Occupation confers a certain status.

Hawker is who earns 10k per month may not be low SES, but low cultural capital.

High cultural capital are those who hang around exclusive membership clubs, have certain respected occupations, etc
That is quite a stereotype.
Got alot of successful hawkers drive mercedes benz and have member club to go swim or play golf.

You all belong to higher or lower SES?
I also lower SES.

All the higher SES boxes, I dont have tick.

but I tick 2 lower SES boxes :- 1)Singlish/dialects at home or daily.
2) eating at hawker or at home (more like ta-bao)

Rowan Luc uses the word "can" so it's not the case all the time. Anyway we shouldn't make sweeping statements about others. No such thing as "normal", only "common". We don't need to let such views affect our choices.

no wonder you donít see our ministers eating at hawker centre.
Some people probably lap up such SES suggestions and, in order to fit into that criteria, limit themselves. Rather silly to not allow yourself up live a full life that includes local hawker fare etc. These same folks may go to Europe and praise their street hawkers there.

It's not stereotype. It's a fact.

SES = socioeconomic status.
CS = cultural capital.
SS = social capital.
PS = psychological capital.
PS = political capital.
ES = educational capital.

something very very wrong with the person who wrote this

even ministers do eat at hawker and speak broken english in parliament.

classification by job is also not a good criteria. many blue collar ppl are actually rich, especially business owners.
I can't find much info on the author, Rowan Luc (sounds french Vietnamese), or any info on the actual research. Maybe in the survey originally done, the answers came back more atas and pretentious even if untrue.

Seriously, if u all rich, will u all eat at hawker on daily basis? I seriously doubt so too.

In terms of taste and ambience, hawker cannot fight atas restaurants lor.
