Right, and fortunately Eight supports three roaming partners in Malaysia — including the Malaysian carriers' shared 5G network even if you're on a 4G plan in Singapore. That's really quite excellent!

Your phone won't necessarily automatically pick the best roaming network. Generally mobile phones try to stick with a specific roaming partner once they pick one. That may not necessarily be the best decision in every place you go. You can override your phone's automatic choice by manually selecting a roaming partner network, and then you can further choose the "G" level on most phones.

i am using eight in bolehland all the time, i can say in most cases, one does not need to manually select these partners in order to have mobile data access, most of the time, like u said, it will auto select the best partners that can be connected at that time.

so far my experience is that it will auto select one of them (maxis 4G/5G, u mobile 4G, celcomdigi 4G) when u step in to bolehland and once u are connected to any one of them, it sticks to it (almost no switch) unless u step into lion city again, but due to this, sometime the partner u connected to may have blindspot which u have strong mobile signal but no mobile data, then only u need to manually select other partner to have mobile data access again or u step out from the blindspot, the mobile data may come back again.

personally experience - 95% of time i do not need to do manual selection, so to be fair, it is not too bad.
only 5% rare occasion need to do so. so far at mid-valley southkey the connection is also quite decent, there were cases when i was there, as mentioned, with strong mobile signal but no mobile data at all, need to step out of the area in order to have mobile data again. but i suspect it was due to the congestion instead. there are too many ppl shopping there, which the bandwidth might have used up by all ppl thus no data also.

To use a 4G (or 5G) modem for "roaming", change IMEI as a mobile phone is necessary otherwise no internet connection. Some partners have no such requirement though.

Unfortunately, there is no log data in the 4G modem router; below is from my phone speed test.
50/50, Maxis or U mobile as roaming partners of Eight.

what are you showing ip address for

the person was asking for the roaming partner which is it maxis, celcomdigi, u mobile
For Eight, it is either Maxis or U Mobile but my 4G router do not display this info. Above info got from mobile phone which connected to modem by wifi. I may have to take out the SIM and put it in phone but that is trouble some on the road. in the car. the other will be easy like Simba is CelcomDigi, which is in my phone and maxis will be maxis and the other phone CelcomDigi will be CelcomDigi. haha!!

eight has maxis (4G/5G), u mobile (4G) and also celcomdig (4G) as roaming partners, not two only.

Thanks for the advice bro. I switched to Digicelcom, so far so good at Aeon Tebrau, Toppen, Mount Austin, Johor Jaya area. Will report here if I ever face E.

so far among all the roaming partners, surely celcomdigi is considered the one with the highest coverage and more consistent speed already.

celcom has the longest history as telco in bolehland and its coverage for rural area is also the best.

Just came back from JB and wished I read this thread earlier. Phone was connected to MAXIS all the way. Friend’s starhub 4G was doing 80 Mbps, my eight was doing intermittent 800kb. Really damn dulan. Everything load damn slow even when got signal, it’s like kena throttled to bare minimum.

manually set to celcomdigi (4G), likely u will have better experience.

so far in bolehland, most of the time, my eight line is connected to celcomdigi (4G) automatically on my iphone while rare occasion, it is connected to maxis or u mobile.

same, i alternate between celcomdigi and u mobile as maxis seems overloaded sometimes until speed is slow.
