your mind for a long time. The way it relates something extremely common in our society with heroin addicts and both having the same effect on their lives is a very important message.

Experience this and it'll stay with you for a long time to come.

-----------------------------------

Dark City (1998)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118929/

A man struggles with memories of his past, including a wife he cannot remember, in a nightmarish world with no sun and run by beings with telekinetic powers who seek the souls of humans.

"Dark City" is a Sci-Fi Classic. There are many popular Sci-Fi films in the 2000s that are extremely similar to "Dark City", but I will not name them for fear of giving away too much of the story. Although the concept of this film is not as complex as those we find in the 21st century, it's still very intriguing and original for its time.

One thing I really like about it is that even though it's a Sci-Fi film, there's no overwhelming futuristic technology. With the whole film setting in a 1940s city, "Dark City" is extremely original.

-----------------------------------

Gattaca (1997)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119177/

A genetically inferior man assumes the identity of a superior one in order to pursue his lifelong dream of space travel.

Another great Sci-Fi film of the 90s that didn't do well at the box office but gained fame over the years. "Gattaca" tackles something important, something that may soon be a reality in our lifetime, Genetic Engineering. It brings discrimination to a whole new level from racism.

"Gattaca" is extremely pleasant to watch thanks to its Noir style, it's also thought provoking about something that may soon be a reality and it throws in a few little unexpected plot twists that will bring a smile to your face and mumble "WTF".

"Gattaca" isn't just for Sci-Fi fans, I'll recommend it to anyone who enjoyed this list.

-----------------------------------

Trainspotting (1996)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117951/

Renton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends.

Most drug addicts films are extremely dark because they wanna portray the evil of drugs. But director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later) manages to send the message in a well balanced film without being overly depressed by adding dark humor to it.

The young Ewan McGregor is amazing in here and so are the rest of the cast who most of them went on to have a long career in acting.

"Trainspotting" was ranked number 10 on the British Film Institute's all time best British films in 1999 and was also named the Best British film of last 25 years in 2010 by The Observer, taking the number 1 spot.

Subtitles are highly recommended as the characters are all speaking with a Scottish accent at an incredibly high speed.

-----------------------------------

Boy A (2007)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1078188/

The story of a young ex-con Jack, newly released from serving a prison sentence for a murder he committed as a child.

Have you ever wondered what happens to those kids you read in the news that were sent to prison at an extremely young age? What happened to them? Where do they go when they were released?

"Boy A" explores this theme in depth and shows us something that many in our current society refuses to believe. That someone can change.

Do you believe it?

-----------------------------------

Mr. Nobody (2009)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0485947/

A tale that spans different time zones of the 20th and 21st centuries.

I was sent on a fantastic 138 minutes ride with Mr. Nobody. I'm not sure if it's by coincidence, but the film discusses many paradoxes and theories that I have been questioning all my life.

I was absorbed into the world of "Mr. Nobody" and wish I could see my own life as the title character did.

For some, the vast amount of information and theories presented in the film may be overwhelming, but for me, it's the main aspect of the film that caught my attention.

One recurring main theme in the film is the "Butterfly Effect" theory and Jaco Van Dormael presented it perfectly. He showed us the true meaning of the "Butterfly Effect" as opposed to the sinfully wrong interpretation by the 2004 film with the same title. The Butterfly Effect doesn't necessarily need any time travelling to occur.

It's really amazing how many new ideas and perspectives a single film can bring and this is highly recommended to anyone who likes to ponder about life. Or anyone who had a hard time making an important choice in life.

-----------------------------------

Die Welle (The Wave) (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1063669/

A high school teacher's unusual experiment to demonstrate to his students what life is like under a dictatorship spins horribly out of control when he forms a social unit with a life of its own.

Die Welle is based on a novel of the same name which in turn was inspired by a true, real life experiment conducted in a high school in 1967. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_Wave

I was extremely fascinated by the actual experiment when I first read about it 2 years ago and have been wanting to watch this film ever since it was announced. I managed to watch it recently and it was one hell of a film.

If you liked "The Experiment" and is extremely intrigued by human experiments, "Die Welle" is one film you wouldn't wanna miss.

-----------------------------------

Traffic (2000)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181865/

A conservative judge is appointed by the President to spearhead America's escalating war against drugs, only to discover that his teenage daughter is an addict.

It will be underrating "Traffic" if we choose to call it another drug film. Unlike many other drug related films in early 2000s, "Traffic" doesn't focus on the addicts, but on every aspect of the drug trade. And the most refreshing of all, it doesn't preach. Not a single bit.

It wants to portray the trade as realistic as possible, especially so with it's documentary feel camerawork, leaving the audience to absorb the film and think for themselves. There's no good vs evil nor is there the usual good triumphing over evil.

