This is a good video about many things in life. Finances. Expectations. Self awareness.

Good watch

IGNORE THE TITLE of the video. It's not what you think it's about.

"Expectations are the thief of happiness"

my life and career didn't turn out as i planned and expected, but looking back, i am happier now than if it had turned out as planned.

Not exactly true.
Depends what your expectations are.
Happiness is when you have met your expectations or exceeded them.
Only you will know truly what your real expectations are.

That's good. One key is to be true to yourself. Be able to tell yourself you are good enough. Life is good enough.

in the context of sg, most will articulate those where expectations failed to hit/exceed, so kpkb.
often, while on the way, many will revise the expectations upwards, often to unrealisic/unattainable levels, then feel disappointed.

a sense of realism is also important, but seldom highlighted.

to me, its important to know what is truely important and what are criteria/expectations imposed by others (family, culture etc), then set expectations/goals accordingly.
the beauty of age and experience is we (hopefully) know ourselves better, and can revise expectations accordingly

2 hours video? Got a summary?
It's broken into chapters. So you can see which chapter titles are relevant to you. Quite broad ranging.

but the idea is comparing is a problem.

Chasing more is not the path to happiness. Managing expectations. being realistic. Knowing self. Challenging self rather than compare with others.

Many years ago I had a financial planner work out for me what age I wanted to retire. The lifestyle I wanted. $5k a month. And worked out how much I needed at a certain age to retire.

That was sort of my benchmark. And I doubled that to be safe as a goal for myself.

Need money, I can manage my own expectation, but I can’t manage all the jiao lang at work, and I’m also pretty sure I’ll be happier not working

I think one of the most fundamental criteria for one to be happy is they cannot be in a job that they hate. Saw a lot of unhappy people is because they dread going to work everyday, weekend or holiday also cannot relax because keep thinking of work :o

Sounds to me more like it's not work. It's having to deal with people and their expectations etc.

If you could do work that doesn't have to deal with people you won't feel so negative? I know it's easier said than done to find work that involves no people.
