I always disabled Google play updates and cloud backups on my family and my phones whenever going overseas
Disable over cellular, I think you mean — which you can do whether or not you’re roaming. Updates and backups are still important. Updating and backing up over Wi-Fi should be fine with the possible exception of airplane-based paid and limited Wi-Fi.

Anyone who sign for the portin with QR?
If I sign up for eSIM for portin am I suppose to get a QR? When is the QR sent? My line is cut already but still no QR and now I am stuck without a line.

Until today, this issue is still happening. Some customers don’t receive the eSIM QR code email it happened to me before as well.

The worst part is when the port-in gets triggered over the weekend, and you’re forced to rush down to the service center just to get the QR code.

If you’re doing a port-in with Eight, I strongly suggest going down to their service center to request your QR code directly. Don’t keep waiting if you’ve already checked your junk/spam mail and confirmed there’s no email from them.

Tough luck now because I did it Friday morning and today there is no service center open and no QR email which means no line over the weekend.

AFAIK it's never been allowed.
Despite what is stated on their site, earlier they allowed eSIM replacement via email, at first no validation was required other than some verification questions. Later after the giga issue, they still allowed it but would call the subscriber to validate the request before sending the new eSIM.

My $18 plan renews on 4th march, intend to downgrade to the $14 one.

When should I do this, right before renewal or does it have some processing time?

How do I downgrade my plan?

Downgrades take effect at the next renewal cycle.
  • Log in to your eight account > Biling > Your next plan on auto renew: change to a lower tiered plan
  • Or visit any eight retailer
Your current plan will continue until the end of its 30-day cycle, after which the downgraded plan will begin. All plans are non-reversible and non-refundable.
