Hi, just finished setup my AC87U. Previous router is N66U. However, I encountered one problem.

I have IP cameras and NAS at home.
1) However, when I am at home intranet(LAN), I am unable to go to my devices if I used WAN IP address + Port.
2) No Problem using LAN IP + Port (192.168.1.XXX:XXX) when at home intranet(LAN)
3) However, if I use my Starhub or M1 data plan, I have no problem accessing my ip cameras and NAS using WAN IP address + Port.

Can anyone advice me why I am unable to access my devices using WAN IP + Port when I am on LAN(intranet)? I have do not have this problem when I am on N66U. I have also opened the port for my devices in my router.

Which firmware are you using, and did you load in the configuration from the N66?

I recently upgraded my AC66 to AC87 on my ST plan (my VQ has been on AC87 for a while now). I have over 32 IP cameras on my ST connection which I manually recreated in the virtual server tab. The Asus firmware only allows 32 entries, while Merlin's firmware upped the support to 128 entries. For now, though, I am still on the Asus firmware. I did not encounter any instance where all the IP cameras are unaccessible (via the VQ connection or via 4G). At most, I have one or 2 cameras not being viewable, and I just rebooted them manually (I think it is more of the camera issue rather than the router issue).

Firmware Version:3.0.0.4.376_2769.
I have screenshot the configuration settings of my N66U. Did not load the configuration of N66.

I have 4 IP cameras. All are unviewable if I use VQ WAN IP address when I am on Intranet LAN network. I do not have this problem when I am on N66U previously.

Had bought a Christmas Present for my RT-AC87U.

Was indeed very surprise with the temperature outcome.:D
But still getting pausing/ buffering video streaming on 5Ghz...:(

It was this 48°C, 64°C and 85°C yesterday.

After buying a laptop cooler, now its 43°C, 55°C and 68°C.

Are your IP cameras on VQ WAN? From what I read, NAT loopback is broken in AC87. One user has to disable QoS before NAT loopback work. I can't remember if I turn on QoS. My IP cameras are on ST WAN, and they are accessible regardless of whether my laptop is on ST WAN or VQ WAN using the DNS URL.

You can try several 'tricks' that I used (which incidentally were also used by some users of SNB):

1. Put the AC87 on a laptop cooler.
2. Elevate the AC87. That way, there is air spaces on top and below the AC87.
3. Get a USB fan. I don't use the USB ports for the AC87 for any hard disks, so those USB ports are sure handy for attaching USB fans (as well as the laptop cooler).

Downside, if any, is the noise of the USB fans and laptop cooler. I have two AC87 side by side and without any forced convection, heat built-up in the corner where I place them can be quite bad. Now, I don't have to worry.

My IP cameras are on LAN IP Address(192.168.1.xx:xxxx). But on my smartphone/tablets, it is set on VQ WAN IP Address. That's why my smartphone/tablets unable to view the ip camera if connected to LAN network.

1) Connected home LAN network + Devices viewed using VQ WAN IP Address -> cannot view
2) Connected WAN network(mobile network) + Devices viewed using VQ WAN IP address -> can view

I did not enable QoS.

Your IP camera must be part of the LAN, but there must be a WAN connection to this LAN i.e. what is the WAN IP of the router where you IP cameras are connected to? Is the WAN of this LAN VQ? Your tablet/smartphone must be connected (via wifi) to a router. Is it the same router? If so, then your tablet/smartphone is in the same LAN as your IP camera. This is the NAT loopback problem. If your tablet/smartphone is using 3G/4G, then it is external to the LAN, and if you can view the camera, you are using the WAN access, and it means that your portforwarding rules are working fine.

Router reboot after remote WAN disconnect, possible IPS/AppEngine bug

Hi,
as my ISP force-disconnects me from WAN every 24hours I noticed a bug which triggers the router to reboot afterwords.
This issue was present on both latest beta FWs (both November and December one).

Hi,
as my ISP force-disconnects me from WAN every 24hours I noticed a bug which triggers the router to reboot afterwords.
This issue was present on both latest beta FWs (both November and December one).

Please find the attached log which shows the situation between WAN reconnections.

^^ Log in spoiler as it is pretty long with full stack traces.

Dear ankhazam,

Did you done hard reset?

Best regard,
JK

After installing RT-AC87U, everything works fine except my torrent app on my Synology NAS.

Is there any configuration that I need to set ?

I use uTorrent on my desktop and it works fine.

@ASUS@SG

Hi,
my update procedure is always as follows:
1) save current settings from the router
2) upgrade firmware
3) do a hard-reset using WPS button procedure
4) restore settings from the just saved file
5) browse through all tabs to see if everything is set properly.

As a side note:
The unwanted WPS at 5GHz bug is still present and needs being resolved.
To reproduce the bug:
1) make sure WPS is disabled in the web panel
2) reboot router
3) after reboot web panel states that WPS is off. On the contrary third party network analyzers (e.g. Wifi analyzer for Android or even pure Windows 8.1) show and confirm that 5GHz has still WPS operational.

Hi all,

I purchased the AC87U at the SITEX show and I have been happy with it so far.

At about the same time I also got a new Aftershock laptop running Windows 8.1.

I have two connections here...A - Singtel ADSL with a 2Wire router and B - Starhub Fiber and this is where the 87U lives.

When I connect to A, the connection is solid...no disconnects or I cannot recall having any.

When I connect to B, I would occasionally get a "Connection is limited" error. Sometimes it happens once every few days and sometimes it happens within minutes of disconnecting and reconnecting to the 87U.

I had originally thought that it was an issue with the 87U and then I read online many reports of this error so I switched to thinking it was a Windows 8.1 problem. But, now that I have been on A for at least 2 days with no issues and thinking that I never seem to have this problem on A I am back to wondering if there is some issue with the 87U?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

As an update, after spending more time on the Singtel router with no issues, I went over to a LAN connection to the AC87U. It's been solid for the past three-four days.

I have a friend who subscribe to viewquest fibre bb and managed to run the ONT given as router mode. meaning use all 4 ports on the ONT to act as an router. anyone heard of it? from what I know, I am on m1 fibre, that only one port of the huawei ONT is use for its ISP subscription. I am only able to use the 2nd port if I subscribe to another telco.

but my friend using viewquest manage to use all 4 ports on his ONT as though its a router.

THe is because the Zhone that VQ provides functions as a ONT cum router, whereas normal ISPs only give out ONTs without the router feature, thus only 1 port works.

Managed to solve the problem. Google and found someone also with the same problem. I will need to disable the firewall and enable back again. Then I can see my IP cameras using VQ WAN IP. However, when I reboot my AC87U, it is back to the previous situation. I will need to disable and enable the firewall again. :(
