DIY Face Mask creation

Picture 1 and 2 are the two different designs.

Picture 1 is more cater to kids or people with smaller face size.

Picture 2 is more for adult but it does not cater to people with face of broader diameter. Comparison with the picture 1 cardboard to the right.

Pple with broader faces, use a string to measure, half the string you should get what is the best length for the bottom, adjust accordingly.

First you have to draw this out on paper. From the paper cut and translate it to a cardboard. This cardboard will be reuse over and over again so do not use the A4 paper as it would not last. You can use the backcover of A4 foolscap paper or even from a carton box. Construction paper, only those which are very thick.

Trace the design onto materials. You will need a pen to help. ZhongXingBi or liquid/gel pen will do. Ball point cannot.

Materials for consideration.

1. MagicClean Wiper
Use for floor cleaning, dry type.
There are other types but up to you to explore. 1 sheet can take 4 small or 3 big template. Guideline is non woven fabrics, likely to double layer on front side, then double layer on backside to create a more filtering mechanism.

2. Microfibre cloth
You should choose a thicker one. This is chosen as opposed to cotton.

3. Activated Carbon filter (3mm at least)
This is perhaps the more difficult to find material. Most activated carbon filter exist in powder form so unless you have this material on hand, it would be difficult sourcing for this material. The function of this layer is to remove odour smell.
It has a pretty long chinese name but nevertheless, I will put the link to it. Once transportation recovers, you should be able to order in.

4. Paper Materials
I discourage the use of paper materials because it will disintegrate when washing. However, if you design yours with side holes to fill materials like loading ammo cartidge, you can proceed using this material.

Double Wiper, Activated Carbon Filter, Microfibre, Double Wiper this should give you a good six layers. Without Activated Carbon filter, you will still have 5 layers. This excludes the front and back cloth which will give you an extra two layers of filtering there.

5. Cloth
If you cannot find cloth, use old T-shirt to make your own mask.

You should template on the material then cut out later, this will take you some time. Always do a set first to try out. You will need full concentration to avoid mistakes. Dimensions must be very accurate as sewing will be difficult.

Sandwich the materials, I am showing you the top and bottom.

Sew four corners so that the material will not move.

Lastly assemble it with Venus Elastic Band, which is cut to 23cm. Venus Elastic Band is about $2.80, comes in black and white color. You'd find that cutting out cloth is not easy, so as you do, do it slowly. Tell yourself to do slowly. Repeat this statement to yourself as you are doing, else you going to prick your finger or sew wrongly. Once finished, use a plastic bag to seal the mask up. You can use it at a later time.

For maintenance, you can wash, you can iron, you can hair blower it. Up to you.

The center part should be overlapping, if you cannot overlap and still got gaps, have a strip of sandwich in the middle. This can be the strongest or the weakest part of the mask. So take note of it.

The embedding of gardening ties can be the top and bottom at the edge. You just need small stitches to reinforce it. This mask itself will be 8 layers strong at least.
==================================
Update on Feb 11

This is the 10 layer filtering media. Showing the internal section of it. The black ties are gardening tie. Those who buy trash bags and have trash bag ties, also can use but they are thinner. Gardening tie is available at hardware store.

Threading the needle should be the more challenging part for most people. If you cannot thread through, turn the needle eye to the other side and try again. There should be one eye side easier to thread than the other so that is the trick of threading.

So sorry if my sewing sucks here. Those who are verse in sewing machine will find this faster.
Making the first mask should take you about 3hrs or so on average.

After making the first one, which likely to suck like me, you should find making the second one easier and faster. The key to making this is to template and ready everything before assembling, it would be like lego. Sewing will take most of the time but making everything itself isn't easy.

Finding non woven fabrics would be the more challenging part.

Why not 3M floor wiper?
They are thinner.

Why not use Japan floor wiper?
The wiper is definitely fine woven but there are holes to capture dirt, you find that double layering does not help much to reinforce the filter. Magic Clean Dry wiper is also from Japan. Mask should work not just in virus situation but also during Haze situation, so you are addressing two situations here.

Can use aircon filter?
Well, you have to observe the holes. If they too big, then it is not suitable materials. What we want to do here is to find the most closely tight woven material.

Why not use cotton?
Cotton is fibre, so might as well use microfibre which is more tightly woven than cotton. You find that cotton itself is loosely woven to each other.

Can use charcoal powder?
Powder should stick to materials so that you do not breathe in, else you might create a very sticky situation for yourself. Powder can stick on to the mucus in your nose, end up you have some breathing problems if you are not careful.

Which cloth materials to choose from?

Sport clothes usually have more porous materials to allow skin to breathe. Thick cotton shirts is more of to keep warm. As each of us have own preference, I can't really tell you which one is better, since it is what you prefer end of the day. Take the cloth, cover your mouth and breathe, you should know which want you want, you like after you have try it out.

This part is more on physically trying it out.

On the use of micro fibre
The idea of micro fibre is to tank vapour on both sides. Barber shop have hair dryer, toilet have hand blower, hair dryer exist in portable form so you can blow hot it at interval. This will disinfect to some degree.

Hot water recommended for washing, use chopstick if need be to avoid being scald by hot water.
