1070TI or 1080?

Hey guys,

Im torn between the two. Before anyone says wait for the new gen, ive been waiting since feb(during the bitcoin craze) where prices of gpu shot up like nobody business.

I own a 144hz monitor. I play games like R6/BF1/FC5 at 1080p. Not intending to go 4k anytime soon.

So with 20xx/11xx gpu out of the question, which is really best for my needs(not want) rite now?

1070ti or 1080? (Looking at MSI Gaming X/Asus ROG Strix - i like the aethestics look. palit/zotac out of the question)

I'd disagree though. 1070ti is very close to 1080 and quite a step above 1070. Overclocking the 1070ti will yield performance of a stock 1080, whereas 1070 can't overclock to reach the 1080 at all.

Pricing wise, 1070ti is of a better value than 1080. It's a 1080 essentially. But with slower memory and no factory overclocking applied, though you can just slide a few bars in the overclocking software and there is your overclocking lol

For TS, 144hz, your cpu overclocking is more important. The more powerful your GPU is, the more you CPU need to make up and not bottleneck the performance. Since you plan to run some recent titles, I'd say get the 1080 if the pricing don't defer from the 1070ti for more than $100, as they are almost the same performance, I don't think you should overpay that much for the slight performance gain the 1080 have over the 1070ti.

I was caught in the same predicament 2 months back. I end up going for GTX 1080 for two reasons:
- The overclocked performance of GTX 1070 Ti is closely match to GTX 1080 stock. Since I water-cooled my card and does OC, I can easily surpass an OC-ed 1070 Ti.
- Cost of higher end 1070 Ti are really close to stock 1080, so top up a bit more for the 1080, which will give better mileage.

FYI, I'm using Dell SE2417HG 24" going at 1920x1080 60Hz, so that's more than enough juice for me to push for Ultra settings.

For 1080p, the performance difference between 1080 and 1070Ti at Ultra settings is quite small. I would go with the 1080 if the price difference is less than 20%.

See seller receipt. If they buy like more than 2, then it's likely for mining. Unless he can justify so. Also, get the receipt, or at the very least, have distro sticker date on it to have the warranty honored.

Check the heatsink and the fans. Whether are they oxidized and/or clogged with dust or not. If mined for less than 6 months and well maintained at low TDP mining, it's actually okay to hoot.

I got mine as a mining set, but the condition is freaking new. No oxidation, no dust (not even at fan blades or the backplate or anywhere that I can see on the heatsink fins). With box and everything, so I pull the trigger for mine.

144Hz depends on the monitor, not the GPU. I'm currently running at 144Hz on a GTX 1050Ti.

144hz means the screen refresh 144 times per second. Also can mean it's optimal for 144fps gaming. That's the easiest way to remember.

1070 ti can overclock lar. Nvidia imposed a rule to 3rd party gpu maker not to do factory overclocking and cannot use the word overclocked/oc in their products. But that doesn't mean you can't overclock it. By default, Nvidia GPU Boost 3.0 included in the Pascal lineup is an auto-overclocking feature, where when your GPU is at acceptable temperature, the GPU will pull more power and slowly up its core clock until the max clock set by the user and try to maintain it. When it get too hot, it will throttle down the core clock until feasible temp is achieved.

With all said, both 1080 and 1070ti is both overclockable by the end user.

From my perspective i look at 2nd hand prices, i find it more reasonable to buy 2nd at this time because of recent events. So 1070 n 1080 is more appealing to me haha.. just got a 1070 for my friend @ 350.. it came DOA and i rma-ed to get new one.

To be honest i think need 1080ti if strictly must have 144fps MIN. otherwise gotta tone down the details alot.
I am those kind cannot stand any framerate drop below refresh rate, even if i own 1080ti i don't play max setting unless it can comfortably attain the fps i want.

My tactic would be wait after rtx out, 1080ti prices sure drop further then ts can hoot it second hand with local warranty. Issue resolved, dont like just sell the card off.. not much damage done.

You don't need 1080ti for 1080p 144hz. Unless you want to get Witcher 3 to run 144fps at max settings lar hahaha. Me too, I'm not too concern on frame drop as I don't play competitive and as long it don't have drastic drop for too many time in one session of gaming. I don't always run FPS counter either. 1 or 2 rounds of stable FPS, I would turn it off for better immersion hahaha

Ya.. i quite competitive.. Drop below 60 is end of the world for me. Since i have nvidia geforce experience running, i can look at it anytime i encounter slow downs.
