Buy from China around $160

My RT-AX82U China version was bought on 11.11 last year from Taobao (new set at RMB822) .

Just did a quick check, new set of RT-AX82U is about RMB819 in Taobao, opened set is lower at RMB729.

A few things to try:
1) make sure you do not have other devices accessing the internet and downloading stuff
2) try Viewquest speedtest server
2) use CH60 to see if that helps

But test client is also important. What is your device used for the test?

Test device plays an important part as well.

For example, my best wireless client (not counting using the router in media bridge mode) is the Dell work laptop with Intel AC9560 card, 2*2 AC 160MHz on the 5GHz band, theoretical speed is up to 1733Mbps for routers supporting 160MHz channel on the 5GHz band.

The following is the test speed with Viewquest speed test server (Singtel 1Gbps plan, Asus RT-AX82U China version).

1) close distance in the living room
Download speed is lower since the other family members are using Youtube.

2) inside master room with door closed. You can see that the upload speed drops significantly as the device may not be able to transmit back to the router due to weaker tx power from the device side (laptop) , even though the router may still have good tx power to send the signal to the device side (laptop).

Hi, I am using Asus RT-AC68U as my main router now. Thinking of upgrading my main router to Wifi6 when re-contract in a couple of months time (1gbps plan with ViewQwest). Any recommendation for upgrading to Wifi6 router? Too many different Wifi6 specs to choose from.

Also, is it worth to wait for Wifi6E router? I am not in rush to upgrade since i am satisfied with my current router.

Thanks!

realized the problem is with QoS Bandwidth limiter!
When it is on, every device is affected as the speed is reduced, even though the device is not listed on the QoS.

With QoS off, i get

Any idea why!?

Yes this is a known problem. RT-AX82U has a weak low end CPU, same as RT-AX58U and TP-Link AX10 (sub S$100 router). The Broadcom BCM6750 CPU is too weak to support meaningful QoS for 500Mbps plan.

In fact, it does not support good iperf3 either (my testing shows limit to 600Mbps).

FYI: Asus is using the same low end CPU in high end mesh router as well, like Zenwifi XT8.

QoS is not really useful for 500 Mbps anyway. So just disable it.

Higher end router with faster CPU like RT-AX86U may do better but may still not able to do meaningful QoS with 1Gbps, you may need faster x86 CPU or new Qualcomm CPU used in devices like Xiaomi AX9000.

If you are not in a rush, you can wait.

IMHO, no point waiting for WiFi 6E, but rather when WiFi 6E comes, the cost of good WiFi 6 router like RT-AX86U may come down.

Looking at the Viewquest Wifi 6 bundle, only one of the Wifi 6 mesh bundles seems to be of good value. Personally I consider Asus Zenwifi Mini XD4 to be a lousy mesh solution but that is just me.
https://viewqwest.com/internet/broadbandVery good value: Asus Zenwifi XT8 at S$59.9 per month.

1) Noted on Wifi6E. I no need Mesh system. I am ok to buy a separate router myself.

2) Take a quick look at AX86U, seems overkilled for family seldom into gaming? my budget around $200 range. Any good one?

3) Among vieqwest bundles, if I re-contract, the NETGEAR Nighthawk RAX40 AX3000 router cost around $175? is it as good as Asus one?

Personally I do not think RAX40 is a good router because of the Intel Lantiq CPU. You will be better off with Asus RT-AX58U (S$199-S$229 depending on offer). On the other hand, at S$175, I will still say it is a good value buy.

There is really no such thing as overkill for wireless router, pay for the best router you are willing to pay. Of course it will depend on your budget.

https://dongknows.com/best-wi-fi-6-routers/
Dongknows has the continuous updates to the best Wifi 6 router list. Asus RT-AX86U is still the highest rank Wifi 6 router in the market as of now.

Asus RT-AX82U and RT-AX58U (aka RT-AX3000 in US) are also in the list.

Netgear RAX50 and RAX40 are also in the list.

Lowest cost router in the list is probably TP-Link AX10 (sub S$100).

If you have Wifi 6 clients at home, it is really worth buying Wifi 6 routers. And it is cheap to buy Intel AX200 based add-on cards for your desktop/laptop. The following picture from Dongknows has a typo: Zenwifi AX is XT8 and not CT8.

You are better off with a Xiaomi AX6000 for around $150.

That’s because he is not able to rest Xiaomi routers else the list will be very much different.

That’s because he is not able to test Xiaomi routers else the list will be very much different.

Only Xiaomi AX3600 has international version (with weak TX power). Xiaomi AX6000 and AX9000 have no International version and also no SSH access.

So even if he tested the Xiaomi AX3600 international version the results will not be so good.

And if he tests Xiaomi AX6000 and AX9000, he will probably be disappointed with the poor FW features.

Do not get me wrong, Xiaomi routers are of very good value but probably will not be included in Dongknows list due to various reasons. The plain FW does not justify the excellent HW.
