I am considering changing my aging PC to a laptop.

My aging PC has many bays and several TB drives. I store all my documents on the 2TB drive.

Since my laptop wont have that kind of storage, will be a smaller capacity, will move the storage externally.

My choices are :

1) external USB3 storage cabinet
2) LAN Storage - San or NAS I guess?

Any ideas about brands and cost?

If NAS, will it be too slow accessing from my laptop?

I have a Buffalo linkstation but is way too slow.

Hoping for a 4 bay alternative, since this Buffalo is 4 bay already.

3 things to consider:
1. Budget
2. Capacity
3. Expected speed range?

i think you meant, a NAS.

Try brands like Synology / Asustor. The speed will blow your LinkStation away.
btw, only wireless could blow you away.

Rarely people will buy SAN for homes.

Is your laptop the only machine to access the storage and you only need to access the data at one location? Then a DAS is your solution as that will give you the fastest speed.

Else you will have to consider a NAS which give you a centralize storage where you can access it anywhere but will be slower than a DAS

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. My Buffalo Linkstation Quad has Gb on it, but when I copy files form my PC using GB Wired Ethernet, it is incredibly slow.

I thought that if I could copy it using USB 3/Esata would be much faster.

What is incredibly slow? Maybe you can tell us the average speed in MB/s....

Are you using a GB switch between your PC and linkstation? Did you enable Jumbo frames?

My synology nas can hit 100MB/s.

A dlink dns-320 comes with a 1GB port but it does not returns 100MB/s transfer rate.

When purchasing a NAS, the port used is not everything. You will have to consider the memory, cpu and etc.

Synology page comes with speed test reviews for it products you can choose a NAS based on it if transfer speed is what you are looking for.
