Yes, it’s compulsory unless you already have some sort of US visa. The ESTA is the replacement for the old visa-waiver program; you apply for the Esta and get a yes/no/maybe response immediately (usually yes), and once you’ve got the “yes” you’re good to fly.

Hit this link here to apply (the website should be esta.cbp.dhs.gov); any other website is ripping you off.

Enjoy the States! Be careful if you’re going anywhere that might be snowy.

It is only compulsory for those entering the US by air and cruise. If entering by land, no need.

Ok ESTA applied, pending approval.

Anything else to do?

Dang ok. Am I supposed to receive an email confirmation?
I don't recall receiving any email notification on the approval. If I remember correctly, will need to check back on the web page with the reference number or something.

What would be the best carrier for mobile services in the US on the east coast? I need a prepaid sim with US calls and at least 2gb data for 14 days. Any recommendations? Preferably local telco can supply but if need to go US and buy also ok.

Not worth to get data passport?
If you don't need to call, data passport works for me. Used only about 2gb for 2 weeks. Mainly on Google maps and google information.

Of course some area no network but I will think, even if you used local sim card, you may also have the same problem. Had this problem at some parts of Yosemite, most parts of Death Valley, etc.