9/10.

-----------------------------------

Contact (1997)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118884/

Dr. Ellie Arroway, after years of searching, finds conclusive radio proof of intelligent aliens, who send plans for a mysterious machine.

Based on the novel by Carl Sagan, "Contact" is a film way ahead of its time. The only hint of it being a 1997 film are the computers shown in the film. Other than that, it's as modern as it could get even when you watch it in 2011. The visual effects are stunning and it looks better than some of the recent films more than a decade later.

And the visuals is just the tip of the iceberg. The story itself is intriguing making you look forward to how the film will end. Although the ending isn't as good as I expected it to be, the whole film itself is extremely satisfying.

Is "Contact" worth 150mins of your time? It is if you love Sci-Fi and theories about extraterrestrial life.

-----------------------------------

Transsiberian (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800241/

A Trans-Siberian train journey from China to Moscow becomes a thrilling chase of deception and murder when an American couple encounters a mysterious pair of fellow travelers.

"Transsiberian" was recommended to me by a few film enthusiasts over the past 2 years but I've never taken the time to watch it. Due to the recommendations, I've been expecting a good thriller and I am not disappointed.

"Transsiberian" is well directed and extremely suspenseful. It feels as though Alfred Hitchcock has come to life. It makes you feel uneasy about all the characters but you can never pinpoint the reasons behind it. As the film moves on and more is revealed about the characters, it gives you the thrills despite the lack of actions on the screen, something you don't find easily in films.

"Transsiberian" may start out a little slow, but if you can hold past the first 45 minutes, your patience will definitely pay off.

And remember, don't talk to strangers.

-----------------------------------

Phone Booth (2002)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0183649/

Stuart Shepard finds himself trapped in a phone booth, pinned down by an extortionist's sniper rifle.

There are many films that sets in one location but not many can deliver as much thrill as "Phone Booth".

I watched this with 5.1 surround, and although it seems unnecessary for a film with a guy on the phone, watching this loud and in surround is a must. Watch this with at least a pair of earphones if you do not have a decent sound system. The voice on the other side of the phone, that extremely calm voice with perfect diction and presented in super clarity sends chills down my spine every single time he spoke. Even though he sounded intelligent and calm, you can sense the sociopath in the voice without even seeing him.

The fast paced plot came to a climax that it deserves. The climax, together with its sound effects makes your heart stop for a few seconds, something your heart needs after pumping blood vigorously for the past hour.

Highly Recommended.

Middle Men (2009)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1251757/

Chronicles Jack Harris, one of the pioneers of internet commerce, as he wrestles with his morals and struggles not to drown in a sea of conmen, mobsters, drug addicts, and pornstars.

Everyone was going on about "The Social Network" a few months ago. But back in 2009, there's a film that many missed which is about something even better. Something that makes more money than Facebook. Something many guys take for granted.

Internet Pornography.

Based on the true story of Christopher Mallick, this comedy-drama is both intriguing and funny. Apart from some topless scene, it's not offensive and definitely not pornographic. But I will still say it's best that you watch alone. All in all, It's a decent film about the rise and fall of one man who managed to make millions off the internet with lots of humour thrown into it.

If you liked "The Social Network", I don't see why you should miss this.

-----------------------------------

Rounders (1998)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0128442/

A young man (Damon) is a reformed gambler who must return to playing big stakes poker to help a friend pay off loan sharks.

"Rounders" is a great film that didn't do well in the box office. But I believe that's because it came a decade early. I'm pretty sure if it's released now, it'll be a box office hit. Why? Because it's a film about Texas Hold'em poker. The game has obviously rised in extreme popularity in recent years.

"Rounders" has been called the best poker film of all time and it inspired many present top professional poker players to start poker. There are also sayings that this is the film that started the Poker Boom in the 21st Century. It's not hard to see why. The cast are incredible. Matt Damon, Edward Norton and John Malkovich. Edward Norton, as usual, didn't disappoint. He has been impressing everyone with his acting since "Primal Fear" and I can assure you he will do the same in here. And they managed to present the game's tension and excitement.

With it's sequel reportedly in development, I'll say watch it now before the sequel comes out in the big screen.

-----------------------------------

Hotel Rwanda (2004)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395169/

The true-life story of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda.

This is no doubt one of the most powerful film made in recent years. I've been asked a few times to add this to the list. But because I've watched this twice (Once in 2004 and once in 2006), I'm too lazy to watch a third time to add this in. As I stated, I always watch a film again to get a fresh memory before adding. But for this, I'll write by memory.

