A brief walk further up ahead brought us to the Jalan Berseh Food Centre, which was a little quiet for an early Saturday afternoon as not many stalls were open for business. Walking around the two storey hawker centre, we came across this stall called Lao Liang Pig Trotter Jelly & Shark Meat. As I have never eaten Pig Trotter Jelly (猪脚冻) before, we decided to gave this stall a try.

Lao Liang Pig Trotter Jelly & Shark Meat
166 Jalan Besar
#02-37, Jalan Berseh Food Centre
Opening Hours: 11am to 3pm, closed on Mondays

The lady boss served us the Pig Trotter Jelly & Shark Meat and proceeded to explain how they were made, of course not in details since they rather let the recipes go “extinct” than to sell it.

0018-LaoLiang.jpg

Pig Trotter Jelly was made from pork trotters which are stewed for many hours to turn the collagen into gelatin. This was then left to set and chill in the fridge for up to a day without the use of additives. And the result was chilled pork trotter frozen in a jelly-like gelatin much like agar agar. This is best eaten with the accompanying spicy sour homemade chilli sauce.

Plain boiled Shark Meat was a little springy (or Q) to the bite. Eaten by itself, there wasn't much of a taste. The flavours only hit you when you dip it into the provided plum based chilli sauce that was liberally sprinkled with white sesame seeds. One of the main ingredient in the homemade sauce was preserved plum and they have to be aged for 2 to 3 years before it can be turned in plum sauce.

I am not sure which stall Jeremy bought the Crocodile Soup from. I can't remembered if I had eaten crocodile soup before but this herbal based soup wasn't too bad and the meat tasted a little like chicken actually.

PS: After searching the internet for the likely stall, the crocodile soup should be from this unit - Fu He Turtle Soup (Stall #02-40), just opposite the Lao Liang Pig Trotter Jelly & Shark Meat stall.

Though the rain had long ceased, the weather was still very humid and we were just longing for a nice cool place to rest and sip the drinks. Luckily to reach The Tiramisu Hero Cafe, it doesn't entailed a long walk under the hot sun like our Malacca trip which is coming up soon if I can find the time to edit and post the pictures up. :D

The Tiramisu Hero Cafe
121 Tyrwhitt Road
Singapore 207548

Opening Hours:
Sun-Tue: 11am - 10pm
(Closed on Wed)

As you can see, the indoor Seating Area was pretty small and packed with diners while the alfresco seating area was totally empty.

Ordering cum Payment Counter - Order here and make the payment at the same time since there was only one staff manning the counter.

0025-TheTiramisuHero.jpg

The Tiramisu Hero Cafe's Menu - Though there were main courses and starters, we went for their drinks and desserts since none of us were hungry after the various stops beforehand.

0026-TheTiramisuHero.jpg

Since the cafe was named The Tiramisu Hero, how can there be no Tiramisu? Inside the fridge were three shelves of different flavours of the dessert for selection.

0027-TheTiramisuHero.jpg

Seating Area - A table made of recycled woods paired with an assortments of chair and stool.

Sir Antonio drawings on the walls and ceiling. And just who is Sir Antonio, you might ask. Sir Antonio was a Roman street cat by birth. Growing up right behind the café that brews the best coffee in the world.

0029-TheTiramisuHero.jpg

Sir Antonio hangs on the wall on peaceful days. But did you know that underneath the head there is an opening where you can slot your head into and turn yourself into a "cat"? :D

0030-TheTiramisuHero.jpg

The moment you stepped into the cafe, just near the entrance on both sides of the wall were Souvenirs and Costume Jewelleries you can purchase.

This is the original flavour Mommahero Tiramisu (S$7.50) which also comes in Strawberry, Lemon, Lemon Lavender, Cinnamon, Chocolate, Milo, Horlicks and Ovaltine flavours. Only the original one came with alcohol as one of the ingredient.

0033-TheTiramisuHero.jpg

0034-TheTiramisuHero.jpg

We shared this Finn Muddy Mud Pie (S$8.90) which boasted a thick slab chocolate ice cream on a bed of oreo cookies.

Kahlan had the Darjeeling Tea which came in a set of colourful tea cup and saucer.

0037-TheTiramisuHero.jpg

Jeremy opted for the Ginger Beer which he commented was pretty good.

0038-TheTiramisuHero.jpg

Bills - Prices were a little on the high side though. A nice place to chill out if you happened to be staying nearby.

