Ng Eng Hen:
...it's a matter of taste. I can imagine that people from the PLA come here and find this raucous a bit rambunctious. This is the Western liberal mode of many ideas. And from this, you're supposed to gain wisdom and they go back and say it was thoroughly discombobulating. That's entirely understandable

For China it must decide for itself whether the Shangri La Dialogue adds value. There is no coercion for you to attend.

Is it better? To come to an open platform, to subject yourself sometimes to the tyranny of questions and to what might seem a common view from others to explain yourself, or to retreat from that engagement? That is something that China must decide for itself.

i think they prep the scripts beforehand

no one will have such words on their mind as a ready retort

Minister Ng should help to explain to China that this is the way the Western liberal mode of ideas instead of telling China down. After all Singapore is not in the eyes of China a western liberal. Minister Ng is simply not good enough as a politician despite so many years in government.

The world can hab singlish, mudlish, cecalish, indolish and so on

But Chinalish is not so simple. They expect angmoh to accept Chinalish as the standard .

These words are not so bombastic but I wouldn't use them in a conversation. I'm not sure what's Ng's intention in using them, esp. knowing that he's communicating to the Chinese.

Also, it seems like Ng is not answering to the point other than tell the Chinese that they decide for themselves if there is any value. Fillers such as rambunctious vs structured is not to the point.

I think at the point of speaking, he use these words as a smoke bomb to delay the Chinese delegation from immediate questions as they will have to think and ponder over these words first. It is probably only when they return to China that the full accurate translation can come out.