People have always been fascinated by genocides. But most can only recall the Holocaust and for Asians, East Timor. But there was a horrible genocide in Africa back in 1994 which the whole world ignored. Totally. Leaving the country to kill herself for months. Refusing to send any help. And "Hotel Rwanda" tells the true story of Paul Rusesabagina, a man who risked everything to save the victims.

It has been observed in recent years that it's because of this film that the Rwanda Genocide gain widespread realization. "Hotel Rwanda" is so powerful that it made me research deeply into the genocide as I couldn't believe the kind of horror human beings are capable of. If you have not watch this yet, I suggest this to be the next film in your list.

-----------------------------------

Perfect Blue (1997)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0156887/

A retired pop singer turned actress's sense of reality is shaken when she is stalked by an obsessed fan and seemingly a ghost of her past.

"Perfect Blue" deserves a place on this list. I believe many of the followers of this list loves a good mindfark. And "Perfect Blue" does just that.

Kon Satoshi is known for blurring the line between reality and fantasy in his films and "Perfect Blue" is his first work as a director. Even though it may seem too complicated at first, everything makes perfect sense upon rewatching.

It's important to note that "Perfect Blue" was originally intended to be a Live Action film, but because the 1995 Kobe Earthquake damaged the production studio, it was made into an animation instead.

Darren Aronofsky, director of "Requiem for a Dream" and "Black Swan", admitted the similarities between "Perfect Blue" and "Black Swan" but denied "Perfect Blue" as an influence for the film. I am skeptical about this since he is obviously a fan of "Perfect Blue". He purchased the rights to the whole film just for a single scene which he replicated in "Requiem for a Dream". And that is 10 years before "Black Swan" was released.

If you've watched "Black Swan", you will notice the stunning similiarities between these two films. The symbolism, the theme, the essence of the plot, even the underlying reason that broke the protagonist in both films.

If you love a good mindfark, liked "Black Swan" and a twist ending, "Perfect Blue" will be the perfect film for you.

Neds (2010)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1560970/

Peter Mullan's third feature as a writer and director, after Orphans and The Magdalene Sisters, returns him to the 1970s Glasgow of his youth...

Ned is a term used in Scotland to describe hooligans. It is the equivalent of our local term "Ah Beng". There is a backronym that says Ned stands for "Non-Educated Delinquent". With this explanation alone, you should have a vague idea of what this film is about.

This film is about a promising teenager who topped his class every year. But in the short span of one summer holiday, he became a Ned and got lost in his new found identity.

"Neds" hits close to home. Especially with all these youth violence going around in Singapore recently. It is so powerful a film that I think it should be screened locally. The script is so well crafted that it reflects what we feel about youths. The film brings us through the change of the young man in extreme details. Even so, by the end of the film, you can't seem to remember what changed him to this monster. I believe this is how most parents feel.

With all these in depth feelings about the film aside, From Hong Kong's "Young & Dangerous" to Japan's "CROWS" to Britain's "Football Hooligans", I'm sure most male would love to watch a film about gangs slashing the hell out of each other.

-----------------------------------

Confessions (2010)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1590089/

A psychological thriller of a grieving mother turned cold-blooded avenger with a twisty master plan to pay back those who were responsible for her daughter's death.

There are a couple of people in this thread who kept bugging me to add this to the list. I wanted to watch it for months and finally found the time today.

I went into this film without absolutely no idea what the plot is about or what to expect. I didn't even know the genre. And I'm glad I did that because the film blew me away. Because of this, I think it's best that you not know anything about the plot, so I will not be discussing revealing about it.

Even though "Confessions" was headlined by Matsu Takako, the people who really shines in this film are the young actors and actresses who did an amazing job. I can imagine how hard it is for them to become so involved in a script like this and presenting it the way they did. That being said, the next person that deserves an applaud is "Confessions" director, Tetsuya Nakashima.

It's amazing how he managed to shoot a film that presents various film techniques artistically and yet allows mainstream audience to be fully engrossed in the intense plot. There are many past films that tried this formula and failed miserably but Tetsuya Nakashima did it perfectly.

As stated earlier, "Confessions" has an amazing plot and most people will start sniffing for a remake by Hollywood. But I'm not entirely sure if this film will work outside Japan. As a Japanophile myself, I understand why this film is worked so well in Japan and I didn't find the plot as disturbing as many others will. Because these things do happen in Japan, for real and on a regular basis. Even if Hollywood did go for a remake, I'm pretty sure it'll suck. The plot just doesn't fit into the American's culture.

Last but not least, "Confessions" has replaced "Memento" as one of my favourite films of all time. I'm looking forward to watching it again in the future.

"Confessions" is a MUST-WATCH.

Brotherhood (2010)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1273241/

Adam Buckley finds himself in the middle of a convenience store robbery during his last night as a pledge for a college fraternity...