Just as we cooled down, it's time to hit the road again as we walked pass the Jalan Besar Heritage Trail signboard. The trail features four new heritage sites in the district, which include Syed Alwi road, the former Victoria school (now the People's Association headquarters) and the Holy Trinity Church. Jalan Besar was one of the first heritage trails launched by the NHB in 2006.

As we explored Jalan Besar more, we came to this Windowsill In the Woods cafe nested among the row of shophouses. Many were just here for their selections of sweet yummy pie when we visited it on warm Saturday afternoon.

Windowsill In the Woods
78 Horne Road
Singapore 209078
Tel: 9004 7827

Opening hours
Tue-Thur: 11am – 9.30pm
Friday: 11am – 10.30pm
Saturday: 10am – 10.30pm
Sunday: 10am – 9.30pm
Closed on Mondays

The cafe with it's Pop Up Storybook Setting sure pack in a lot of diners even though it's located in a out of the way place. We managed to grab ourselves a table right under the air condition. The two tables at the "balcony" area next to the window would have been nicer but we weren't able to fit in since there were four of us.

Everyone was feeling the heat after walking out in the sun, so the Assorted Flavoured Tea Leaves weren't on our mind as we stuck to ice water.

Assorted Pies - All the sweet kind since they don't do savoury pies nor do they do cake and definitely not cupcakes according to their website. We happened to chance upon Kahlan's friend who bought a whole pie made up of all the flavours they have on that day.

0045-WindowsillPies.jpg

0046-WindowsillPies.jpg

Morello Cherry Pie (left) was filled with sticky morello cherries and covered with an intricate weave of sugared shortcrust while the Camp Symmetry Pie was a limited item made to commensurate the Camp Symmetry indie music festival last November.

Funny Apple Pie has succulent sautéed apples baked in a fragrant almond custard and topped with enchanting rum-soaked raisins.

0049-WindowsillPies.jpg

Banana Almond Brittle Pie - Sweet banana mousse, salty caramel and crunchy nuts come together in an explosion of flavour!

0050-WindowsillPies.jpg

Pecan Pie - Loads of pecan nuts on a paste made of brown sugar.

0051-WindowsillPies.jpg

Coconut Lime Vodka Pie - Filled with zesty lime curd, intoxicating cubes of vodka jelly and topped with a swirl of coconut cream. Put it all together and it’s like a pina colada without the pesky pineapple!

Just from the look at the Pecan Pie, you can already tell that it's going to be sweet since the main ingredient of the paste was brown sugar. We found it a tad sweet but overall still acceptable with the crunchy pecan nuts. The tartness Morello Cherry Pie harmonized wonderfully with the sweetness of the sugar coated crust to win this one the most votes of the two.

0053-WindowsillPies.jpg

0054-WindowsillPies.jpg

The Camp Symmetry Pie with its exquisite white chocolate pudding with raisins, cookie streusel and candied thyme plus a single mushroom on every slice. Hmmm..., I think Bunny ate that mushroom all by herself.

0055-WindowsillPies.jpg

Strawberry Lemon Pie - Tangy, and refreshing, this tart is perfect for a summer’s day, which is just about everyday in these parts. That was how the website described it. Not as sickening sweet as some of the other pies, the tangy fruity taste in perfect balance with the lightly sweet custard and the embedded pieces of strawberry.

Ordering cum Payment Counter - Although it was way passed lunch time at 2.10pm, the premise was still packed with diners. Even the warm alfresco dining area was filled with people having their meals. Those in the cool comfort of the air conditioning had their behinds glued to their seats so no hope of getting a table in there. In the end we had to settle for a table outdoor.

Chye Seng Huat Hardware's Menu - After snacking on just desserts for the previous two stops, it's time we grabbed something more substantial. For drinks, everyone decided on the cold coffee on tap since it was after all a pretty hot afternoon even though it rained earlier on.

0065-ChyeSengHuatHardware.jpg

0066-ChyeSengHuatHardware.jpg

The Cold Brew Coffee came in dark tinted bottles that resembled those cold syrup medication from the olden days. Jeremy had sneaked in an extra order of the Maple Syrup Pecan Cookie which I found it tasty.

Cold Brew Coffee with syrup and creamer. Cold brew refers to the process of steeping coffee grounds in room temperature or cold water for an extended period. Cold brewed coffee naturally seems sweeter due to its lower acidity. Because the coffee beans in cold-press coffee never come into contact with heated water, the process of leaching flavor from the beans produces a different chemical profile from conventional brewing methods.

