Hi, need you guys suggestions and feedback.

Currently, I have my Router placed next to TV and cordless phone. This is a bad place as the wireless signals are interfering with each other and hence wifi signals further away from the living room is bad.

I have thought of another place for the router, but there are many other devices (TV, PS3, desktop 1, desktop 2) connecting to the router. I can't really shift them away because if i change to another place, i will need to wire it back.

Did a search about ethernet switch/hubs and found out that they could so-called extend or duplicate the signals coming from the ONT.

Hence, I was thinking if I could connect ethernet switch to ONT, and connect router/TV/PS3 to it?

_____
Set-up now

TP>ONT>ROUTER >(PS3/TV/desktop 1, desktop 2)

and is this possible below?

TP>ONT>Ethernet Switch>Router/(P;)S3/TV/Desktop1, desktop 2)
___

Recommendation
TP>ONT>ROUTER >(PS3/TV/desktop 1, desktop 2) + Unmanaged Switch
->More ports for Ethernet connections

=> THis is no brainer approach , you just need to put one of the Lan Port output to link to a switch, then the rest of the Switch's ports can be used for more Ethernet connections

and is this possible below?

>>TP>ONT>Ethernet Switch>Router/(PS3/TV/Desktop1, desktop 2)
Answer is YES but needs a managed switch which you may not be able to handle the configuration.

If purely want to have more ethernet ports, just follow above recommendation.

Switch In front is mainly used to bypass ISP Vlan settings so that Generic router without vlan settings can be used to replace ISP issued router.

It is possible with Managed Switch with vlan settings to segregation ports used for WAN/ONT & The general Lan Ports group.
however you need to have the know how on the managed switch configuration .

Thanks, have the clearer picture now. However, due to space constraints, i can't put router near the ONT.

Because my tv console area contains my ONT, TV, PS3, blu-ray, router and cordless phone. Hence it is interfering with my wireless connection and i have to move the router elsewhere. The problem is, I have TV, Ps3, desktop connection all wired to router and that placement cannot be changed unless i connect all to a ethernet switch and placing router somewhere further (just for wifi solely).

Is there any problems if I place the switch before a router. Probably an unmanned switch? Will the speeds/bandwidth coming from ONT be split between ports from the switch?

TV Console Area

Fixed: ONT, PS3, Blu-ray player, TV and other entertainment device and cordless phones.

Probably can be moved: router

Most of the standard setup will be

ONT liao must Router
Router must switch or PC/TV/PS3

so usually we start ONT > ROUTER > Switch

Is like 1 2 3

Cannot 132 or 132

Reason ONT usually issue only 1 Internet IP address. So this 1 and only internet IP address must give router.. if you connect a switch to ONT (only 1 device would work and the other device will not get internet or IP)

The router will provide internal IP address for your PS/Laptop/TV and Mobile. so after router will be your house device.

On the signals are interfering (I agree that DECT phone and wifi network side by side will cause an issue). Maybe you can try and see if u turn off the DECT Phone will this improve your wifi network Coverage? If the coverage is still the same maybe is the router limitation.

What the router brand and model.

I see. That means if I place switch before router. Only 1 port will have internet connection?

Just like how the ONT work?
My router is Asus Ac3200

If u choose to setup

ONT > Switch > Router

Yes other device may not get an working PUBLIC IP address to go online. A switch is usually use to extend network Port.

ONT - Power Source
Router - Power Socket
Switch - Power Ext. Cord

Something like tat in layman.

Your proposed setup should work fine. I too have a switch between router and ONT.

Oh thanks. Then i might need to find other ways to go by. But then, I am able to direct connect wire from ONT to my desktop and it works. This is when i did a testing without router.

Does that mean you have many ports on your switch, of which one goes to router? While the rest of the ports for other uses? All ports works ?

are u on ONR or ONT? cos if u on ONR, u should be able to use a switch and the router will need to change configure as AP.

feel free to correct me if i am wrong, cos iirc i saw my friend's house is using ONR and directly add a switch before adding his router(configured as AP).

YES ONR can put a switch in before router. Jurong640 what your ISP?

If the purpose is just to shift your router for better wifi coverage then any type of switch you put between your ONT and router will work.

But if you plan to use the same switch for other devices then you need a switch with vlan capability since you need to separate the ONT-Router network with the rest of the devices.

Yup, i'm thinking to get a 8-port switch.
From there, One goes ONT, one goes router, one goes TV, one goes PS3, and one goes desktop.

Means, i will need a managed ethernet switch instead of unmanned switch ?

I'm using M1 Fibre.

Yes, managed/smart switch with vlans. Take note you need two ports for your router (wan + lan)

Here is the clearer picture of my layout.

So i'm thinking of using router solely for wifi as it will be spaced much apart

For your Proposed layout, you need to consider Managed Switch.
This is explained in post #2 HMAN.

No matter where you put the router there will be interference on 2.4GHz band due to cordless phone.

You still consider the Original layout.
The only consideration is that loss of 2.4GHz in the living room, may include the whole premise.
But there are people in the same setup do not have much issue.

Ask yourself, do you have 2.4GHz devices only.
There are devices are on both 2.4GHz & 5GHz common.
Single router do not provide enough wireless for whole premise.

Thanks. I'm mostly using 5ghz on my devices. But the signals, be it 2.4ghz or 5ghz, it is very weak in the kitchen. I tried those wifi extenders and repeaters, it is making more AP, which is confusing. Speed wise, its cut half.

For my proposed set up, i am thinking of placing the router around 2meters away from the current position (i have the ethernet cable already laid till there). Hence you see from the picture (bottom right), the router is over there. It will be away from the TV console

Unless your router proposed area is a good location that gives good coverage otherwise not worth doing so much.

Assuming putting the router at the proposed location, you just need 2 LAN cables , one to connect to ONT and the other to route it to switch.

If you insist on putting switch in front, you can refer to 2 threads that I shared here on how to deploy

1.Managed switch in front of ONT and 2. the other thread with 2 switches but single LAN cable between them to carry internet incoming traffic, router output to internal LAN.

Buy 2 TPlink SG108E easy smart switch for your setup.

Yes complicated solution to fix a simple dect phone issue that you can Opt to purchase those running at 1.8GHz version or move the dect phone base.

On your Proposed set up, you have to config both Managed Switch.
The other switch at the data point to router.

It is best to share your premise layout.
So as all can advice you properly.