We've all heard of the fraternity culture in the US, but not many knows the extreme of it.

I enjoyed the film. Even though it's an independent film, the casts and acting were brilliant with a script that is both engaging and exciting. I can literally feel my heart pumping in the final 20 minutes of the film and my heart stopped for half a second when a twist was revealed.

With its short length at around 78mins, "Brotherhood" is worth a shot.

-----------------------------------

Source Code (2011)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0945513/

An action thriller centered on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train.

I have no idea what to write about this film but I just want it to be on this list. I want you to watch it.

Everything about it just seems right. It is a fantastic piece of writing. It's a piece of Sci Fi that works. It has its twist and mind boggling stuffs but not so heavy that it gives you a headache. It allows you to understand the story and facts as you watch it without digging into your brain or pausing to think about what just happened. And yet, it still gives you that feeling of fascination like when you first watched Vanilla Sky.

Just think about "Vanilla Sky", "Deja Vu", "Minority Report" and "Donnie Darko".

"Source Code" is "Groundhog Day" on crack.

-----------------------------------

Limitless (2011)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1219289/

A writer discovers a top-secret drug which bestows him with super human abilities.

I'm not sure how popular this film is, but I'm gonna add it in anyway because I love it.

Just read the synopsis, how interesting is that? Trust me, whatever you are expecting isn't even half as close. "Limitless" is fantastic. It is fun, exciting and will make you dream about it for hours after the film end. You will know what I mean after watching.

I like the techniques used in this film. Noticeably, the change in the film's colour saturation according to the protagonist's mental state that allows the audience to easily keep track of what's happening.

The film is presented in a style similar to Guy Ritchie's film whom I am a fan of. If you are not familiar with Guy Ritchie, another good example will be "Fight Club". It's hard not to like this type of presentation. They make the film fun and easy to follow.

Now, excuse me while I look for my NZT.

-----------------------------------

Brothers (2009)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765010/

A young man comforts his older brother's wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan.

Not a huge drama fan myself, "Brothers" is one of those films that has been lying around waiting for me to watch it. A remake of a 2004 danish film, "Brothers" is a powerful film that sends so many different important messages across.

Many people would have gone into this film expecting Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal to carry the film, even though they did a fantastic job, the star that truly shines, surprisingly, is Tobey Maguire.

The film wouldn't have worked as well without Tobey's amazing performance in the climax scene. If anyone ever tells you that Tobey Maguire can't act, throw this film into his face.

Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel (2009)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910554/

While drinking at their local pub, three social outcasts attempt to navigate a time-travel conundrum.

If you've followed the list this far, it's obvious that most of us love mind boggling films. So what's better than a time travel film? This is why I jumped right onto this film the moment I saw the title.

This is a comedy film. Think "Shaun of the Dead" but with time travelling as the theme.

The script is well written and I love the editing. The most important thing about a time travel story is how every event intertwines and "FAQ about Time Travel" did it perfectly. It's not over complicated and gives the audience a sense of satisfaction, leaving you go "ohhhhhh".

The ending leaves much to be desired but the ride there is incredible. The pace is perfect and the short length of the film will make you scream for more.

-----------------------------------

Chronicle (2012)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706593/

Three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery. Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.

You've probably watched the trailer back in 2011 when it went viral and got pretty excited about it. But you have also likely missed it when it was released in Singapore. Either you forget about it or your friends told you not to.

If there's anyone who told you this is "Cloverfield", don't listen to them. Now don't get me wrong, I love "Cloverfield" and "Chronicle" is indeed filmed in Cinema verite style, but you will not get any motion sickness out of it. The director used the plot device to enable lots of Steadicam shots without ruining the "Found Footage" element to the film. And it helps that cameras are everywhere in the 21st century so they are not restricted to just one camera.

The story is simple yet intriguing. Sure, it's not complicated or mindfarking like many of my recommendations, but because of the way it's filmed, it draws you right into the plot. Especially with superheroes dominating the cinema, "Chronicle" came at the right time.

The script is incredibly smart and the flow of the film is never stale. If you think watching the origins of your favourite superheroes is fascinating, wait till you see "Chronicle". It involves drama, action, sci-fi, high school life and everyone's favourite, superpowers.

-----------------------------------

We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1242460/

Kevin's mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined.

We've seen lots of film about evil, killers, psychopaths and the like. But "Kevin" gives us a different perspective. The perspective of a mother.

Adapted from a 2003 novel, "We Need to Talk About Kevin" is a psychological puzzle that makes you scream for more information as you watch the film even though at the back of your head, you sense what is about to happen.

