Giving an update + seeking reco again

The update:
So I called ST and they offered me 1Gbps and 2Gbps plans that were $50++. Definitely wasn't what I was hoping for. But I ended the call without negotiating as I sensed that the agent probably won't be helpful with that.

So I asked again via WA, and thankfully they offered something closer to what I was paying before.

I went with 1Gbps, and got an RT5703W Askey router from them. Plugged in and everything seemed to work fine.

The issue:
That is, until I tested a huge Gb download (not BT btw). Before, even on my Singtel AC Plus, I could hit mb/s speeds, and could finish downloads within hours or max half a day. But now, I'm seeing only 20-40kb/s, so estimate about 14 days to complete the download.

I've experimented switching to my Halo extender (in my room), putting my laptop next to the router (but not via Ethernet), but they all yield the same speeds.

And then when I had to download my outdated browser client, the 300mb installer file got downloaded instantly, like I literally blinked and it was done. So it seems my speed should be good.

Questions:
  1. Any clue why my large file download is affected? I did wonder if it's the ISP's throttling, but then I could hit satisfactory speeds on huge downloads before, so that can't be it, right?
  2. Before I totally give up on the stock router, is there some kind of network settings I can look into that might resolve the problem?
  3. Otherwise, if I were to ditch the router, besides the Archer AX72U, what other routers would fit my use case well, with a budget of <$250?

TIA again.

Edit: I'm seeing 10+mb/s now, a few hours after my initial observations. ✌️
But still curious about my questions.

It is good to go with Singtel 1Gbps and NOT 2Gbps/2.5Gbps plan.

As for your question 1 and 2, I have no idea. It could be a temporary server issue.

For the Singtel issued stock router, I can only say that they are not good in general. On the other hand, any new ones should still be better than Singtel AC Plus. So you may have to monitor to see how it goes.

If you want to change the Askey RT5703W to a better one like TP-Link Archer AX72 (low cost, at around S$80 BNIB from Carousell) or even better ones like Asus TUF-AX4200 and TUF-AX6000, just go ahead.

If you do not mind no warranty, China version of Asus TX-AX6000 is very cost effective if you buy from Taobao. It is the counterpart of TUF-AX6000. It has English FW (just need to change language from Chinese to English).

As always, thanks for sharing your knowledge, xiaofan. 🙏

Got it. Will monitor and see if I should got for an alternative router.

Forget to share this previously. I think this list of public iperf3 servers can be pretty useful for some diagnostics.

Nice. Somehow Singtel IPv6 will get worse results, the following are done using IPv4.

1. Working, faster download, slower upload.

Bash:

Using -P4.

1) This one can saturate my 1Gbps Singtel Fibre for upload, not for download.

Singtel goes to HK and then goes to this speedtest.sin1.sg.leaseweb.net server
Singtel just have to peer at local internet exchanges like what the cloud/content companies are doing, but alas, that's incompatible with their business model. :p

Could you recommend the best budget internet service provider? Currently, I'm on the ViewQwest 1Gb plan, but my contract has expired, and I'm paying $35 per month. Should I stick with ViewQwest? Looking for something budget or valuable.

Since I work from home, internet stability is crucial for me. While I don't prioritize performance as I don't play online games, smooth 4k video streaming would be appreciated.

Additionally, I'm considering upgrading my router. Currently, I'm using the Asus AC68U (Merlin). Would it significantly improve speed and latency? I have approximately 25 devices connected at home, including IP cameras, TVs, and mobile gadgets.

1) For existing users of any ISPs: no switching of ISP unless if you got issues or you got very good offers from the other ISPs.

If VQ is stable for you, then why change?

As for your RT-AC68U, if you feel it is a bit old, you can upgrade to a better one, for example, if budget allows, Asus RT-AX86U Pro will be a good one (retail price is at S$429 from Challenger or other places). You can also go with GT-AX6000 (around S$400 to S$450 BNIB from Carousell) and it is even better than RT-AX86U Pro. Both support Merlin FW as well.

The VQ service has been mostly okay, though there have been a few downtimes in the last couple of years.

Now, about the router, I'm thinking if sticking with our current internet plan but getting a better router would speed things up or reduce delays. My wife feels our 1Gbps plan isn't as fast as she hoped, but it's not terribly slow either. I've explained that sometimes things take a bit longer to load due to server issues when she's streaming Chinese dramas.

Our router is WIFI5, so I'm not sure if upgrading to WIFI6 would really make a difference. Is our current setup good enough, or would changing the router actually improve things? If it make no significant different, then I might just stick with current AC68U.

If you have WiFi 6 devices, then the improvement will be significant. It is not expensive to upgrade your desktop or Laptop to WiFI 6 either.

I see. Then I will take your advise to upgrade to either of the router you mentioned earlier. My phone and my working laptop that heavily using all WIFI6 support.

Hi, new to this thread. just want to ask if anyone has any issues with MR similar to mine. currently on the MR 1gbps GAMER plan. recently having issues with network going down randomly throughout the day. have tried resetting my own router firmware but i suspect its the MR ONT. I have tried contacting MR but they just said they cant do anything unless the ONT is actually the problem. the problems are fine once i power cycle the ONT but that shouldn't be a long term solution

You may not get much help help in this thread. It is better you post to the MR thread instead.
