Manchester United have reportedly been monitoring exciting young French attacker Hugo Ekitike as they prepare for a major squad overhaul in the summer. Erik ten Hag will have the final say on the targets the club eventually pursue, and Ekitike is thought to be one of the ones he’s most interested in, according to ESPN.

The Reds will be in the market for at least one new striker, and Ekitike’s potential plus his rumoured transfer value, thought to be as low as £13million, does make him a very appealing prospect from a United perspective. They could face stiff competition for his signature, though, with a number of Premier League sides such as Arsenal and Newcastle also thought to be scouting the teenager.

It’s easy to see why he’s attracting such attention after enjoying what’s been a breakout campaign for Ligue 1 side Reims, netting nine league goals in just 21 appearances.

Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong celebrates his 25th birthday on Thursday and has already arrived at a bit of a crossroads in his career.

The Barcelona star emerged as one of the brightest young players in world football ahead of his move to the Camp Nou, having shone for Ajax in the Eredivisie and on the Champions League stage. His performances at the Johan Cruyff Arena saw the Dutch giants bank a reported €86 million (£73.7m) for his services.

That represented a considerable profit for the Amsterdam powerhouses having reportedly signed him for just €1 from boyhood club Willem II back in the summer of 2015. The switch to Catalonia made De Jong one of the most expensive Dutch players in history - with compatriot and former Ajax teammate Matthijs de Ligt also securing a big-money switch to Juventus in the same summer.

Ajax signed players very cheap but sold them at very high price. Signed €1 for Frenkie de Jong & sold him to Barclona for €86 million.

Victory in the Youth Cup on Wednesday night was another step in the right direction, and further reward for one pillar of the club which has been effectively overhauled in recent memory.

Prior to being appointed the club's inaugural football director last year, John Murtough was tasked with overseeing the overhaul of United's overhaul of the academy and recruitment department.

A key aspect of the rebuild was putting the right personnel in place around the academy, with the appointment of individuals who could not only continue the youth to uphold the club's famed youth set-up but bring in fresh ideas to innovate it as well.

Murtough brought Nick Cox into the club and backed his appointment as the head of the academy, taking over the role from club great Nicky Butt. That summer also saw Youth Cup winning manager Travis Binnion arrive at the club as the head of player development at U14-U16 level, before taking his latest role as U18 lead coach a year ago.

It was last summer that United moved to appoint Justin Cochrane too. The 40-year-old had offers from the Football League and was in the running for the England U21 job before being tempted to move to United to work as the head of first-team development.

Just as important, though, has been the recruitment of players.

As part of the academy overhaul, United revamped their scouting and coaching operations to ensure they were competing for the best available domestic talent, as well as looking further afield for international recruits.

It was Murtough who chaperoned teenager Hannibal Mejbri at United's 2019 pre-season friendly with Kristiansund in Norway. On that trip, the French-born midfielder met Paul Pogba and was sold by the club's long-term vision for him, rejecting offers from Bayern Munich and Barcelona to move to Manchester.

A year later, and United scoured Spain for a trio of top talents. Alvaro Fernandez joined from Real Madrid, Marc Jurado from Barcelona, and Alejandro Garnacho from Atletico Madrid.

Jurado and Garnacho both shone in the Youth Cup win over Nottingham Forest. On the same night, defender Fernandez was named the club's U23 Player of the Year.

In the same summer, United lured Joe Hugill from Sunderland amid rival interest from Arsenal and Tottenham while Charlie McNeill rejoined the club from local rivals Man City. Both captures were evidence of United's rising stock in the youth game; both of the forwards played in the Youth Cup win this week.

If Manchester United's FA Youth Cup victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Wednesday night taught us anything, it was that Alejandro Garnacho has a very exciting future ahead of him.

It is, therefore, clear that Garnacho sees Ronaldo as an idol that he wishes to try and replicate. The Portuguese star is a role model for millions of youngsters across the globe and could leave a lasting impact on the Argentine.

Furthermore, Garnacho, on another post, also outlined his love for the club. Sharing a picture of him lifting the Youth Cup aloft, he said: "I love Manchester United, always."

Considering Ronaldo is now at the age of 37 and Garnacho is only 17, the latter will be looking to follow in the Portuguese star's footsteps in years to come and cement his place as a United first-teamer. He has potential in abundance and his future is attracting a wave of attention.

Alejandro Garnacho is in line for a new contract at Manchester United as a reward for his breakthrough season.

United are now set to reward Garnacho with improved terms, even though he only signed his first professional contract after turning 17 last July.

Former academy stars Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Elanga all got new deals within months of making their first-team debuts, and Garnacho is the next in line.

The teenager, who is expected to be part of United's touring party to Thailand and Australia in July, already has a sponsorship deal with Nike.

Garnacho joined United from Atletico Madrid for £420,000 in 2020, turning down Borussia Dortmund to make the move to Manchester. He has represented Spain at youth level but qualifies for Argentina through his mother.

The mood within the Manchester United dressing room has been described as 'totally flat' going into their final match of the season against Crystal Palace next weekend. And it comes after the players were allegedly left 'annoyed' by Ralf Rangnick's absence from training following their defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League two months ago.

The publication also claims that key members of the team have been confused with the amount of time off Rangnick has granted the players. Following the Champions League last-16 loss to Atletico, the squad were permitted nine out of the following 13 days free.

Rangnick himself jetted off to Barbados during that time, and was not at the training ground on the day the team returned - something which is thought to have left those present 'annoyed'. The German's frank, honest assessments of his side in press conferences is also not thought to have gone down particularly well with some.

The 61-year-old could bring vast experience to Ten Hag's team and offer insight into how the English game works, though most importantly of all might be his ruthless verdict on who is dispensable this summer.

"The disappointing thing for me was, 3-1 with 25 minutes left and the players stopped running," McClaren told talkSPORT of the United side that lost to Man City back in March. "They didn't stop running for the manager, they stopped running for each other. Then you've got problems.

"In adversity, that is when they need to stick together, and they never did. Under that surface, there are big problems in that dressing room, and nobody has solved them. The solution is quite simple; they need a manager who the players will trust and who they will run for and die for them.

"You need to get the bad ones out of the dressing room. This is the key to it, and Roy Keane was spot on. Five or six of them don't deserve to wear the shirt. Get them out of the club and sign players who will run and fight for that shirt."

McClaren had not been successful when he managed English clubs.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates has described Manchester United loanee James Garner as "one of the best" set-piece specialists in the Championship.

In total, Garner, who helped Forest reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup this term, has directly contributed to 14 goals in all competitions, scoring four times and grabbing ten assists. A bulk of his assists have come via set-plays, with his corners often proving devastating.

If he plays for Man Utd next season will he be allowed to take free kicks or corners?