"Kevin" is a flawless film. From the script, to the casting and the acting. I'm still amazed at the acting and casts of 3 different young actors for the role of Kevin at different age. And there's Tilda Swinton, whose performance blew me away right from the beginning.

It's hard for me to write my proper views of the film without giving too much away.

This is a different kind of mindfark that everyone loves. This is sinister.

-----------------------------------

This is England (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480025/

A story about a troubled boy growing up in England, set in 1983. He comes across a few skinheads on his way home from school, after a fight. They become his new best friends even like family. Based on experiences of director Shane Meadows.

When we talk about skinheads, we think about neo-nazis, racism, violence and of course, "American History X".

I'm not saying these portrayals are wrong, but these are the modern skinheads. Skinheads didn't originated as neo-nazis. They were a working class subculture in England. "This is England" shows the beginning of the division between skinheads. The political racists and the original subculture.

There are 2 actors who performed so well that them alone is good enough reason to watch. Thomas Turgoose and Stephen Graham. Especially Stephen Graham who blew me away with his performance as Combo. It's as intense as one can get. And with the fascinating plot, I don't see why anybody should give this a miss.

If you liked "American History X", this is a no brainer.

-----------------------------------

Monster (2003)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0340855/

Based on the life of Aileen Wuornos, a Daytona Beach prostitute who became a serial killer.

I can't believe it's almost 10 years since "Monster" was released. I still remember it like it was yesterday. The performance of Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci that blew everyone away.

This is not just a film about a serial killer. It's about the process, her needs and her rationale behind her decision to be a serial killer. The emotional ride "Monster" brings you is an incredible but you'll stare at the credit in the end, soak up the feelings and decide what is your view on Aileen Wuornos.

-----------------------------------

End of Watch (2012)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1855199/

Shot documentary-style, this film follows the daily grind of two young police officers in LA who are partners and friends, and what happens when they meet criminal forces greater than themselves.

"End of Watch" is one of those damn good movies that didn't really caught on in Singapore. Probably due to its release with other higher profile films like "Loopers", many gave it a miss. But anyone who watched it knew it is one of the best film in 2012.

Jake Gyllenhaal & Michael Pena's chemistry is flawless in this film. They were able to portray the friendship and bromance so well that it melts your heart. The script plays with your emotions, and it wouldn't be possible if not for the 2 actors.

This is probably the best police movie I've seen yet.

-----------------------------------

The Devil's Double (2011)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1270262/

A chilling vision of the House of Saddam Hussein comes to life through the eyes of the man who was forced to become the double of Hussein's sadistic son.

We've all heard of Saddam Hussein having a body double. We've all heard how much of a psychopath his son, Uday Hussein is. Now here's a movie about Uday and his body double, Latif.

I was attracted to this film the moment I learn of the plot. I wanted to know what goes on in the Hussein family. Why is Uday so sadistic? What kinda life does a body double lead? I got more than what I bargained for.

Dominic Cooper. He portrays both Uday and Latif. And some of you may not even notice it because he does such a great job that you seem to forget they are the same actor.

Even though the real life Latif's claim to be Uday's body double is disputed, "The Devil's Double" is not to be missed.

-----------------------------------

Cell 211 (2009)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1242422

The story of two men on different sides of a prison riot -- the inmate leading the rebellion and the young guard trapped in the revolt, who poses as a prisoner in a desperate attempt to survive the ordeal.

Prison films. Who doesn't like a prison film? And a prison riot film at that. Most of you would have already decided to watch this film even before you finish reading the synopsis.

"Cell 211" is a great film. It satisfies everything you ever hoped for in a prison film. I wouldn't want it to be in any other languages other than the Spanish it's filmed in. The emotions can never be expressed in English.

There will almost definitely be an English remake coming up and I'll highly recommend you catch this before the remake.

-----------------------------------

Sunshine (2007)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134

A team of astronauts are sent to re-ignite the dying sun 50 years into the future.

-----------------------------------

Hunger (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0986233

Irish republican Bobby Sands leads the inmates of a Northern Irish prison in a hunger strike.

-----------------------------------

Cube (1997)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123755

7 complete strangers of widely varying personality characteristics are involuntarily placed in an endless kafkaesque maze containing deadly traps.

-----------------------------------

Monsters (2010)

Monsters (2010) - IMDb

Six years after Earth has suffered an alien invasion a cynical journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through an infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.

I never knew an alien invasion film can be so beautiful yet intense at the same time.

My only regret is not watching this in the cinema. "Monsters" totally blew "District 9" out of the water.

The realization you gonna have during the credits. Oh my.

-----------------------------------

Side Effects (2013)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2053463

A young woman's world unravels when a drug prescribed by her psychiatrist has unexpected side effects.

