No, I think some social science courses can be easily smoked through to get a second lower. Alot of social science/humanities examinations and essays sometimes never ask you for anything new. You dont need to criticise anything, just say 'this guy says this, therefore this' or 'this theory says that, therefore that'. No need for any deeper level thinking than what is taught in class, sometimes, it only goes further to apply theory x on situation y, but never far enough to critique theory x or situation y.

For those kind, you can just vomit back everything wholesale and still get through uni life.

If just want to grad..i think any non maths/science course can liao

Maybe I am thinking along the lines of getting more than 2:1 honours, I guess different universities have different standard of marking rubrics. :D

Hi everyoneee, literally just created an account to post here.

Anyway, I'm really curious about what kind of achievements people (who got in through DA/NAA) have. Last year when I went to the NUS open house, a student told me that he knew someone from Architecture who scored 3.0 GPA but got in through DA.

Anyone has any idea?

I got into NUS Biz through DA when I originally applied with a 5 semester GPA of 3.90 lol... My achievements include being a club president, winning an award (very minor one) at a stock investing competition and getting a bronze medal. Hope it helps.

You could have easily entered without even submitting ur cca record. I didn't submit mine when I applied

Apparently I was sent for the discretionary admission interviews lol... Guess my O levels hit my results really hard haha. L1R4 was 16 points without CCA.

Did you went for the interview and the 50 MCQs?

Your grades should have gotten in directly without DA.

Don't think it's discretionary admission then, just regular admission.

Unless they change it last year. 2012 and before had this ridiculous 50 MCQ component.

I did the 50 MCQ followed by the group role playing session and it was stated clearly it was discretionary admission when I went there.

Misinterpreted your post. Read it as you didn't do the mcqs.

If your Os was 12 points or lower, you could have skipped that entirely.

NUS biz is like 3.86 now... Maybe it'll hit 3.9 in a few years.

the new S/U policy for NUS to be honest is kind of unfair in that sense hahah.. assuming an average person taking 5 modules... naturally assimilating into uni life.. it is quite hard.. once again for an average person to get all 5 A's... so if one were to get 4 As and 1 B... that person can exclude the B from the computation of his CAP/GPA.. therefore resulting in a perfect CAP/GPA of 5/4.. the Year 1 Sem1/Sem2 S/U policy that NUS offers is really a 2nd chance to buck up. NTU's S/U policy is very different and almost useless for core modules.

so this is one factor for applicants to consider when applying for uni until NTU & SMU implements the same policy.

Was it hard to get in through DA?

I've had a couple of achievements and awards but my GPA is 3.1. I don't think I have a chance but my friends kept telling me to try.

Do you know anyone with such a low GPA who got the interview?

If I'm not wrong, not all modules can be SU'd over at NUS and if you were to get 4As and 1B, after SU'ing that B, your GPA isn't 5.00 because of the way the GPA is being computed. Correct me if I'm wrong. :spin:

No, NUS S/U policy does indeed allow many freshies to get GPA 5.0.

When it was first implemented, many wrote in to complain how it dilutes the value of a First Class. 'Real' FCH scorers are unhappy etc etc. Employers may perceive NUS FCH to be of lesser indication etc.

NUS did issue an explanation. Overall the factors balance out.

Anyway NTU honors rate is still higher than NUS due to their direct honors system.

Imo, NBS is the best among the big three uni. They also have the highest number of top A level students applying.

But each uni still has their pros and cons. NBS is the most established, largest alumni, best reputation locally (if you're going overseas then pick NUS) And can be completed in 3 years inclusive of a 6 mths internship meaning you only study for 2.5 yrs.

Plus consider the direct honors, MOOCs, S/U for gerpes, and a wide range of second specialisation. NBS also has the highest rate of 2nd upper honors among all local uni courses other than Nus law & Nus medicine.

Paywise, there was an article that showed nbs double degree students were earning the most of all everyone. But for single degree SMU wins.

One thing I noticed though is many NBS students are shy to say there are from NTU, preferring to directly say NBS as though as they ashamed of NTU

NUS wins by a long mile in terms of university branding.

ultimately if you dont care about ubdergrad experienced and only care about the paper, then nothing matters. All 3 uni give you a BBA which most employers view as equivalent.

But this is 3/4 very impt years of your life so choose wisely haha.

I would say it would be slightly easier if you have a strong foundation in finance especially for finance diploma students.

Sadly no, most of the people I spoke to over there had GPA of at least 3.7x and 3.8x..
