Hi out of thread abit.

I have a few question regarding private driving instructors/lessons
(if this is not the right thread, kindly direct me to the right 1 thanks!)

1. How much $$ can one actually save by going the private route?
I actually have a military class 4 licence unconverted. I basically know how to drive and park so i m wondering if private can save me some money.

2. Will it take a long time to get a license going the private route compared to the school?

3. How reliable are these Private Driving Instructors (PDI)? how do i verify if they are registered and qualified??

4. Where can you actually find these instructors other than in the forums? is there an official site etc?

Perhaps some oldbirds can share your experience and thoughts on this?
Newbird here. Thanks in advance!

Hello! This is based on what I've gone through when I was researching for myself previously so hopefully this helps :)

1. Private should be cheaper for your case since you basically already know how to drive. Just that some PDIs *might* not want to take up cases like yours because they know they can't earn much from you. Not sure if you've heard that some lousy PDIs will purposely ask you take more lessons even though you're ready because they want to earn more lessons fee from a student.

2. Refer to point 1. Last time on HWZ I saw someone posted a leaflet on an express course in CDC for those that've already learnt driving in NS. Not sure if that's cheaper but definitely faster than the usual haha. Maybe you can call and check with the school about the duration and fees.

3. It's a hit or miss thing. Reliable and good ones always no slot, those act like they very good one always come forum and create fake users to promote themselves. Best is get your PDI through word of mouth, but if cannot, then you need to try your luck based on reviews online liao. The TP police website has a list of qualified PDIs and their passing rates on the website.

(Can't post link due to sufficient posts, but you can google "traffic police passing rate for private instructors)

4. Point 3!

Hope the above may assist you. Personally tried both private and school. Usually people go from school to private, but I went from private to school haha. Hope the above might help you!

not true. Some instructors prefer experienced students as new inexperience students will spoil their cars and instructors will feel heart pain esp if their car is new 😁

private instructor will access your driving skills book test date on 1st lesson.

Agree depends on individual, which is why I wrote those based on personal experience and research from last time. It really depends on the instructor, no fixed answer. See luck also.

I haven't heard of PDI booking test date based on 1st lesson though.

Hi, can anyone advise me on this.
So I took my tp today at 2pm. Prior to that I had one lesson from my PDI at 12pm. So total quoted from my PDI, charged me at $400 for rental and insurance, 27 for exam circuit. And 88 for lesson and circuit before test. (54 for 1h30min and 34 for circuit fee).
Totalling at a whooping $515.(400+27+88)
When I told my friends about this, they all were so shocked. Is this the current market rate now?

Hi all,

I’m looking for PDI at CDC. Please, I need a very patient instructor who wouldn’t raise his voice at me for careless mistakes. Preferably available once or twice every week, not too pricey (as long as it’s the average pricing, a little higher is fine). Communication through whatsapp/texting is preferred.

TIA!

Mr Lim. Teach auto at CDC (Ubi) using toyota vios. He trained me and is good. Hard to find a reliable one, i know.
$57 (1.5 hours).

Test rental of his vehicle is $400+. Just so you know the rates.

There are cheaper PDIs around. But, you pay for what you get.

PM me if you want contact as i am not sure if he wants his contact to be public on the internet.

But when I checked with my tester, he was shocked that I paid so much. He said 'the car also not new, why need so much for insurance'. And the thing I couldn't get over was paying so much and didn't pass.😣

Hi guys,

Just passed my TP this morning! (First Attempt)

He teaches manual.

If anybody look for PDI around west area can contact my instructor, Raymond.
He's pickup point is as lakeside MRT station there. Rate is 26/hr for non peak, 28/hr for peak.

He have teaching experience of 30years, driving a white mit lancer.
Basically, he's very patient with me and always say "There's no "un-teachable students unless the students itself don't want to learn." He will let you drive around Jurong West area till he feel that you're ready for TP route. Learning from him, you will feel that your on road driving is much better compare to those school learners 1. He got his own ways of teaching and own theory of booking test date. So is either you want or don't want to listen.

One thing to note is that, he can't stand stubborn people that always talk back. He is those responsible type unlike some will fall asleep or don't care about you. If you don't mind him listening to oldies and eating tidbits while teaching, then it should be alright.

There's a one-time registration fee of S$50, and for test day, there's a charge of S$78 for use of his car(26 x 3). He will explain and calculate everything nicely for you. So don't have to worry.

Those who want his contact can PM me. :)
Hi could you pm me his number? Can't pm due to post quota. Thanks!
