how do you connect to internet without a compatible switch

My idea is to have a 2.5Gbe switch. But the uplink will still be 1Gbps for Internet.

But it is simple now, I use wireless uplink for Internet. 2.5Gbe is only between the two computers.

ONT -- SingTel Mesh Router (will remove in the future) -- Asus RT-AX82U -- wireless link -- Huawei AX3 Pro in repeater mode (only on when required) -- Mac Mini M1, Acer laptop, Brother Wireless Printer, WD MyCloud 3TB.

Mac Mini M1 -- 2.5Gbe -- Acer laptop

On the other hand, this is probably due to the slow speed of the Acer Swift 3 laptop (bought in Dec 2017, Core i5-8250U CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD).
So I tried again by copying files from the Acer to the Mac Mini M1 with the same three Ubuntu ISO files, it is really fast, I can see it is above 290MB/sec from the Activity Monitor. Apple is known to use fast SSD disks.
Indeed my Acer SSD is the bottleneck. And the SSD in my Apple Mac Mini M1 is much much faster.

TP-Link SH1206 Teardown, 2x10G SFP+ port for uplink, 4x2.5G Ethernet ports, about RMB999.
https://www.acwifi.net/11940.html

Main chip is Broadcom BCM53161XU, said to be the similar to the BCM53161XM chip used in QNAP QSW-1105-5T (5 port 2.5Gbe).

Nice.

I need to get a powerful desktop PC first, then a 10G capable switch, then a 10G capable NAS. Let me plan for it.

I will consider this in home improvement budget 2021 :D

I think this setup is way over the top for most people here.

Ask yourself, why need 10GBE network?

Maybe for those who like to do a lot of video editing.

Take note this is for internal home network. You can still use 1Gbps internet.

I based my 10GB network on the info from this video:

For my setup, since I am using it myself, I do not need more than 2x10GBE ports on a switch. Initially I was looking at the Netgear GS110MX. It cost somewhere about HK$1,938.00. Luckily it was out of stock when I went to the shop to get it. Instead I found the Qnap Qhora 301W. Cost about HK$2,500. It has 2x10GBe + 4x1GBe ports. A bonus is it also has Wi-fi 6. And a Cat 6A network cable that cost about HK$60.00

Now I work all my files off the Synology DS1618+ with 10GBe network card + 6 x 8TB HGST Enterprise drives. My iMac is connected to the 10G network via the Sonnet Solo 10G adapter via Thunderbolt 3. I get consistent 500MB/s write and about 900MB/s read.

Total cost of my 10G network is the lowest I have researched to date.

I also have a large collection of Movies and TV Series I purchased from Apple. Each full HD movie can be as large as 6GB.

All these movies are downloaded directly to my Drobo 5C attached to my iMac via USB3. Each movie will take about 3-5 minutes to complete download from Apple.

Drobo 5C has limited space, only 16TB, but the Synology has 38TB. So I back up all my movies to the Synology. copying a 5GB movie from Drobo 5C to Synology DS1618+ takes about 9 seconds.

Nice setup.

The NAS seems to be one of the more expensive one.

The QNAP Qhora 301W looks very good.

And for Macs, unfortunately Thunderbolt 10G adapter is rather expensive. For Windows desktop PC, 10G adapter is rather cheap. But for Windows laptop, either there is no way (not Thunderbolt capabale port), or similar to Mac.

I was actually reading this one last time: US$60 for 10G network
https://community.fs.com/blog/how-to-get-10g-network-for-less-than-60.html

And this one: US$250 with a 10G switch

I think 1Gbps internet is so so only and i hope the world can move beyond 1Gbps internet but can see that chance of doing that is quite low. Most countries mainly just 1Gbps only.

Windows 10 has built in smb multichannel.

Just buy 2x cheap usb 3 gigabit adapters and connect to your gigabit router/switch. don't need to configure anything like teaming. As long as both source and destination computers each have 2 ethernet plugged in, the transfer speed will double

Do we need both sides to be on windows for this to work?

My NAS has dual 1G ports but it is running Ubuntu

Managed to setup a 2.5G intranet this weekend.

RoUfkA6.png

Doing iperf3 test from my iMac to OpenWRT box

qKAHe4S.png

Total damage (excluding) : $388 RMB (2 USB 3.0 2.5G adapters) + $383 RMB (TPLink 2.5G network switch) = $771 RMB (~$160 SGD)

I am sure it can be cheaper during sales events. Nevertheless, its $160 minor upgrade to my home network.

nice!!

I also have ordered my 2.5G switch (TL-SH1005) from Taobao.
Did you need to install any driver for the openwrt router to detect the ugreen adapter?