The Huat Breakfast V2.0 came served with scrambled egg, potato salad, tomato, croissant, two pork sausages and a thick slice of ham steak. All these for a grand price of S$17++. Not exactly pocket friendly but at least it was pretty good.

0071-ChyeSengHuatHardware.jpg

OMG! Truffle Popcorn was Oh My God too much sodium loaded. Although it smelled very good when the next table ordered it, my lips felt like two halves of a salted fish after eating it and my mouth very thirsty afterward. I won't order this if I happened to be there again.

Chye Seng Huat Hardware's Bill - Not really value for money but still they managed to attract a lot of customers so they must be doing something right. Jeremy had to leave then as he had another appointment so the three of us proceeded to our next target.

Further down the road we came to Lavendar Food Square which will soon make way later this year for the development of ARC 380, a 16-storey freehold development with more than 160 office and retail units. Straight away, we zoomed in to one of the more popular stall, the Albert Street Prawn Noodle and ordered a bowl of prawn noodle to share.

Albert Street Prawn Noodle
Lavendar Food Square
380 Jalan Besar,
#01-10
Opening Hours
10am – 3am
Closed on alternate Thursday

The Prawn Noodle (S$5) came with two large prawns sliced in halves. The chilli powder was not added in because Bunny could not take the spiciness. The broth was already bursting with the goodness of the prawns but with the some of the chilli powder added, you can immediately savour the extra kick it lend to the flavourful soup.

Next up, Whitley Road Fishball Noodles but we only ordered just the fishball soup minus the noodle plus a piece of their popular fishcake.

Fishball Soup - You get two different types of fishball here.

For the Fishcake, I wished that they had not fried the fishcake for that long as it causes the outer surface to form a tough skin. But once you get to the inside, it was moist and flavourful.

I could not find any information about this stall called Bugis Street as no one seems to mention them on the internet.

0081-BugisStreet.jpg

Bugis Street
Lavender Food Square
380 Jalan Besar
#01-21
Singapore 209000

Opening Hours
Daily: 10.30am - 3.30pm

We ordered the Char Kway Teow to try which was quite decent with the cockles and crispy bits of pork lard. Of course the wok hei and caramelized sweet sauce added points to the overall taste of this plate of kway teow.

0082-BugisStreet.jpg

Our last itinerary of the day was at Antoinette, just a 3 minute walk from Lavender MRT. I did never expected such a classy looking cafe to open along the row of old shophouses. While the main courses here are in the range of between S$20 to S$30, the desserts are all below the S$10 price point.

0083-Antoinette.jpg

Antoinette
30 Penhas Road (off Lavender Street)
Singapore 208188

Operating Hours
Monday to Thursday – 11am to 10pm
(Last order - 9.30pm)
Friday and Eve of Public Holidays – 11am to 11pm
(Last order - 10.30pm)
Saturday – 10am to 11pm
(Last order - 10.30pm)
Sunday and Public Holidays – 10am to 10pm
(Last order - 9.30pm)

Dining Area - Those expensive looking sofa seats and gold trimmings on the walls and ceiling might seem intimidating to a casual diner as the place look like a fine dining restaurant but at least the menu was not priced out of reach for most.

The Assorted Desserts behind the glass display look like yummy treats but we just wanted to chill out here though the air conditioning wasn't really cooling in the first place.

0085-Antoinette.jpg

0086-Antoinette.jpg

We did order one of their savory dish, the Brittany Crepe to munch on. The crepe came with a bowl of sauteed scallops, prawns, squids and mussels in white wine and cream sauce perfumed with herbs. A little creamy if eaten alone but with the crepe and salad, it eases out the jelak feeling.

0087-Antoinette.jpg

0088-Antoinette.jpg

I ended the meal with a pot of hot Orange Pekoe Tea; the tea leaves from the hills of Sri Lanka that leave a citrus aftertaste.

0089-Antoinette.jpg

At about 5pm, we were informed by the staff to settle the bill since they need to prepare the place for dinner. And this concluded our day tour of the Lavender and Jalan Berseh areas. Thanks Bunny for organising the the outing along with great company from Kahlan and Jeremy. Although the weather was rather unpredictable, I had enjoyed the tour and visited places which otherwise I would not have done so myself.

Yep, starting from 10am in the morning all the way to 5pm. We normally just order one portion and the 4 of us share the food. If one person alone, not possible to try so many food.
