Anyway for those who want to change screen of their ThinkPads, this is the procedure:
- Buy screen from eBay/Aliexpress/taobao. If can match the FRU, even better, to get FreeSync support
- disable the built in battery
- Remove the screen bezel by working from the inside of the screen out (I realise this minimises the chance of the retaining clips on the bezel from breaking off). Ideally it would be good to get a spare bezel when you do the replacement just in case. Need to be very careful and conscientious during this stage cos got a hell lot of double sided tape/ glue to navigate around.
- remove the display cable and replace the screen. Unless you are changing from touch to non-touch or vice versa, you don't need to replace the cable
- depending on the thickness of your new screen, you may need to make some adjustments, e.g. add additional foam tape under the screen etc. This is recommended to minimise backlight bleeding (I realise the backlight bleeding on ThinkPads is mainly caused by the pressure of the bezel pressing against the screen). For me I used those index labels you can get from daiso (which is quite sticky) and stack them on top of each other until I got the ideal thickness where there is minimal backlight bleeding.
- put everything back together!
Now my next experiment is to replace the stock camera with the IR camera. Unfortunately I cannot seem to find a place which sells the necessary cables.
