Hi,

I bought this model at the IT show, quite a good deal. The specs seemed quite reasonable, had 8GB RAM, dedicated video, numerous ports including LAN, VGA, USB3 and HDMI. Much to my surprise, it was incredibly slow, with CPU utilization constantly at 80% or higher. Dragging windows or copying files unresponsive. The AMD A8 specs were roughly equivalent to the I5.

I tried BIOS update, reinstall and called Acer support. They were quite responsive.

I was able to return it for refund to Harvey Norman, to my surprise.

It seems there is some issues with this model, since only on the market for a few months.

Had 8.1 installed and the written docs were for 8.1.

I am thinking of getting Asus x302 or Acer S7 at the next show.

amd a8s are worse than intel i5 duo core ultra low voltage processors for cpu power.
Graphics wise they are better.
u cant compare number of cores and ghz with amd and intel.
AMD is incredibly inefficient compared to intel.

Hi David,

Do not be mislead by sales people that AMD can trash
Intel which is not truth.
I brought Asus X550DP which is based on AMD A10,
on benchmark it's slow but to me it's very fast.
As you got to know how to optimized it's performance
by reformatting and load the required drivers in order
for it to perform well.
The main issue with my laptop is the drivers,
at this point the drivers are still not matured yet for Windows 8.1.

so can AMD thrash Intel or not? cos u say cannot then next sentence u say AMD very fast.

from my experience, AMD is just too slow. maybe their graphics are ok but cpu processor is just bad.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I heard from one of the sales people at Challenger that this model was pulled from the market recently. Perhaps there are BIOS issues that need to be addressed. I had checked that the drivers were the most recent. The performance is unreasonable, moving a window took 3+ seconds while copying files.

I am considering both the Asus x302 and the Acer S7 with I7 & SSD. If anyone has any experience with these models , your input is appreciated.

What I am looking for is the following features.

Reasonable battery life > 6 hours
lightweight < 1.8 KG
8GB of RAM or more
PORTS : Ethernet, HDMI, VGA, USB 3.
Touchscreen

SSD (preferred but not required)

Thanks.

Hi,

I will be using my laptop for training purposes. I might run VM workstation or Client Hyper-v on it, so thought the faster I7 would be useful, although I guess an I5 will suffice.

Want the ports though
Network - Copy files, otherwise must copy to USB HD and Copy from it
Video Connect to external monitor, although now have seen some USB 3 VGA and network adapters
HDMI
Good battery life
USB 3.0 ports

ULV i7 and i5 doesn't differ much. If you want power, get a quad core i7 4700mq/hq or above.

Best is to avoid amd processors but for their graphic cards you don't have to worry much.

Yes, After my last experience with the AMD A8, I will avoid. Itr may hvae just been a driver problem, but dont want to t repeat the experience.

If I5, higher than Intel® Core i5-4400 , since 4400 doesnt support EPT. Hate to buy a new notebook without that possibility.

On first bootup, it'll be slow due to updates etc... Next need to uninstall the crap that comes with new laptops, by using decrapifier

Am considering a few different models presently. Samsung NP740U3E. Has decent features, not too heavy although the I5 is 3rd generation 337u. simmlim Dealer offering demo set with 8GB for 1400. The Asus x-302 or Acer s7-392 quite nice but quite a bit more.

Couldnt resist, Bought the Lenovo Yoga 13. I5-337, 128GB SSD, 8GB Ram, interesting dual-hinge. 2 year warranty 1299.00

You were all correct about the SSD, it rocks!

Installs really fast.

I wanted the Asus ux-302, but 600 more.
