A recently published Nintendo patent shows how virtual reality could work on the company’s upcoming Switch console, despite Nintendo’s overall ambivalence toward VR. The patent, spotted by a NeoGAF member, describes a head-mounted display that would hold the Nintendo Switch tablet, reminiscent of Google’s Daydream headset or the Samsung Gear VR. The headset, Nintendo writes, could “enhance the sense of immersion” and could either include its own tracking sensors or use ones on the tablet itself. Wearers would play games by sliding off the Switch’s removable controllers, which could hypothetically also feature Wiimote-esque motion sensors.

lol they got a patent for that VR? It's basically the same as Google's VR, which has been around for some time. Google's cardboard VR sells for under usd 5, works on lowly mobile phones too (depends on the 'game' of cos). Unlike a mobile phone, I expect the switch to be much heavier (you can already see that it is very thick). Can you imagine wearing that whole brick of a thing in front of your eyes?

http://venturebeat.com/2016/12/14/nintendo-switch-specs-less-powerful-than-playstation-4/

Two sources (who asked to keep their names out of this story) confirmed to GamesBeat that the Switch uses Nvidia’s last-generation Maxwell graphics-processing architecture. Nvidia introduced its new Pascal architecture earlier this year, but that technology is not ready for the Tegra chip going into the Switch. The custom Maxwell Tegra (which uses a 20nm process as opposed to the more efficient 16nm process of the Pascal) in the machine is still powerful enough to play Nintendo-style games that rely on quality art over horsepower, but don’t expect Switch software to match the graphical fidelity of the highest-end PS4 games.

“I don’t see Nintendo’s strategy as a risk,” said Peddie. “Too many pundits and fan boys and investors make a serious mistake when they try to compare and contrast Nintendo with Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo has a niche in the affordable, accessible product, and performance is never a leading criteria for them. It is gameplay and immersion. They are never a technology pioneer. Trying to compare Nintendo to Sony is like comparing a Volkswagen to a Corvette. It’s a facetious and fallacious analogy and a discredit to fans who love Nintendo.”

Maxwell architecture... I wonder whether the power consumption would be manageable... And the battery they intend to use...

Contrary to the article where the writer sounds like he's fine with 540p that was used in PS Vita, I would say 720p is the minimal resolution standard they must achieve for a TV console - that's what they should be doing to attract not just loyal Nintendo fans but also to expose their product to the bigger mass of console gamers.

Most likely another Mario .

With Maxwell wonder how long this system can last as a console .

And really how many AAA games we will see release

Nintendo can't keep depending on their own first party games and Pokemon to sustain this console .

More like reality check. Best thing is zelda is not even launch title. Duno what they gonna launch with honestly, maybe some wii u titles like splatoon or yet another mario.
well.

that we shall see. 3+ weeks' time.

remember this is a do-or-die console from Nintendo. After the lesson from WiiU, this might be their last console if things doesn't pan out right.

from what i can tell..

it can be at most when dock.... more powerful than a ps3 or xbox 360..

if undock.. shld be slighly lesser to conserve battery life?
though having to create two "versions" of a game.. hmm....
might backfire on nintendo..

dont think will be close to ps4 or xbox one. unless the dock got some additional firepower..or nvidia got something up their sleeves
