Why would any news that is not of public interest be printed on national newspaper in the 1st place? Something wrong with the chief Editor? If it’s on the newspaper, we can simply deems the news fake or real is of public interest, printed on national papers for the mass public. SMRT is a public transport, Stairtstimes is Sg Public newspaper. 我说你白,你就是白,超级白!

It is public interest because any change in leadership will affect their shares in a public listed exchange Enough public interests mah?

Whatever the argument, let's not forget that ultimately there is an "EXEMPTION CLAUSE" under pofma that those in power can apply at will. Yes, the poorly explained exemption clause that the MIW conveniently avoided answering in a clear manner when probed with questions about it.

It is incorrect to say that "If public interest is involved, any false statement of fact falls under POFMA".

POFMA only says that action will be taken if it is in the public interest to do so. This means that the government will only take action under POFMA if it is :

https://sso.agc.gov.sg/Bills-Supp/10...20190401#legis

(a) in the interest of the security of Singapore or any part of Singapore;

(b) to protect public health or public finances, or to secure public safety or public tranquility;

(c) in the interest of friendly relations of Singapore with other countries;

(d) to prevent any influence of the outcome of an election to the office of President, a general election of Members of Parliament, a by‑election of a Member of Parliament, or a referendum;

(e) to prevent incitement of feelings of enmity, hatred or ill‑will between different groups of persons; or

(f) to prevent a diminution of public confidence in the performance of any duty or function of, or in the exercise of any power by, the Government, an Organ of State, a statutory board, or a part of the Government, an Organ of State or a statutory board.

=======

This means that even if (1) it is a false statement of fact and (2) pubic interest is involved, no action will be taken by the government if it is not in the public interest to do so. "In the public interest" is defined as above.

Those two have the wrong focus. Remove the exemptions for the PR and publicity to apply pressure it becomes good exposure for them and gauges the real public interest if it's worth the effort.

From the threads and postings in EDMW, it is clear that many EDMW kum gong kias have little or no understanding of POFMA and ignorantly thought that action might be taken under POFMA against any false statement of fact regardless of whether private or public interest is involved.

In addition, some kum gong kias erroneously thought that when public interest is involved, action can/should be taken against a false statement of fact under POFMA.

The government can and will take action against a false statement of fact only if doing so is in the public interest (as defined above, regardless of whether the false statement of fact is of public interest).

In before PAP IBs reply

This is really a slap to the face of PM Lee. Who would believe PM Lee when he used the words "reliable" and "objective" to describe ST reporting?

What ST did by publishing unverified information, is the very definition of fake news.

PAP IBs favourite Donald Trump calls fake news the enemy of the people.

And the PAP government agrees, as seen from the way PAP lawmakers rushed to pass the fake news bill POFMA through Parliament into law.

If the editor of the ST dont step down or harakiri, then PM Lee should worry. ST will have no credibility left.

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapo...jective-pm-lee

Mr Lee, tracing the legacy of Singapore's most-read newspaper, said: "If you want to know what happened in Singapore or in the region around us, The Straits Times is an indispensable place to start.

"Because it has reported news reliably and objectively over the years, and it has done so through Singaporean eyes, helping Singaporeans make sense of the world and our place in it."

What you posted does not rebut my 2 previous postings.

What you posted has nothing contrary to my explanation of the law under POFMA.

As clearly explained in my 2 previous posts, the government can and is obliged to take action under POFMA only if these conditions are met :

(1) it is a false statement of fact
and
(2) it is "in the public interest" to take action.
and
(3) "in the public interest" is as defined in the law under POFMA.

p.s. As seen in this thread and many other threads in EDMW, many EDMW kum gong kias do not understand the POFMA and/or do not bother to read up the POFMA. So they erroneously think that the government can and is obliged to take action under POFMA simply because it is a false statement of fact (and something of public interest is involved).

Logical. Too bad it doesn’t work that way.
