Man Utd hope Erik ten Hag arrival changes fan attitudes toward team

Manchester United chief executive Richard Arnold says he respects fans' right to protest at Old Trafford but hopes the arrival of new manager Erik ten Hag will see a change in their attitude towards the team.

United are licking their wounds after an abysmal campaign, which Arnold admits fell well below expectations and only saw them finish sixth because West Ham gave away a lead to lose their final game.

Matches at Old Trafford at the end of the season were characterised by noisy protests, with some fans arriving late and others leaving early at specific games to mark 17 years of ownership by the Glazer family.

However, Arnold hopes United have ushered in a new dawn under former Ajax boss Ten Hag, who has signed a three-year contract.

"We understand fans are frustrated and want to see change and improvement," said Arnold at a recent Fans' Forum. "Suffice to say, we are not happy with where we are in terms of performance on the pitch.

"Football is a game of passion and we fully respect fans' right to make their feelings known, as long as this remains legal and peaceful at all times.

"But I would very much hope that all fans within Old Trafford approach next season with renewed optimism and confidence as we look forward to a fresh start under Erik ten Hag."

The Fans' Forum minutes were published on the same day as United released their third-quarter results, which revealed the club's net debt is now £495.7m. A cash dividend of $0.09 per share will be paid on 24 June, which means more funds going out of the club, mainly to members of the Glazer family.

These regular payments, combined with a relative lack of success on the pitch, are a major factor behind the protests.

However, United insiders argue the dividends and what they see as 'low-cost debts' account for a small fraction of revenues and do not stop investment in the team.

Manchester United desperately need to sign a defensive midfielder, and several doors already appear to be closing.

Aurelien Tchouameni appears poised to sign for Real Madrid, with ESPN reporting a deal close to £70 million is in its final stages.

Free agent option Boubacar Kamara has signed with Aston Villa, while The Telegraph report Wolves have made a move to sign Joao Palhinha. Kalvin Phillips is tipped to sign for City, rather than United, by The Mail.

There is another potentially top option for the Red Devils. Manchester United must target Ibrahim Sangare.

Sangare plays for PSV Eindhoven and so is a player Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag knows well, with the Dutch side pushing Ajax all the way in the race for the title.

Opta named Sangare in their Eredivisie team of the season, labelling him the ‘best defensive midfielder’ in the league.

Sangare ranked 1st in the league for tackles won, 1st for duels won, 2nd for ball recoveries, and 3rd for interceptions.

Still only 24, Sangare has great ability and potential to get better, and PSV face a real battle to keep hold of him this summer.

United may need to step that interest up, with The Mirror reporting he is on Chelsea’s list of targets, with PSV valuing him at around £30 million. Voetbal International also claim Liverpool are monitoring him.

There may be another edge Manchester United have if the club enter the race to sign Sangare; he already seems to admire the Red Devils.

Sangare was pictured at a charity tournament in the Ivory Coast last summer, organised by Eric Bailly, wearing a Manchester United kit.

Those quality defensive midfielder available are getting less & less as they joined other clubs. Will not be surprised if Man Utd end up unable to sign any quality defensive midfielder this season.

It is claimed that sources have insisted Lingard and Rashford had ‘no instructions, no game plan, no position plan’ at the Etihad. The source added that ‘they didn’t have a f**king clue what they were doing.’

The MEN added:

‘One player complained Rangnick ‘talked to him like a child’ and ‘did not give a sh*te’ about Rangnick’s advice. Another player was dubbed a ‘teacher’s pet’. One senior player spoke disparagingly of any competitor for his position. Some players found Anthony Elanga’s playing time mind-boggling.’

There’s a feeling within the footballing industry that Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to buy Manchester United from the Glazers, according to reports. The Red Devils have been owned by the Americans since 2005. And, 17 years on, they remain just as maligned as ever.

Ratcliffe recently tried to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich but, in the end, missed out.

Now, the Independent claim industry insiders think Ratcliffe wasn’t bothered at missing out on the Blues ‘at all’.

Instead, it’s said there’s a feeling that the approach was ‘really about broadcasting to the Glazers’ that Ratcliffe is willing and ready to buy United.

Earlier this month, Ratcliffe insisted he wouldn’t try to buy United because they’re not for sale.

