Is it possible to side load apps onto Mibox S?

Any recommendation on how to watch live EPL on mibox s?

Yes you are able to sideload apps on Mi.Box S.

As for EPL, the legitimate way is to subscribe to SingTel TV or Starhub TV.

Singtel Cast price plan for references.
https://blog.moneysmart.sg/entertainment/cheapest-premier-league-subscription-singtel-cast/

Another way is to pay for VPN. The following Straits Times report was from 2013 but it is still useful now in 2019.

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/epl-fans-can-stream-matches-live-from-us-site

(We know in the end Starhub is able to cross carry EPL with SingTel).

Using VPN is still considered as gray but it is said this has not been tested in court.

One example from top VPN vendor's guide of streaming sports.

There is no way for the government or any other intellectual property holder for the matter to know who is using those pirate apps.

The only way is to stop the sale of those boxes that come preinstalled with said apps.

Those "warning" from lawyers claiming that they know who download copyrighted material illegally via IP got shutdown by the state courts claiming that IP address isn't good enough evidence

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapo...ie-piracy-case

Even the lawyers who made the threat got punished

https://www.todayonline.com/singapor...medium=twitter

So it's basically the same as other "copyright respecting countries"

The government at most can only block piracy websites and ban physical sales of copyrighted material. This will prevent most people from obtaining said material.

However there will be a bunch of tech savvy people that know how to circumvent those blocks and there is nothing the government legally can do to stop them.

It is already mentioned in the government file that the proposed laws are targeting sellers of the boxes and not consumers and the previous court order is for ISO to block IPTV apps.

As for ways to circumvent the blocks I think that is also covered by the law and that was probably why the government was asking inputs for VPN in 2016.

But you guys using torrent download instead of streaming needs to be careful. If the rights holder get a warant to search your house and got your HDD containing the downloaded content then you will be in trouble.

All the expensive TV ISP mostly government own.
So how not to take action when a $100 android tv box with the right apps can give so much more entertainment to a family.

not so expensive, $40-$50 android TV box with the right apps is good enough. you can get a box with S905 chip, 2G RAM, 8/16GB NAND with a reasonably good brand.

The government is not targeting the users, in fact starhub and M1 are selling andriod TV box to their subscribers.

The government is only targeting at the sellers who bundled unauthorized app.

StarHub Go Streaming Box is running an operator version of Android TV OS.

Is M1 still selling a TV box? Nothing from their website now. The old Mibox page is now not available.

check under the broadband addon page, m1 is selling grossly overpriced ac ryan box at $120.

imo, it is a wrong choice. mibox s at $60 should attract more customers.

I see. It is S$5 for 24 months.

I agree. Mi Box S sells at around S$70-80 in the online marketplace, if M1 sells it at S$60 or even S$70 with one year warranty, there will be probably quite some takers.

Anyone even needing to ask what box to get should just get a mibox and call it a day.
If you are pro you will know what u want without asking.

Install and use original apps like YouTube, Yahoo Mail, Dropbox & WhatsApp etc. is not an issue.

Even if you don't update, still working well. The problems are usually arising from apps that are shady, and download illegal contents. If you use original stuff like Netflix, don't think would give users any trouble.

So, always use a reputable antivirus app, and established apps which doesn't infringe other's intellectual property.

Which anti virus to use?

In the above CH8 report in Chinese, the lawyer is saying that streaming is not considered illegal in the current law in Singapore.

She raised two points for the challenges of the new proposed law, one is which box to ban since Starhub itself is selling an Android TV box, second thing is streaming which is still legal here and there are legitimate streaming service like YouTube.
