Dell Latitude 10 Review by Kyo86sg

With the increasing popularity and demand of the Windows 8 tablets (I am not referring to the lackluster RT version) which provides full windows experiences and support for legacy application , consumers now are offered tons of choices from vendors such as Acer, Samsung, Lenovo, HP, Dell and even Microsoft.

Being a consumer with lightweight media consumption (Facebook, browsing of the web, HD video playback, ebook) and office editing needs (PPT, word, excel). I valued and rated that portability and battery life are top of my checklist when I go shopping for my first tablet PC.

I figured that the Intel Atom offering would just be sufficient for my needs, since they offered the longest battery life and power efficiency of a total of TDP of 1.7W compared to the Intel mainstream offering of low powered processor such as the i5-3337U found in the ultrabooks which have a rated TDP of 17W.

Intel i5-3337U Specs

Intel Atom Z2760 Specs / Slides

ARK | Intel® Atom

The Atom processor which is known mainly as a netbook processor over the past 5 years have had many bad association with it. A fact which I would have to admit. Words like Sluggish, Unusable, slow, Not recommended and even Waste of money were a common thing to hear. The first few generation of Atom processor couldn’t even play back High bitrate 720p videos let alone 1080p videos. It fare so bad on the multimedia side, one couldn’t imagine running a game on the system. The only positive side is that it is good on simple word processing, Cheap and have created light weight computing devices.

So you might have wondered, why I even would think of picking up an Atom processor now?

clovertrail-1.jpg

Well, firstly the Clover trail atom aka the Z2760 is a SOC (System on chip) was built ground up specifically for the windows 8. By having Intel working hand in hand with Microsoft in the development right from the start, it has optimize the hardware level such as the Power VR 545 graphic engine in the atom processor to take advantage of windows 8 visuals department, which in turn offers a streamless and responsive interface user now experience. Long gone are those crappy boot time or laggy interface where an average Clover trail processor boots into the start screen under 30 second. Oh did I mention that it could now play 1080p video without shuttering and offloading the processing to the GPU? =)

Well enough of the info on the Atom processor and let’s dig into the Clover trail offering by the various vendors.

The Acer Iconia W510 is the of the cheapest and longest battery life available reaching 11Hr with Full screen brightness (with dock attached), However if lacks a full size USB slot on the tablet and features a micro SD card slot instead of a full size SD card slot. Its LCD wasn’t as bright as the competitor offering (292cd/m). For the full indepth review click on the link below:

Review Acer Iconia W510 Convertible - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

The Asus Vivotab features one of the brightest LCD at 394cd/m which is very viewable in outdoors, but shares the same flaws as the acer table on the Lack of Full size USB ports and micro SD card slots. But the battery life is a disappointing 3hr 47 with Full screen brightness. For the full indepth review click on the link below:

Review Asus VivoTab Smart ME400C Tablet - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

The Hp Envy X2 in tablet mode doesn’t even have any USB or SD card slot, it is very dependent on the dock to provide for it, Thus portability suffers for it. The LCD features a brightness of 334cd/m which is inbetween the vivotabe and iconia and its battery life of 7hrs 7mins under Full brightness (with dock attached) make it quite a road warrior in its class. For the full indepth review click on the link below:

Review HP Envy x2 11-g000eg Tablet - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

The Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 features 1 Full USB slots, 3G, SD card slots and remarkable score 8-10 hours in battery life, while the LCD brightness isn’t measured, it is deem viewable in an outdoor settings. For the full indepth review click on the link below

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 review

The Samsung Ativ Smart PC XE500T in its tablet mode, offers a full size USB port along side a micro sd and a micro hdmi slot and offers a 4G mobile broadband slot, which make its one of the better contender against the dell latitude. With a brightness level of 367cd/m and offering a 4hrs 30mins of run time under Full brightness. For the full indepth review click on the link below:

Dell Latitude 10, otherwise known as ST2. Compared to the other competitors specification, the latitude 10 Offers 1 Full size USB port, 1 Full size SD card slot, mini HDMI and 3G micro sim card slot. One of the major selling point of this tablet is the built quality using Gorilla glass, reinforced magnesium alloy frame and best of all a User replaceable battery.

Which means after 3years, I don’t have to chuck my Acer,Lenovo, samsung,Asus tablet in the bin due to battery degradation! I could simply purchase another battery under $80 and it works again!

Replaceable battery

The dell latitude 10 brightness is rated 450cd/m and battery life for the 2 cell is around 8hours and 4 cell is close to 17hrs!

An In-depth Review can be found here
Dell Latitude 10 Review & Rating | PCMag.com

Based configuration starts at $803 and can be further customize such as upgrading to Window 8 Pro for an additional $64.20 or a higher capacity 4 cell battery for $35.31 it is slightly cheaper than the other competitor offering. I built mine online and within a week it was send to my place!

Looking forward to your review although I'm actually waiting for the upcoming tablets based on the Intel's "Bay Trail" platform.

Yup Bay Trail should be one of the best Atom offering! Quad core processor.. Just wondering what will the TDP be? <5W ;)

Perhaps you should take into account the battery life without the dock?

The Latitude 10 is much heavier than the Vivotab without the dock and is even more so with the dock attached. Thus while it scores in battery life with the dock, the portability takes a severe hit when you bring it out considering the weight.

I will agree that the latitude is heavier but the dock does not have any battery inside. Battery life is based on the removable 2cell of 4cell you decide when purchasing the system.

My apologies, I had assumed the dock supply power as well.

I'm curious that you stated that the Asus ME400C has a disappointing battery life of 3hr 47mins. However, in one of the review links you posted, the following picture was shown;
376026-dell-latitude-10.jpg

From this it seems like both are pretty even, considering the ME400C is lighter than the L10, whereas the L10 has the flexibility to go further by changing into a 4 cell battery, but at the expense of pushing the weight up to over 800 grams.

Hi, the battery runtime for the ME 400C is taken from the notebookcheck review as link above. 50% brightness close to 8hrs and 100% brightness is 3hr 47min. Hope it clear some doubt. I figured that since the L10 has a Full size USB port and replaceable battery and with 3G option. It is a winner in this category of Atom tablets. =:p

Did notebookcheck do a review on the L10? Couldn't find one to compare with.

Actually there are some things in which the L10 is a clear winner; full sized USB and physical hardware button for the "Win" key. If you've used the ME400C and Surface, you'd probably discovered that the soft "Win" key is pretty rage inducing at times. (Although you can fix it with a reg tweak)

Just to check. This tablet doesn't come with 3G for Singapore version right? Do we have an option to add in future?

There is a version with 3G (WWAN term used by Dell). It uses micro SIM.

It seems that the Essential Edition is available in Dell Singapore website now. It is slightly cheaper, but the battery is non-removable, and also no WACOM touch screen.

Latitude 10 User who are looking for a good looking Sleeve can look towards the Targus Twill Sleeve for the 11" Macbook Air. Fits fine with the L10 with extended battery (4 cell)

You can get it at the targus IT show booth for $3X instead of $49.

Does USB powered HDD and Optical devices work of the USB port?

I've read that it doesn't work on some of the Atom tablets like ThinkPad2 and Asus ME400.

The latitude 10 has a FULL power USB port unlike the ThinkPad 2. :o