Fabrizio Romano has taken to Twitter to provide an update on Jurrien Timber, as Manchester United and Tottenham try to lure him to the Premier League.

Well, the 20-year-old Ajax wonderkid has enjoyed a brilliant campaign in Amsterdam, and as a result, Erik ten Hag could bring him to Old Trafford.

Romano believe the Netherlands international has been discussed “internally” in the last 48 hours, as has Villarreal defender Pau Torres.

The Red Devils are allegedly preparing a £43m bid for the Spain international, who is also wanted by Tottenham.

Jurrien Timber & Pau Torres both wanted by Man Utd & Tottenham. If Tottenham ended up signing these 2 players & Man Utd failed to sign these 2 players what will it show?

Doesn't show anything. As long as Glazer are in charge, what do you expect? Do timber look like a 80M player? Do pau look like a 80M player?

You know who is at fault here? Ajax and Villarreal. If they slam a 80M on the player, we would be super interested.

Manchester United are set to take a disciplined approach in the transfer market this summer.

The Red Devils are in need of a squad overhaul after a miserable season that saw them finish sixth in the Premier League.

With the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, and Edinson Cavani leaving on free transfers, the need for changes is even more apparent.

United will invest when they believe a top target can be acquired, per the Daily Mail.

However, they will also encourage new boss Erik ten Hag to look to the youth team and returning loanees to bolster his first team squad.

United want to ensure they are not repeating previous transfer windows, when exorbitant amounts of cash was spent on players who were barely improvements on the ones already present at the Old Trafford club.

Manchester United have made an ultimatum to Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong is wanted by new United manager Erik ten Hag, having worked with the Holland ace at Ajax.

Barca are prepared to sacrifice De Jong as they seek to boost their finances.

Sport says United are in contact with De Jong's camp and want an answer from him about a move to Old Trafford. If he's keen, United will open talks with Barca about a fee for the player, otherwise they will move onto other targets.

Ten Hag has told De Jong he will build the new team around him and there's plans for over €250m in squad investment.

But he wants a quick answer with so much work to do this summer market.

lolx.
There will be lots of rumor till July..

I trust the club to ...................................... mess up again

LOlx
Most likely will mess up from failure to sign the 1st or 2nd choice players. Then they will have to sign the 3rd or 4th choice players. How to do well if sign 3rd or 4th choice players?

Don't think he is interested in joining Man Utd because there is no CL. He stays with Barcelona can still play in the CL. Ten Hag wants him but the player doesn't want to come.

Best XI of the season

GOALKEEPER

David de Gea
(Manchester United): A contentious choice perhaps against the claims of Alisson of Liverpool and Ederson of Manchester City, but De Gea performed wonders amid the train wreck of United's season. He pulled off some stunning saves and without him, United would not even have qualified for the Europa League.

Worst XI of the season

DEFENDERS

Aaron Wan-Bissaka
(Manchester United): The £50 million right-back lost his way and his place to Diogo Dalot in United's calamitous season.

Harry Maguire (Manchester United): Often excellent for England, he looked a shadow of himself for United. Cruelly and wrongly booed at Wembley, expect him to bounce back. The disappointment of losing the Euro 2020 final and United's struggles undoubtedly hit his confidence.

Raphael Varane (Manchester United): The arrival of one of the most-decorated players in the game today was universally acclaimed as a coup, but his first season at Old Trafford ended with him spending plenty of time out injured and the club conceding more goals than relegated Burnley.

MIDFIELDERS

Paul Pogba
(Manchester United): Almost the "invisible man" at Old Trafford and seemingly on his way out. The obvious talent he displays frequently for France has rarely been seen in a United shirt. Mostly injured

Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United): Seemed to be inhibited by Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival and never looked the same player who starred with goals and assists last season. Cut a frustrated figure. Getting a tune from him a key task for new boss Erik ten Hag.

ATTACKERS

Marcus Rashford
(Manchester United): No apologies for so many United players in this team of "disappointments." Frequently left out, he looked bereft of confidence and belief. Body language spoke volumes. Needs a manager who believes in him again.

Unable to sign the top choices show Man Utd no longer able to compete with the top clubs in signing players. This means it may take Man Utd a longer time to challenge for the top 4 places in the league.
