Hello,

Anyone would be able to ans me the following?

"A battery charger is installed in a switchroom for supplying the
protection system of a main switchboard consisting of six 22kV
switchgear panels. You are required to install a 13A switched socketoutlet
for the battery charger from the distribution board which has a
30mA RCCB. You are asked to bypass the RCCB for the 13A
switched socket-outlet circuit. What is the reason for bypassing the
RCCB?"

Answer is distribution board RCCB is bypassed because, if the battery charger were connected after distribution board RCCB and say trip due to shorted to earth, the RCCB would trip entire distribution board and other equipment powered by distribution board.

You should bypass the distribution board RCCB and connect another RCCB to form the 13A switch socket outlet. In this case when the 13A switch socket outlet trip, it will not trip all the distribution board :D

Grad in 2013
I worked as RE for 1 year 8 months when I grad ... Waste of time
Followed by 4years of design firm
Passed fee first time
Failed PPE once
Passed interview first time
Seems interview not that difficult to pass although they did make it look like I didn't answer well... So wasn't confident after and totally not expecting to pass

There will be 3 interviewers with the chief interviewer sitting at the middle.
The interviewer are usually experienced PE and academician.
The passing rate is undisclosed but my take is it is high at probably >50%.

To me, the interview is to assess your personality, confidence, decision making, problem solving, site experience and some technical skills. They may throw you any question from the submitted PE report, past projects that you've listed in the track record, or even any situation that they want to assess you at.

Some of the question that I've encountered are:
"Since you have experience in XXXX project, what if the scenario today is XXXXX, what will you do?"
"Since you have proposed this method of remedial / construction, what if it do not work as expected, and the wall moved 200mm?"
"Please elaborate the framework / work flow of your remedial work to ensure that it can really solve the problem"
"Your proposal of construction / remedial is costly, how do you justify this to the owner? Isn't XXX (Method B) a better proposal, why don't you use it?"
"Your proposal will NOT solve the issue! You have never considered XXXX, XXXX, XXXX. How can you propose something like this?! You sure this will not jeopardize public safety?"
"Do you know how difficult it is for your proposal to be executed on site? Have you actually went down to site and see how they do the work How u are going to ensure the quality of work on site?

It is not uncommon that one of the interviewer to be extremely aggressive and will question each and every answer that you've given. The engineering instinct are best tested under stressed situation.

My final word is you need to brush out your decision making and judgmental skill. For every decision / word that you've spoken, you must have your judgement. Usually there is no right / wrong decision, it is the amount of information / knowledge that you have in hand that is affecting your judgement and decision.

All the best.

Just saw your reply ... Thanks for the tips ... Didn't see it ... Those taking the PE interview ... Please see this is gold ...

To add... The would scrutize your drawing if you require to submit and question why you do things this way or that ... They will grill you when u do your introduction on what you have presented in your presentation

Fee exam can take after u grad
Ppe exam can take 2.5 years after grad
Interview can take at 4 years after grad
Need 1 year design and 1 year supervisory experience minimally. U may see the requirements in the pe board website

I also grad in 2013
Have been working in consultant firm for 6 years and counting. Unlike u, no RE supervisory experience.

Fee take 1x
Ppe take 3x sia, finally pass this year despite 20.1% passing rate.

Still sitting on the fence for the pe interview, aiming to go in next year april-june period

So basically, i still need to work under the supervision of PE after i pass my FEE? I will need to look for a job which have PE inside of that company?

So the experience which before my graduation is not counted right ?
Thanks

They will collate several applicants to be included in a batch of interview. After your application in order, they will email you to tell you the date of interview. The email come quite fast around 2 weeks time. The interview date varies 1 month to 3 months. I know someone who applied on Sep and interview in Jan. I myself applied on mid July, received email in Aug to inform interview Sep. All the best for your application.