-----------------------------------

Blindness (2008)

Blindness (2008) - IMDb

A city is ravaged by an epidemic of instant "white blindness". Those first afflicted are quarantined by the authorities in an abandoned mental hospital where the newly created "society of the blind" quickly breaks down.

An ingenious film. All it takes is have one of the 5 human senses removed and civilization will fall to it's bare minimum.

-----------------------------------

City of Ember (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0970411

For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights. But Ember's once powerful generator is failing ... and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker.

-----------------------------------

Trance (2013)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1924429/

An art auctioneer who has become mixed up with a group of criminals partners with a hypnotherapist in order to recover a lost painting.

It's a Danny Boyle film with hypnosis. This film belongs to this list.

-----------------------------------

New World (2013)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2625030

As Korea's biggest crime organization 'Goldmoon' expands its powers, Kang (Min-sik Choi), the head of police investigation planning department, orders the undercover cop Ja-Seoung (Lee Jeong-jae) to participate in project "New World", that will take down 'Goldmoon'. Ja-seong must choose either to follow Kang's orders as a cop or to keep his loyalty with Jeong Cheong (Jeong-min Hwang), the under boss of the 'Goldmoon' crime organization.

This is a film genre that I personally like to term "Gangster Epic". We've seen them all over the past decade and we love them all. Think "Infernal Affairs", "Election", "Protege" and the like.

Yes, the genre has been dominated by Hong Kong cinema. But "New World" shines the same with its Triad counterpart. The politics, the climatic scene, the twists and the brotherhood were all well styled.

At the end of the film, I have only one word, it was epic.

-----------------------------------

The Hunt (Jagten) (2012)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2106476/

A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.

-----------------------------------

A Bittersweet Life (2005)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0456912/

After doing a morally good thing, which conflicts with his boss's orders, Kim Sun-woo gets banished from the gang and escapes death narrowly, just so he could come back and avenge.

This is one of the most beautiful film I've seen from South Korean cinema since Oldboy. It's beautiful cinematography combined with the ultraviolent choreography is something I thought I'll never see again.

Lee Byung-hun's performance as the leading character completes the film. I can't think of anyone else taking on that role. And with the recent announcement of a Hollywood remake, I can't help but wonder who will be taking the challenge of portraying a character already perfected by Lee Byung-hun.

I'm pretty upset that "A Bittersweet Life" isn't getting as much exposure as "Oldboy". Both of them certainly belongs to the same category and both are perfect films IMO.

There's no reason to miss it.

-----------------------------------

Primer (2004)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/

Four friends/fledgling entrepreneurs, knowing that there's something bigger and more innovative than the different error-checking devices they've built, wrestle over their new invention.

So you think Memento is mindfarking. Or whatever film you think is mindblowing. But trust me, you haven't seen one until you've seen Primer.

My recommendation is to watch Primer with subtitles. The film is made to be confusing on purpose. As far as I know, no one will be able to understand it fully on their first watch and will usually rely on googling to resolve the story. No matter how hard you try to keep up, I'm pretty damn sure you'll be lost around 3/4 into the film. But trust me, it's all worth it.

There's no better closing to this than a picture.

SrIsLdy.jpg

-----------------------------------

Silenced/The Crucible/Dogani (2011)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2070649/

Gang In-ho, who is working to earn money for his daughter's surgery, is appointed to a school for hearing-impaired children in Gwangju. But what he discovers there is an ugly truth.

I'm so disturbed by this film that I don't even know where to start.

Based on a true story, this film was a hit in South Korea and was responsible for overturning the whole legal system in Korea.

What's more disturbing than the assaults shown explicitly on screen is the fact that the perpetrators got away with it with just a tiny slap on the wrist and the case went unrelatively unknown until "Silenced" was released in 2011.

After the film was released, there was a huge uproar in South Korea which made the Korean Parliament passed the "Dogani Law". Dogani being the korean name of the film.

Films based on true stories usually tells us about how justice has been served. This is the first time I've seen a film that did the justice itself.

-----------------------------------

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396171/

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born with a superior olfactory sense, creates the world's finest perfume. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he searches for the ultimate scent.

First and foremost, before watching the film, remember that "Perfume" is based on the fantasy novel of the same title by Patrick Suskind. Once you've grasped the genre is alternate historic fantasy film, be prepared for a film that is beautiful, fascinating, intriguing, engrossing and most of all, disturbing.

-----------------------------------

Snowpiercer (2013)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706620

Set in a future where a failed climate-change experiment kills all life on the planet except for a lucky few who boarded the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe, where a class system emerges.

Dystopian. One of my favourite genre in both cinematic and literature. Snowpiercer was way out of my radar because it's an english film produced and directed in South Korea based on a 1982 french graphic novel. Yup, way off my radar.

