Hi,

If the name is "Peter Tan Ah Teck", what is the First Name and Last Name?

First Name: Peter Tan
Last Name: Ah Teck

Like this??
I mean... that's the only way to have it printed as "Peter Tan Ah Teck", right?

First Name is what people/friends usually address you. Last name is usually ur family name.
So example name is Lim Xiao Ming, then first name is Xiao Ming and Last name is Lim

Last name is surname/family name lo. Ang Mo likes to put the surname at the back hence it's also known as last name.

last name ish always ur family name, surname.
the sequence ish normally peter ah teck tan. the easy way to differentiate, ish to capitalise TAN.
the 1st name ish usually how u want ppl to address u .
if u want ppl to address u as ah teck instead, then change sequence to ah-teck peter TAN.

really ancient china ish same same, use 1st name. surname or family name ish usually hidden/not mentioned.
only after patriarchy system (follow the father's family name) ish established, then slowly family name ish put in front.
but it still took a long time. from 周公 (2nd king of zhou) to 秦王 (qin shihuang), all ish use 1st name, surname usually omitted.
even commoners like (女) , the surname ish last name. the eldest ( ) dotter of the family.
other examples would be , , all ish family name at the back.

There are many two-words Chinese names, whereby both words can be the surname. These names, not sure which one is the surname and which one is the name (and are these people referred to as one-word name when they are with their family?).

For example: Chen Bai.

Is Chen the surname or is Bai the surname?

Two-word Chinese names are really interesting.

Always think of First Name as Given Name.

First Name: Joe, Jin Ping, Shaquille
Last Name: Biden, Xi, O'Neal

Last name: Tan
First name: Ah Teck
First name: Peter
Have 2 first names, or use either one
Or use both:-
Peter, Ah Teck OR Ah Teck, Peter
