They say the minimum initial deposit is US$3,500 "to receive telephonic transfer (wire) rebates and customer referral rebates." So why not fund to that level? The money doesn't disappear. Apparently they'll also rebate any wire transfer fee you pay for that initial deposit, up to US$100.

They also say this in their FAQs: "While waiting for your account paperwork and funding to be processed, you can practice trading with USD$100,000 of virtual money in our 'Papermoney, paperMoney, or Paper Trading' simulation. We also encourage you to explore our Software Manual."

thinkorswim is a waste of money

Do not be fooled by thinkorswim as they charge very high commissions and their customer service is not good. per trade is USD$10.65 so when you buy and sell stocks you have to pay them USD$21.30 even before you can make any money. This is ridiculous.

I high recommend everyone to check out charles schwab where commissions are only $5 per trade to trade or invest in US stocks.

Yes able to hold stocks. But rates might be different if you are holding stocks. Am not sure about that as I don’t buy and sell stocks.

Once you have tried Interactive Brokers, you will not be thinking about these other so-called branded U.S brokers. I'm a satisfied customer of IB.

There is a paper trading account on TOS that you may use to trade without using real money (hence the name paper trading account). The paper trading account is available whether you fund your account or not. The difference is that if you did not fund your account, the data on your paper trading account is deferred by 15 minutes.

Commission can be lowered if you are associated with some organization, as pointed out in some previous posts. Customer service is okay, you may text, phone or email them for support. Support is 24 hours using the chase-the-sun model, so at night, the support from TD Ameritrade will pick up your phone if you call them.

I'm sure their service is fine, but if you actually want to chuck it around in optionsland, use Interactive Brokers instead; they're way cheaper and you'll probably find the execution is a lot better.

Recently, I read about the US Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) coverage and US estate tax in the IB thread. Thus I wrote to TDA support. I got a reply that said TDA Singapore accounts do enjoy the SIPC coverge but asked me to consult a tax advisor regarding the US estate tax. Does anyone know if the cash balance in TDA Singapore account is subjected to US estate tax?

In all likelihood cash held at TD Ameritrade is not exempted from the U.S. estate tax, if that's what you mean. (Whether it's subjected to U.S. estate tax or not depends on a couple factors, notably on how much of it there is and on how much of the decedent's other assets are U.S. estate taxable.)
