usually i check my IBKR at the end of the year to see how much I gained/lost.

But I was curious how much money I lost because of Brexit so I checked my IBKR year to date performance and found that IBKR says I have a portfolio time weighted return of 14.07% in S$ terms :s13:

In the most part of the year, we were paralyzed by the trade war swings and inverted yield curve, added very little long term etf and only hoping to catch the bottom. The plan was to buy short term leveraged etf while waiting for the bear crash. Last month bought some iwda to restart dca. Had enough of playing with tqqq upro and tvix, won money on bullish etf but lost in tvix. Right now buying tech stocks before ER, got in on amzn, appl, nvda, bkrb. Missed the boat on amd.

So our results show doggedly dca etf has outperform punting while waiting for a crash.

My YTD TMR and MWR about the same 14.75% vs 14.88%.

Looks like my UK heavy portfolio is underperforming others due to Brexit, but I'm happy its 14% YTD instead of losing money!

At least its higher return that those who are holding onto cash only :s13:

Beside high pay , you need to be frugal and hardworking .. When I started work, my salary was only 2.1k.. Throughout my last 25 years, I never have any luck with money like striking lottery or buying a multibagger stocks instead I lost 100K in stocks investing in my first 10 years. For some reasons, my networth crossed 2 millions recently.. For my first 10 years of my career, I volunteer every overseas assignment or OT work to make up for my low pay and save 90%.. This helps me to accumulate my first capital.. However, this did not help much with increasing my networth as I was so risk averse after losing 100K.. My networth only increased drastically after I started investing in dividend stock and reit.. the compounding effect work very well after 7 to 10 years.

assiak average income was 4-5k per month and he also managed to do it

as he always say, financial freedom is a marathon, not a race, no matter how much dividends you are getting, as long as it is helping you to improve your lives for the better

No MrHighlander is right, you do need big bucks to make big bucks, being financially free is a different thing, you don't need a lot of money to be financially free. People who don't have a lot of material needs and wants can attain financial freedom a lot easier than others, conversely the ones who must have the best things in life can never be free even if they make 50k a month, its really the mindset that matters.

Congratulations! Your story is an inspiration to many. I was taught this principle by my Dad. He was a teacher and teachers do not get paid much. He is extremely frugal and invested all his spare cash into the stock market and that's how he is able to retire comfortably. It takes time, effort and patience.

You are lucky..Having a father with financial literacy is the best thing you can have.. Even though I know how to save but I never invest wisely so I wasted my first 10 years losing 100K and the next 7 years in financial hiatus and miss all the bull run after the GFC..

Yeah.. I m true blue sinkie..after serving NS and work for 25 years, I am close to half a century :(

this is the work ethic of the old generation that the new generation don't seem to understand. work hard at your job to increase your career prospects and income at the start.

New generation all want to get rich by stock trading and retiring at 30. :s13:

instead of trying to target retirement at 30, targeting retirement at 50+ will give you a lot more passive income to go travelling etc... as long as you keep healthy and fit.
