I think greedy businessmen who has no ideas on how to make real money la. Singapore has already progressed to first world country and we still do 3rd world country business practise.
Oh I can promise you Singtel is making plenty of money charging for SIM and eSIM replacements.
Only a silly businessman would remove a 100% profitable charge that customers just pay and forget about it. Not like there's a Xingtel that offers an identical product sans the replacement charge. In the absence of competition, why handicap your own profits.

To be honest, that is why our telco performance is like ****. Many ppl think short term. They didn’t think what value are they creating for customers. If today our telco take over Google, next moment you see them charge for refreshing every page and type every character. No new idea means no idea la. Talk till got tiger and dragon say simi sure win 100%.

Latest iPads announced only come with eSIMs, even the ones to be sold in China. Seems like iPhone 16 is going to have a lot more countries get eSIM-only iPhones, wonder if Singapore will be one of those

I really hope they retain at least one physical SIM card slot for the iPhone 16.

Some major telcos don't offer free transfer of eSIM from old to new devices. I read elsewhere that Singtel is charging customers $10 to re-issue eSIMs, while their sister brand GOMO offers unlimited eSIMs.

The last time my iPhone crashed (due to hardware issues), Apple replaced my device. However, the eSIM is stored on the device's eSIM chip, and iTunes/iCloud backup is able to back up or restore the eSIM. Luckily, my MVNO offers a second eSIM for free. If this happens for the third time, I might need to port out to another telco for another free eSIM.

It might for the next iteration, but believe subsequently will slowly all transition to eSIM.
Then they can do away with SIM card module and have space for other components.

If Apple chooses to go fully with eSIM, it's something beyond our control. We may need to find workarounds or pay for the re-issue of eSIMs for each handset upgrade or replacement. The issue lies in the fact that while eSIMs were designed to make life easier, complicate matters when it comes to moving SIMs between devices (especially if you have more than one) or during a replacement or upgrade.

Its not on Apple but on SG telcos that want to nickle and dime customers.
The tech is convenient and good, but the application by the telcos is the one hindering such convenience and making users pay for this convenience.

Yes i know not apple fault, it's understandable that managing the cost of re-issuing eSIMs can be a challenge for telcos. However, the high cost for some telcos to re-issue the SIM card can be prohibitive for users. It's important for telcos to find a balance between managing their costs and providing reasonable fees for services like eSIM re-issuing.

Nothing to do with USA, plenty of telcos support eSIM Quick Transfer globally including Maxis just across the causeway.

if this is actually supported by carriers in singapore we would’ve reaped the true benefits of esim: no worries if theft of phone (cannot remove physical sim), easily switch phone as though it’s physical sim etc

You already can get benefit 1 by switching to eSIM today with almost all telcos. And if you lost your phone, there's no switching anything cause the original phone is already lost. The only downside is the fee payment to get another eSIM, which is a minor one albeit penny pinching on the telco's part.

The eSIM Quick Transfer only works for iPhone to iPhone or Android to Android for now and support for it is also very limited across different manufacturers and telcos in Android land.
