hi guys,

first im not sure if this is the right place to put this post. moderators pls move it to the correct place if its wrong.

okay now the issue. i have a drive thats encrypted but i lost the recovery key to the drive. and i need to retrieve some of the files inside which belongs to one of the user. i am able to log in to the system with a 'guest' acct with no admin privileges. however, when i try to recover the data from this user, i would need admin rights as its locked by windows security feature.

how would you guys handle this case?

No BitLocker password.

No recovery key.

No admin privileges.

It does look a bit suspicious.

I don’t have a key. What else can I do?

Unfortunately, if you can’t find your key, and no other administrator on the PC can find a backup copy either, you’ll need to restore the PC to factory default settings. Only choose this option as a last resort because it will delete your personal data from the PC. While it helps protect your data against unauthorized access, it also prevents you from ever accessing your data again.

Depending on your Windows configuration, you might be able to restore your PC to its factory default settings directly from the Windows recovery screen.

i am aware that its meant to protect the data from getting stolen or accessed when the machine is lost. however, im open to ideas on how to go round bout it. seen a few website online but does not seem to help.

The whole point of hdd encryption is to prevent what you're trying to do.

Can try data recovery companies if data is important enough.

Erm, do you mean professional data recovery companies have means to overcome Bitlocker's encryption and recover plaintext data or recovery key without password, recovery key or admin rights?

Else they will just recover a bunch of gibberish bytes.

Is there a backdoor somewhere in Bitlocker's design that allows data recovery specialists and law enforcement to bypass Bitlocker?

TS has the user password, but no admin rights. Admin rights is control by the win system.

Some data recovery tools can over ride the admin rights as long as the user password is supplied.
It is still possible to recover the encrypted data. It's worth a try if the data is important since normally no payment is made if no data is recovered.

Thanks for the feedback. But its gonna be costly if i were to use professional data recovery services. Hence im open to other ideas or suggestions; besides formatting.

If you have backup to Windows email account, u can request for the token to be send to the email. I did that's few times and works great.
