I loan the map from Marbella (free). Just a microSD card and it works fine.
Also before you go you can install addresses of all places you want to visit.
I heard renting from them for a week --the cost can pay for a GPS over here.

hi, ya i also bought a marbella gps at the recent comex and got the australia/NZ map from them yest. Explored a bit last nite and seems quite easy to use. Should be sufficient for my GOR drive already. Thanks!

Yes GOR is definitely OK--that was where I also went with my Marbella + borrowed Aussie map in February.

of course use dedicated GPS software la ...i use for thousands of kilometers in perth and melbourne ...not a single cent charged ...the software is 1/10 the price of rental or purchase of a standalone gps unit

Then good. Last time I went, Androids not out in full force yet. Used my E51 with Nokia Maps then downloaded Australia map for only SGD14 to use. Paired with a Holux GPSr via Bluetooth.

just spend 30 bucks for a 1 month prepaid plan(500mb). or 2 bucks per day (unlimited i think) from optus

cos you'll only need the data plan for your phone only to GOR or when you're coming back from GOR.

This is another good option with an Oz data sim card. Wish it is that simple for the guys in the US thread in the main folder.

Using your itinerary as a reference, I traveled from Philip Island to Sorrente Ferry (3 hours). Bought seafood basket from Sorrente local fish and chips shop, then took ferry and eat lunch in car. The ferry (1 hr) is a nice break with cooling breeze and nice view.

After that slight difference from yours, instead of staying at Lorne, I drove to Apollo Bay (3 hrs) from Queenscliff ferry. Stayed one night and travel to Warrnambool (4 hours slow scenice ride with lots of stops). Stayed at Lady Bay Resort with a nice sea view of the great ocean :)

I must say that it is very tempting to speed when driving a car like camry as maintaining it at speed around 80 or 60 km/h is harder. I was advised against speeding there as there maybe speedcamera there. When driving long straight roads, it is very tempting to fall asleep there with the windows open and cold air rushing in. Better to take breaks when u feel tired when driving there.

Btw, I used my own garmin gps and downloaded the 2009 australia map from internet through *ahem* sources where a lot of ppl download things one ;)

My tentative plan now is to drive from Yarra Valley to Mornington Peninsula, get to Sorrento and board the car ferry to Queenscliff. Would like to check if the car ferry thingie is fuss free and that there is no need to pre-book at all, etc? Your timing includes stop, etc?

Ferry must go there then buy tickets. No need prebook. The cars will start queuing up the gantry and as you got through you pay for the car and each passenger. Then drive into the holding area in a pattern waiting for the ferry to arrive. Quite interesting if it is your first time taking car ferry.

Dear all,

What is the best way to get to the airport from Melbourne CBD for 2 persons? By taxi or Skybus? Does Skybus provide free shuttle from hotel to Southern Cross station? I understand that they do provide during arrival. What about departure?

Many thanks.

For departure, please call SkyBus to reserve pickup for hotel shuttle transfer. Maybe you can check with your hotel on how to contact SkyBus.

Hi all,

This is my F&E travel itinerary after doing some research. This thread certainly helps in some of the decision making.

26th Feb
Overnight flight to Melbourne

27th Feb
Arrive Melbourne airport at 7.50am
Collect Hertz rental car at 9am
Travel towards Halls Gap.
Stop at Ballarat to sightsee (May not spend too much time here)
Lunch either in Ararat or Halls Gaps
Check into Grampians Motel
Drop by Halls Gap visitor info centre
Drive around The Grampians, visit outlook places, Mt William, Mt Arapiles
Dinner in Halls Gap

28th Feb
Check out of motel
Grab breakfast
Visit places in The Grampians we left out the previous day
Travel towards Portcampbell
Drop Warrnambool visitor info centre on places we can visit in Warrnambool
Lunch in Warrnambool
Travel towards Portcampell
Check into Portside Motel
Drop by PC visitor info centre
Dinner in PC

29th Feb
Quick breakfast after checking out of motel
Visit 12 Apostle (Expect to spend main bulk to time here)
Travel towards Melbourne CBD to return car by 1800hrs
Check into Mercure Welcome Melbourne hotel
Dinner in Chinatown

1st March
Quick hotel breakfast
Report to Feb Square for Day Trip to Yarra Valley Wineries & Puffing Billy
Return by 1730hrs, shop around and dinner in Chinatown

2nd March
Check out of hotel
Breakfast at Queen Victoria Market, shop around QVM.
Visit places of interest, Old Melbourne Gaol, Sky Deck@Eureka Tower, river cruise, casino
Take Skybus back to Airport by 11.05pm.
Overnight flight to Singapore, reach SG at 5.40am

As I'll be travelling with my Dad, I hope to keep this trip relaxing and easy. So during the driving trip, probably there will be lots of rest at scenic areas. The downside is that we will probably miss some of other attractions but that is ok. The main highlights for us in this trip is The Grampians, 12 Apostles and Wine Tour. :D

Appreciate if you can give me some comments and also suggest any must-go places of interests.

Cheers mate.
