Driving EV car in Malaysia

Hi all,

I am considering buying an EV car. Typically the range is 300-400km and unlikely to reach KL with 30%^ charge left. Hence, may need to charge along the way between SG and KL, somewhere mid point.

Hence, how are the charging infra/apps like in West Malaysia? I like to drive from SG to Penang and back for holidays.

So, questions:
(1) Are there enough charging points along NS highway all the way to Penang? Mainly normal or high speed charge?
(2) Are the apps accurate, like will tell is charging points is occupied, broken down, and speed(normal or high speed charge)

Use PlugShare to find the chargers. Also download the relevant Malaysia charging apps like JomCharge, ChargeSini, ahead of time.

You can use the EV until below 30%. It's not a must to always remain above 30% even when reaching your destination.

Malacca have some chargers you can use midway on your journey. Even the R&R like Pagoh and Ayer Keroh have a DC charger if I recall correctly.

do you like to stop at their R&Rs... snack, lim kopi...

if so, then can stop and charge...

my way is stop, 10mins toilet break and continue again. I cannot deal with the charging stops.

my petrol tank full tank 750km so I am very hesitant to change to a 300 - 400km range EV and still do road trips.

if no road trips but purely SG, i will change to EV in a heartbeat.

Plugshare only tells you where the chargers are and if they are AC or DC. The info is crowd sourced.

To know their status you need to download the charger’s own app.

New EV has AC board for 22kwh quick charging. And malaysia has many such stations too. i believe travel up to KL is not an issue except of exploring their east coast line.

For NSHY charging, just focus on DC fast charger.AC is too slow for highway transition charging.

JB TO KL zone,
There is no worry on this zone. Tons of DC fast chargers available.
Suggest to have 1 short and long top up

KL to mid Perak zone.
Only a few chargers spots up to Ipoh, suggest to plan for 200Km top up, that is Ipoh/ Sungai Perak .

NORTH Perak to Penang.
Charge at Penang.

Not all chargers are available within the NSHY .. take note on the.
The plug share app is very informative.

I am not sure on chargers real time status. Usually within the supported app , it does provide available/ not available status.

Indeed it is very taxing to drive and search at the same time.
A better strategy would be to charge whenever available than wait till last drop of battery.
