I just received a OCBC Voyage mailer offering 3 voyage miles with every S$1 spent overseas from now to 31 Dec. This is the second time I have received this in a year.

I suspect this is a targeted offer, since I did put a overseas use notification for my upcoming trip later this month. For the earlier offer, it was sent to me in the June-July period, and the 3 miles offer period cover the period I traveled in July and had placed a overseas use notification in July as well.

Anyone with a Voyage received this offer this year? Did the offer period correspond closely with your overseas use notification period as well?

Tried to redeem business class ticket using voyage miles but it seems that voyage miles are worth as low as 0.005cts (half a cent). I was quoted VM63,600 + VM14100 for a ticket that cost SGD1369 + SGD70.13(tax & surcharges). I know I can opt to pay the tax & surcharges in cash and I will get krisflyer miles(1766) for the travel. Krisflyer redemption ticket requires 40,000 miles + SGD70.13.

$1369/63,600=0.0215cts vs Krisflyer redemption $1369/40,000=0.0342cts
$70.13/14,100=0.00497cts

Also found out that Voyage Exchange is handled by a 3rd party company. Maybe they did add in handling fee to the cost of the ticket??

Actually! its 38*2 way * 2 pax = 152k miles for the Singapore to LA since LA is on the west coast.

So your ticket dollar values 1667 or 2797 per ticket or 3334 SGD or 5594 SGD for two tickets

Value Per Mile
3334/160,000 =2.08 cents per mile
or
5594/160,000 = 3.49625 Cent per mile.

Given that they sell 15,000 miles for 488. or 3.2 Cents per mile.
or 150,000 miles for 3210 or 2.14 Cents per mile

Taking most optimistic valuation means you purchase miles (150k@ 3210) at 2.14 Cents per mile but uses it for a value of 3.49 cents per mile (Flexi Ticket). You saved 1.3cent per mile or 2170 dollars

Taking the most pessimistic valuation you purchase miles (15k @ 488) at 3.2 cents per mile but uses it for value of 2.08 Cents means you are in the lost of 1.1Cent or -1871

Taking the most realistic valuation you bought the cheapest miles required (150k @3210) at 2.14 Cents a mile but uses it for a value of 2.08 Cents ( Cheapest ticket to LA on sia) you are at a lost of 0.06 cents.

just my two cents!

Btw these pricing are the ones i pull from sq website on random dates, i am sure there more expensive tickets and cheaper ones at the same time.

You might (imo) have been better off buying a discounted SIA ticket during a sale and using for example a hsbc advance credit card with 2.5% rebate.

thanks for the calculation, but i blur sotong one la.

what i am saying is from spending, i had 160k voyager miles but i dont have 160k krisflyer miles.. so i just use my 160k voyager miles to book my trip.

if i used krisflyer saver to book my tickets.. my trip wont be able to claim mileage but for voyager i still get mileage.

makes sense?

What he's trying to say is that you could have gotten better value by buying a commercial ticket instead of using the Voyager miles.

I haven't set notification for overseas usage yet and they've sent me the targeted offer too. Feel like it's just peak travel periods (around Jun & Dec school holidays). Not sure how they identify people to target, though!

Please correct me if i am wrong.

So for this card, it is:

15,000 miles, $488 first year fee.

25,000 miles, $488 renewal.

Is this right? Ignoring other options presented.

I believe you still get 15,000 voyage miles for renewal.
