Right, and fortunately Eight supports three roaming partners in Malaysia — including the Malaysian carriers' shared 5G network even if you're on a 4G plan in Singapore. That's really quite excellent!
Your phone won't necessarily automatically pick the best roaming network. Generally mobile phones try to stick with a specific roaming partner once they pick one. That may not necessarily be the best decision in every place you go. You can override your phone's automatic choice by manually selecting a roaming partner network, and then you can further choose the "G" level on most phones.
i am using eight in bolehland all the time, i can say in most cases, one does not need to manually select these partners in order to have mobile data access, most of the time, like u said, it will auto select the best partners that can be connected at that time.
so far my experience is that it will auto select one of them (maxis 4G/5G, u mobile 4G, celcomdigi 4G) when u step in to bolehland and once u are connected to any one of them, it sticks to it (almost no switch) unless u step into lion city again, but due to this, sometime the partner u connected to may have blindspot which u have strong mobile signal but no mobile data, then only u need to manually select other partner to have mobile data access again or u step out from the blindspot, the mobile data may come back again.
personally experience - 95% of time i do not need to do manual selection, so to be fair, it is not too bad.
only 5% rare occasion need to do so. so far at mid-valley southkey the connection is also quite decent, there were cases when i was there, as mentioned, with strong mobile signal but no mobile data at all, need to step out of the area in order to have mobile data again. but i suspect it was due to the congestion instead. there are too many ppl shopping there, which the bandwidth might have used up by all ppl thus no data also.
