no matter how good the wax/clay/gel/pomade is, you still need to have some know-how. product is just half the work, another half is yourself.
blow drying is a must if you wanna have a good hairstyle be it for volume or to backcomb unless you are those rare 1% guys with natural good hair.
always wet your hair and towel dry and subsequently blow dry the way you want your hairstyle to be. I recommend getting a roller comb to roll up and blow if you into undercut hair like Blumaan.
if you are more into kpop style long hair with volume type, I always tilt my head downward and blow dry it.
for product wise I really recommend Hanz de fuko Claymation. I tried lots of product before from gatsby to bedhead to joice to by vilain and many more. Hanz de fuko Claymation give you a good hold and easy to wash off. it's also a organic product which is very important in a long run. you won't want to be bald when you get older due to all this hair product you been using over the years.
btw this may sound ridiculous but the more I use HDF the smoother and better my hair is. it's the like bb cream of hair product.
get a heat protection spray too if you can to protect your hair from all the blow drying.
for hair spray. I use this cheap and good Mandom Corp $6.90 spray. it have Japanese words all over with large "MEN'S SPRAY" in the middle. white/grey and black in color depend on you like it scented or unscented. I only use hair spray if I know i gonna be out for a long time or for a neater and formal look to keep it long lasting. also for volume wise same as blow drying, bend down and spray and hold there for 2 3 sec.
lastly what works for me may not work for everyone. I have thick hair and my hairline is different. just here to give some tips and guide.
