The Official EDMW Hungry Ghost Festival 2018 Thread

It's that time of the year again, folks.

The time when the gates of hell open, and the starving spirits within return to the world of men for a month's reprieve.

A time to remember and revere departed loved ones.

A time to show charity to those with no-one to honour their memory.

A time to keep faith in the dark angels of the netherworld and their ability to maintain the spiritual peace.

A time to gather around the bonfire and tell scary stories.

A time to have lots of spooky fun.

Let the festivities begin - the Official EDMW Hungry Ghost Festival Thread is back in its 2018 edition.

And yes, here I am - your usual host.

Many thanks to Dr Nacht.
Can you also include the general advice about 7th month which you said in your AMA thread just now?

Yes, of course.

As follows:

Do not antagonise the ghosts in any way.

Do not ask them for blessings or favours. You are praying FOR them, not TO them.

Refrain from disturbing the offerings for the ghosts (it is okay to clear or move them several hours after they have been laid out or burned), or trespassing into spaces reserved for them.

The principal days on which offerings are made en masse are the first, fifteenth and last days of the Seventh Month.

Offerings for random hungry ghosts should not be laid out or burned within your home or its compound; do this some distance away, or at a public place like a temple.

Offerings for your loved ones can be made within the grounds of your home, and should always include an address slip with the intended recipient's full name, date of birth and date of death.

Do not offer anything apart from food, traditional incense paper and simple paper clothing.

It is kind to make offerings to the Hell deities, as well, because they are tasked with protecting you from the hungry ghosts and maintaining the peace; offer them tobacco, alcohol and roasted meat.

This is what an address slip looks like, by the way.

Again, it is only for use in cases where the burned offerings are for a specific person (i.e. dead relative or loved one).

Details to fill in: name of recipient, recipient's date of birth and recipient's date of death.

Do not fill in details of sender; leave this blank, or put 'from someone who misses you' (or similar equivalent).

Include slip with offerings to be burnt.

I have seen people do it at the grass patch in front or behind their HDB block. Is this OK?

Don't do that; it is a fire hazard and very dangerous.

Use a bin.

Name is not enough because someone else may share the same name.

To conclusively determine identity, there must be a minimum of 3 identifying particulars (name, DOB, DOD).