For dystopian and claustrophobic film lovers, this is a gem. Disregard some minor inaccuracies and you'll be in for a ride.

-----------------------------------

Coherence (2013)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2866360/

Strange things begin to happen when a group of friends gather for a dinner party on an evening when a comet is passing overhead.

If you've followed my list long enough, you'll know I choose not to comment on some movies and just encourage you to watch it. Coherence is one of them.

Watch it and have your mind blown. 10/10

-----------------------------------

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2866360/

Set during World War II, a story seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences.

I've been on a war film streak recently. Many of you have probably seen World War II from every angle you thought possible. From the Axis to Allies, from the Jews to the Japanese. But have you ever seen it through the eyes of a german child?

Honestly, I've procrastinated on this film for quite awhile. I never thought it'll make it onto this list and some of you probably think so too.

But this is probably one of the most thought provoking war film I've seen since Schindler's List

-----------------------------------

Predestination (2014)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2397535/

The life of a time-traveling Temporal Agent. On his final assignment, he must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.

I'll make this very clear. If you are a time travel junkie who have read a ton of time travel books and knows you've read the best time travel story of all time. Stop reading this review now.

If you don't. Well, I went into "Predestination" only knowing it's a time travel story. Halfway through the film, I realized it's based on my FAVOURITE time travel story of all time. I loved that story so much that I even posted it in EDMW a couple of years ago to great response.

"Predestination" is based on a famous short story called "All You Zombies". Don't read it. Don't even google it if you wanna enjoy this movie.

I read it about 8 years ago and I've always wondered if it will be made into a film since it's a short story. Whenever I watch a time travel film, I'll reference it again "All You Zombies". Ironically, I went into "Predestination" with absolutely no idea it's based on "All You Zombies". When the eventual scene came in and I realize what it is, I knew it'll be on this list. I know it'll be fantastic.

No matter who you are, I can guarantee you'll love this film like how many people loved the short story.

P.S. If you are a little confused or still interested in reading more. Head to this post.

-----------------------------------

Stonehearst Asylum (2014)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1772264/

A recent medical school grad who takes a position at a mental institution soon finds himself taken with one of his colleagues -- though he has no initial idea of a recent, horrifying staffing change.

Do not watch the trailer.

-----------------------------------

Ex Machina (2015)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470752/

A young programmer is selected to participate in a breakthrough experiment in artificial intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a breathtaking female A.I.

This film fits so well in this list that there's absolutely no way I wouldn't add it in. It's a combination of my favourite genres. Sci-Fi, Psychological, Thriller, Speculative and Horror. The plot is mindboggling and it encompasses one of my greatest fears.

-----------------------------------

Project Almanac (2015)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2436386/

A group of teens discover secret plans of a time machine, and construct one. However, things start to get out of control.

It's no secret now that I'm a huge fan of time travel fiction which led me to "Project Almanac".

"Project Almanac" is a found footage film. I know there are many people out there who hates this genre due to the camerawork but I think found footage are a hit or miss and in this case, it's a hit.

There are some usual time travelling ideas in here but also new interesting ones. It may not be the best time travelling film around but it did intrigue me. Well worth a try and a place on this list.

-----------------------------------

Enemy (2013)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2316411/

A man seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a movie.

I'm having trouble writing a review for this film. I just do not know where to start. I couldn't understand the film on my first watch. Many film critics have been saying this is a fantastic film and this is one of the first time that I couldn't understand why a film is highly recommended.

Then I realize, after reading the countless explanations on the film, that this is a masterpiece. This film is intentionally made to mess with your mind but it all made sense after you spend a couple of hours thinking about it.

To make it easy for you, watch the film before reading anything. Watch it all and if you are confused, which I'm sure you will be, read the following explanation which I found to be the most detailed.

http://shoton35.com/2014/06/05/enemy-in-depth-analysis/

But this is just one of the many explanations since the makers of the film never explained it and even got the cast to sign a confidentiality agreement to never discuss about a certain plot element to the media. You'll end up with different analysis and explanations. It's entirely up to you which one you think is the most accurate.

-----------------------------------

Time Lapse (2014)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2669336/

Three friends discover a mysterious machine that takes pictures 24hrs into the future and conspire to use it for personal gain, until disturbing and dangerous images begin to develop.

Technically, this isn't a time travel film but it shares similar sentiments. Instead of people travelling to the future, the plot device allows the characters to see what happens in one photo in 24 hours.

It's that simple and yet it creates so many anomalies which eventually brought the film to a splendid end.

-----------------------------------

Extracted (2012)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1757746/

A scientist who has invented a technique to watch people's memories finds himself in a dangerous situation after he's tasked with entering a heroin addict's mind to see whether the man committed murder.

