The Google as the OEM of pixel devices and the Google as the maintainer of Android OS and it's suite of apps and services are inherently conflicted.

The problem is how they market their substandard pixel hardwares (read tensor) with pixel exclusive features then a few months down the line, suddenly said features can be run by every mother son device via simple software/app integration to run backend on their servers.

Just annoying la.

It's like suggesting that a Toyota (Pixel 6/7/8), with a Ferrari engine (Tensor), is both fuel-efficient (which is not) and capable of 'exclusive' AI self-driving. however, some AI features don't work (Pixel 8), while other brands will get them. there's been a u-turn on the decision, and now these exclusive features will be available to all other brands with capable h/w. so, Tensor is a lie

Then, can I ask a quick question. Would you still have bought a Pixel 8 if they had announced at the launch that all these features would come to eligible Android phones eventually ( no time frame given) ?

Clearly, you don't know about my love-hate relationship with G-spot

I assume that's a yes. And if that's the case, it wouldn't matter because you would have bought it nonetheless. Just like Apple users who complain there's nothing new with the new iPhone and proceeds to buy it anyway.

I would have skipped the pixel 8 pro if I knew how much they lied about the capabilities of the tensor G3.

Personally I'm happy Android OS and Google apps got better as a whole. But this is clearly a case of fraudulent marketing.

Fair enough, if you specifically bought the phone thinking these ai features were exclusive to Pixel and that didn't turn out to be true.

My needs are much simpler. Does the UI have minimal bloatware, does it have a good camera and can the battery last a whole day for my usage ? Of course, the basic stuff like the screen and speaker too.

All the AI stuff is just bonus to me, besides with Google's track record of killing apps, best not place too much trust in anything that's software.

No leh my needs are also quite simple.

But as it is my experiences are:
1. Scrolling is jittery
2. Camera processing is slow and laggy especially for photo burst(not the feature which was removed)
3. Battery does not come close to lasting a whole day for my usage, usually need to charge twice a day.
4. Bugs in the UI almost daily.
5. Lots of geo locked features.
6. Reception can be iffy compared with snapdragon phones.

If Singtel never do us the $400 off during preorder I think I won't even consider changing from my S23U.

The MSRP is a joke for subpar tensor G3.

What is this photo burst? Does Pixel 8 Pro have photo burst..?

Actually, of the six issues you mentioned, majority of them is not due to the Tensor G3 chip itself right?

To be very honest, even the latest iPhone 15 Pro has some software bugs that I have to deal with quite frequently on a day-to-day basis. Safari hanging, camera showing a black screen when opening camera from the lock screen....

Photo burst is when you take many pictures consecutively without pause. Used to have the function to hold on to your shutter button and it will take 5-6 pictures a second consecutively.

1-3 & 6 are definitely due to the chip set being exynos based.

And....that's why I never buy at launch. I see no need to be "First". And IMO no smartphone is truly worth more than 1K in my opinion. A flagship for normal user should be at most 700-800 only. Both P7 and P7 pro also problematic after launch but mostly ironed out by the time I purchased. No major issues and cheaper price to boot.

I’ve always been a launch day person for iPhones. Never experienced any of the above mentioned bugs for iPhone and my Pixel. How you all use sia

There's always a small minority of power users that will always have issues regardless Pixel or iPhone users. I will always wait a few weeks or months after launch and then decide whether to buy depending on the price

I missed the native photo burst feature that was replaced by the stupid short video thingy, and at low resolution no less.

Google reportedly will be fixing the scrolling issue in Android 15, so it may not be a hardware problem.

But yes, like limmk, I have a love-hate relationship with Pixel phones, and unfortunately, there isn't any other phone in the market that interests me. Nothing phone is the only other phone where I can tolerate the UI, but the phone's chip is two-generation old and I'm not sure if the camera can beat Pixel.

from the various youtube videos I have seen, nothing's camera quality is sort of like oneplus. Sometime as good as Pixel but very often hit & miss. What makes Pixel work for me, other than the fact I personally like the color science, is that it is quite consistent and high success rate. Pixel videos on the other hand, still need work to catch up to iPhone.

The one thing that interest me is this Boost mode for night scene videos, looks waaaaay better than the s**tty noisy night scene videos with my Pixel 7 Pro.

But it requires uploading to G cloud for processing and ? upscaling.

Anyone tried ?

If you are serious about the video quality, my recommendation would be to buy a phone gimbal or DJI Pocket 3 instead.
