Have anyone engaged a lawyer to get a grant of probate and can share their experience on duration from start to end and the cost incurred.

It depends on whether there is a Will.

If it doesn’t, then the process will be long and expensive.

If it has a Will, the length will depend on the No of assets too

For a clean cut will, it might take from 2 weeks to a month with a good experience lawyer.

You may consider Ms Ng Puay Joo of Unilegal at 9386 6788.

She helped us expeditiously with our dad assets.

Do u know how long the process will take?
About 3-4months?

but again it all depends, if the deceased has a lot of assets from a lot of different place. Lawyer will need to contact all the different agency to discover the assets

if you want to faster you can provide lawyer with the list of assets (without any discovery) this process is faster. This is assuming you know all the assets of the deceased

p.s not a lawyer, all these from personal experience only. If you want I can PM you the law firm that I contacted (I’m not linked to them or gain commission in anyway just find their service to be fast and efficient )

Iirc there’s a difference between assets of less then $3m or more than $3m. For more than $3m, will be more complex

He already mentioned Probate meaning there is a will.

Not true to say no will the process will be long and expensiive.

Also not true to say a good experienced lawyer will shorten the process. One lawyer I engaged set about applying online immediately with me sitting besides him :s13: Of course, if go to a freshie, the process will be longer with missed steps along the way.

Way back in 2008, I first approached a lawyer for Letter of Administration near my office but she doesn't handle estate matters. She recommended her lawyer friend. Her lawyer friend wanted to charge $3.5k. So I approached my friend for recommendation. His lawyer who is his company lawyer quoted me $5k on a friendly basis :s13:

Disappointed I searched the net and got one for $2.5k for LOA. Overall happy with the engagement although the case dragged for 6 months as I was in no hurry at all. In fact I looked for lawyer about 6 months after death took place.

Years later, in 2020 I went back to him for Probate as other lawyers were not willing to accept my case for higher fee than what they quoted in the net.

Our case done in 2 weeks for about $2k

The law firm that drafted the will quoted more than $10k taking into consideration of the total value of assets.

It was a clean cut estate:
A bank ac, a house n a share. Will is clear with no ambiguity.

The process not only depends on the lawyer. Short if lucky and also there is no complication and the court happens to be free.

$10k for a will with a bank account, a house and a share is real carrot for the lawyer drafting the will. Clear and no ambiguity can also DIY like my last two cases of identical wills for a mother and son where estate consisted of a jointly held hdb flat with any other assets to cover assets not listed.

I engaged a supposed experience lawyer, but it has been dragging since June.

The will is simple & straight forward with just 1 bank account and insurance.

Engaged the firm in June, confirmed assets in mid July, oath for administration in mid/end July till now no sound.

Sometimes delay is due to the Court and timing of submission of application. Prepare to accept 2 months from date of online application for simple case. 6 weeks appear normal. After that, either suck thumb or bang table of the Court or lawyer :s13:

I had done LOA and it took about a year. Was about 20 years back. Law firm is one that advertises frequently.

Lawyer insisted on writing to a spate of government bodies and banks for discovery process. I have to tell him not necessary to certain organisations as I show him relevant documents. He only stopped when I asserted myself as every letter he writes will add to cost.

At the end was charged around $3.5K. When I demanded taxation of cost, his senior stepped in and offered almost $1K discount.

Not sure I understand this correctly, the Probat is not to withdraw the asset from decrease but a lawful document so that the trustee (from the Will) can excecutive the Will accordingly. Be it go to the bank/finance institutions...etc Why is that related to the nos of assets held by the decease?

Withdrawing assets owned by the decease should be a separate process right? That said you can have one lawyer to apply the Probate then the other lawyer to help to withdraw the assets? Am I understand this correctly?