There's no boring intro to this movie. No 20 minutes of scientists explaining the science or sob story. The movie jumps straight into the main plot with the science explained throughout the film. This is probably why I enjoyed this film so much and it feels so fast paced despite the lack of action scenes.

The main point and most fascinating thing about "Extracted" isn't the technology used to access the memory, it is the science of memories itself that will intrigue you. With a solid script that covers all types of memories you've heard of and piecing them together into a perfect story, "Extracted" will leave you satisfied when the credit rolls.

-----------------------------------

Legend (2015)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3569230/

The film tells the story of the identical twin gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray, two of the most notorious criminals in British history, and their organised crime empire in the East End of London during the 1960s.

There's a resurgence of the Kray brothers craze recently with a few films and documentary in just the past 2 years. But "Legend" seems to be the only one doing it right. If you don't know who the Krays are, you can check them out on wikipedia.

Tom Hardy, taking both roles of the identical twin did a fantastic job. You may think well, they are identical twins but the 2 brothers are far from identical. One being a genius and another is a mentally illed psychopath.

Even though it's a 130 minutes film, it is a blast to watch. Unlike many films about the American Mafia, "Legend" brings you the emotions of its characters. Bringing the rise and fall of the most famous pair of gangsters in London's history.

-----------------------------------

The Wailing (2016)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5215952/

A stranger arrives in a little village and soon after a mysterious sickness starts spreading. A policeman is drawn into the incident and is forced to solve the mystery in order to save his daughter.

2016 is when everyone talks about the Train to Busan. It's a great film that I really like. But The Wailing is the best Korean film of 2016. In fact, it may go down in history as one of the best horror film ever made like what the Ring did in 1998.

The Wailing has revived the true genre of horror. Horror before The Ring happened. A horror film with no jump scares. A horror film that scares you with its story without the need for cheap scares and loud noises.

A story so gripping and subtle that you'll find yourself trying to decipher it when the credit rolls. And once you figure it all out, or after you Google for an explanation, you'll realize what a genius the film is and how deeply it is tied to our Asian culture of superstition.

-----------------------------------

Don't Breathe (2016)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4160708/

Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems.

Genius. Just by reading the synopsis alone you'll realize instantly that the premise is genius. And the premise isn't the only thing unique. The whole film is filled with ingenious ideas which will take you by surprise. It's not just a home invasion film. It's THE home invasion film.

I believe my heart rate raced for an hour straight with no chance of rest in this extremely gripping film. No haunted house is as scary as one with this blind man.

It's recommended that you watch this in the dark with a pair of great headphones.

Never rob a blind man's house.

-----------------------------------

Get Out (2017)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5052448/

Chris and his girlfriend Rose go upstate to visit her parent's for the weekend. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

This film is taking the world by storm. Let's hope by adding it here, you'll watch it before everybody else.

-----------------------------------

Perfect Sense (2011)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1439572/

A chef and a scientist fall in love as an epidemic begins to rob people of their sensory perceptions.

"Perfect Sense" is a very different apocalyptic film. It truly explores what it is to be human,
to live a life. I can't think of any other way that can improve this film. It has the perfect cast, perfect cinematography and perfect direction. At the end of the film, I wondered, "How can an apocalyptic film be so terrifying yet beautiful?"

-----------------------------------

The Invisible Guest (2016)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4857264/

While the clock is ticking, with the aid of a witness preparation expert, a successful entrepreneur accused of murder has less than three hours to come up with an impregnable defence.

This is a gem on Netflix that has been on my to watch list for a long time after recommendation from a friend.

It fits perfectly into this list and with a rating of 8.1 on IMDB, I doubt you'll need any convincing from me.

Anyway, I'll try to watch those films you guys recommend. As I do not want the same thing to happen again, I will not reply to recommendations if I don't wanna add them as I don't want to offend anyone.

Do take note that films predating the 70s will not be added to the list. Reason being there are many great films before the 70s and it will flood the list. I don't even wanna start giving examples here. Another one is their availability and the interest general audiences shows in them.

Cheers.

Another recommendation, The Road. Also check out Viggo's other works imo he is very underrated

please update more frequent, i been watching movies from your tread. thanks

I will try to. I have more time now to rewatch films I think I wanna add. My policy is to rewatch so I can write a short views immediately.

And with those dicks over at the other side totally ruined my mood for updating it.

Uh. I hated The Road even though I'm a dystopian fanatic.

As for Viggo, the only film that he starred in and I really liked is "A History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises".

just a suggestion. perhaps, to lead sincerely interested people to watching the movies on your list, you could provide a link to purchase or rent the movie :D

at least they don't have to resort to other means to find it ;)
