What makes the GL553 worth $400 more than the FX553 other than the 8gb ram increase?

What do you think of the UX310 G7P? Do you think is worth to invest more than $1700 on a laptop for polytechnic use?

No, I bought a 2.1k laptop, not worth imo, the lab exercises don't require much computing power, go for light weight can Liao.. unless u are in design courses that do AutoCAD and rendering, then different story...

Keep the $400, 2 years later sell off the FX553 and buy another 1k laptop with even better specs and more warranty!

ASUS FX553 seems to be the better choice,

there is an option to increase the ram to 16gb for $89

Thanks for all the replies, I guess I will just get the FX553, better value.

Is the road show open to the public?

No, the roadshow is for polytechnic students only.
IT show 2017 coming up soon though, 16-19 March.

I think most of the essentials are covered in the freebies that come with the laptop in the poly roadshow. 1TB external HDD, mouse and backpack/carry case.

I going to nyp. No brand is the best, it just depends on what u need. Personally i'm more inclined to trust dell and asus over acer.

i can tell u from a ex poly student experience its best to get a lightweight notebook (if u are not doing design, autocad, rendering etc.)
u will probably be using excel, ppt, word, pdf, some command line client (for engineering/IT students)
i carried 2kg laptop + 1-2kg~ of books, extra gym clothes and shoes to poly everyday... painful for the back in the long run:s22::s22:

and go to sch with windows laptop no need accessories other than ur mouse.. if u need to transfer files can always use google drive, i doubt u need to transfer very large files that need 1tb hdd:s13::s13:

Since the 1050 is better than my current desktop gtx 650 I will likely use it as replacement, so not wasted.

Im also waiting for poly to start lol, I did not bring a laptop to secondary school.
Unfortunately this year roadshow only got acer, asus and hp :slant:.

Haha, but the FX553 only got 256GB SSD, install this download that, sure run out of space.
