Hi All,

I just signed up for M1 1gbs fibre. Does anyone know cat 6 or cat 7 cable is more suitable? And how does one check the quality of the cable? Any particular brand that is recommended?

1) doesn't matter since they both can support 1GBPS. If have the budget get 7.
2) this can't confirm till I have to test it with a device that can help u check.
3) 3M I think.

Cat. 7 is an ISO standard. What really matters are the standards set by TIA. Cat. 5 and up would suffice for gigabit, get Cat. 6a if you really want to "futureproof".

I took a walk around Sim Lim and noticed the same cat cable with same length are selling at different price. How do I go about finding a quality cable with the best connection?

No way you can tell unless one dwells into the electrical properties of the cable which no layman will do. Even if u find out the cable is poor quality what can u do?

The rule of thumb is to buy from reputable retailers so that the cables they sell are usually okay. Their procurement department does alot of background checks and product testing before importing in bulk..

Buying from Sim Lim is it a risk? Or should I buy from challenger?

Challenger is good and fine, as i had bought a 20 meters Cat 5e years ago, no problem.

Sim Lim Square accessories shop at 4th level (#04-70) where i bought Cat 6 & Cat 7 flat cables from them.
So far no problem.

Cat 6 and Cat 7 has no differences.
Cat 5e is fine as it is also for gigabyte.

Cat 5 is up to 100 Mbps only.

If you are getting 2 or more then consider different colours to easy differentiate.

Cat. 5 can do gigabit

Why do you need Cat 7 in the first place? Any Cat 6 cable will handle 1Gbps with ease.

Do note that it is mentioned in some article I read earlier that there exists a lot of fake Cat 7 cables that are essentially just Cat 6. Just that you will pay more for them because it is called Cat 7.

Look at the comment of your article. The author has acknowledged that Cat5 can go 1000mbps. Just not advisable over long distance.

The picture you embedded agrees that Cat. 5 does 1Gbps.

Have cat 3 doing 100 Mbps.

Point is, unless you're laying 1km long trunking, unlikely to need the higher cat. By the time you see the need to move, time to move house.
