Looking to get some opinions from experts here.

Currently i am on Starhub 1gb fibre bb and fibre tv(old samsung black set-top box) and using the Linksys EA8100 router issued by them back when i signed up for the plan. I am thinking of changing to a Wifi 6 capable router and saw many M1 issued TP-Link AX72 being dumped on carousell for below $100.

I am living in a 3 room flat and mainly use WIFI with no more than 5-6 devices connected at once so i don't really need a router that is too fancy or powerful. Might consider jumping ship to simba 2.5gb broadband when they launch so i feel the TP-Link AX72 suits my current and future needs nicely. I am assuming those M1 issued TP-Link AX72 should not have issues working on starhub fibre bb but is there a need for me to call up starhub and inform them about the router change? Any other recommended alternatives to the AX72 at around $150?

If you intend to use SIMBA plan which is a 2.5Gbps plan, TP-Link Archer AX72 is not really suitable since it does not have 2.5Gbps WAN port. And you will have isues sticking to your old Fibre TV box as Starhub will charge Fibre Link Access fee if you do not use Starhub Fibre broadband.

But it will work with Starhub without any issues. You do not need to call Starhub. It will work fine. Just turn off the Starhub ONT and the EA8100, remove the EA8100, plug in the Archer AX72, power on the Starhub ONT and the AX72.

Thanks for the info regarding the access fee. If i am to switch to simba i would likely also cancel my fibre tv plan so i will be done with starhub. I am a noob when it comes to networking stuff so lets say if i use the AX72 with a 2.5gb plan, the max achievable wifi speed would still be capped at 1000mbps right? There seems to be AX72 pro model that has 2.5gb wan port but that one costs around $300.

Yes, if you use AX72, then the wired speed will be capped at 1Gbps and wifi speed will be even lower, more like 700-800Mbps at near range.

If you use 2.5Gbps WAN capable router, you may able to hit above 1Gbps using Wifi with typical Intel AX wireless adapter, say 1.2Gbps.

Recently changed mobo on PC and now can support up to WIFI 6e thats why considering switch to wifi 6 router. Currently with my PC connect to 5ghz band wifi, speedtest results hover between 550-580mbps. I am assuming by changing to wifi 6 router i will probably get closer to the capped out 1gb speeds.
wireless not possible to hit 1gbps, unless LAN then can get 900+.
you get a good ac router can also hit 800mbps+ no prob.
Even if magically you get 1gbps on wifi6 (which i seriously doubt), can you really experience the diff between 550mbps vs 1gbps? Do you know 4k streams only consume 10-20mbps ?

Can la, you everyday sit there press speedtest to prove there is improvement lor. LOLx

Again the upside is really marginal for normal casual user. But its your money your choice.

Who said anything about streaming? I do alot of heavy downloading so yes, for me the difference between my current download speeds of 550mbps or potentially 800+ mbps is not "marginal". You said it yourself, my money my choice so if i have the equipment and broadband plan to support it so why not fully utilize it? Also this is forum for people to seek help or opinions. You don't have to feel compelled to reply if you need to mock or condescend while dispensing your "wisdom". You made your point and i thank you for nothing.

the linksys is capable of 4 stream 5ghz AC, the tp link is 4 stream 5ghz AX
So I'm guessing your mobo PC wifi is only capable of 2 stream.

you'll probably get around 700mbps with wifi 6 5ghz until you switch to a 6e/6ghz capable router.

My Starhub 500Mbps plan is not under contract for quite some time already, but I would stick to Starhub 500Mbps and not use SIMBA any time soon. I will let the first batch of subscribers test first. :)
I can't switch back to 500Mbps from 1Gb :(

How much is your 500Mbps?

Think he meant that he is used to the 1Gbps speed. He cannot stand going back to 500Mbps.

There should be no change of policy. S$30 plus GST (now S$32.40) for downgrade, as per Clause 14.12 of the Starhub Service Specific Term and Conditions.

Modification Fee: $32.40 per downgrade of speed

i see. Maybe I misunderstood the original statement "can't switch back to 500Mbps from 1Gb"

Used to be S$29.90 per month, now it is S$30.18 per month.

I see, let me check with Starhub.

Actually I was on the old cable 100Mbps then 200Mbps with no issue until cable got terminated.

500Mbps is more than enough for my family but I think a CSO told me phasing out 500Mbps in time go upgraded to 1Gbps.

Plan expire next week but SIMBA launch still so far away, guess need to recontract 2 years with them :(.

Usually no need to recontract in general. Check your contract.

I am out of contract since a few year ago. Starhub will usually charge the same price after contract expires. For 500Mbps plan, used to be S$29.90 per month, now it is S$30.18 per month due to GST increase (S$29.90 / 1.07 x 1.08 = S$30.18).

Hmm, that's odd cos I forgot to renew my plan once or twice (can't really remember) and got a bill shock the following month.

This is true for me too, where I had both BB and Fibre TV.
Currently paying around $85.00 for BB and Fibre TV, which will expire on 18/04.
Looks like there are new promotions available with Starhub and they are also pushing me towards TV+, with bundled fee of $99.00. No real incentive to stay.

Planning to switch to M1 for BB ($35.24) and just retain TV+ with starhub ($46.32) makes economical sense.

Went ahead and switch out my router from the Linksys EA8100 to TP-Link AX72.

Now with wifi6, speedtest result on my PC

Router in living room to PC in bedroom separated by one concrete wall. Very happy with the "marginal" jump in speed and i didnt even have to break the bank. Got the AX72 bnib for $80 on carousell.

What was the speed previously on Linksys EA8100? Curious to know how much is the improvement.

The best is call up Starhub CSO to find out for those contract expiring soon. My 1Gbps I am paying $24.49/mth during the 24 months contract and was told by their CSO if not renewing any contract, the price will be $40+/mth.
