Man diverts calls from loansharks to police

AsiaOne
Thursday, Sep 08, 2011
SINGAPORE - Having had enough of harassment by loansharks, Ng Leng Huat diverted their calls to a police hotline.

It is believed this is the first time such calls have been diverted to the police.

Ng told the court last week that he was fed up with the constant calls and diverted them to the Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre.

The Straits Time reported that on March 27, 2011, police officers manning the hotline received several calls asking for Ng. One call was from an overseas caller who gave his name as "Jimmy".

Jimmy became agitated and shouted vulgarities before hanging up when he was told he was speaking to a police officer.

Ng was today jailed three weeks for assisting the offence of using abusive words on a police officer.

District Judge Eddy Tham said that Ng had wasted police resources and made officers victims of harassing and abusive calls.
