there are a few builds to reference on which is a good start and there is a PR for adding openwrt support to the device. but as my normal habit, I always ends up as doing a custom build with custom patches off the mainline tree.
How's your Quantum W1700K doing? Any OpenWrt results yet?

Working well as a AP. Already positioned one unit as the household's primary wifi.
Anything in particular you are interested in?
Good news!

Initial installation still requires physically "attacking" the unit, correct? Not that it can't be done, but that's something prospective buyers should keep in mind since it requires some tools and a bit of technical acumen.

How's the wireless range as far as you can tell?

This is not for 95% of the audience here. opening up the box to access the serial console is just the first step.
Wireless range wise....... it's openwrt and you are building your own build. So read between the lines :D
I will say this thou.. the hardware is very very well engineered.

ps. the two units i have will probably last me past 2030. good HW and the soc and wifi chipset are both getting support upstream.

OpenWRT project has the following packages for ad blocking
https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/services/ad-blocking

1. Adblock
2. Adblock-Fast
3. Adguard Home
4. Adguard Lean (no official package yet).

You can of course use Pi-hole or standalone Adguard Home installation.

I was using Pi-hole LxC container with OpenWRT for quite a while, then I switched to Adguard Home LxC container. But later I become lazy and just use Adblock-Fast package.

Is it possible to flash openwrt onto Nokia Beacon 1?
Because I tried to google. but was unable to find installation instructions for Nokia Beacon 1.
Can do that easily for Linksys EA8100

The OpenWrt community has released Version 25.12.0, the first release in the new 25.12 series. Here are some highlights:
  • OpenWrt has switched from opkg to apk (Alpine Package Keeper) for package management. This change will help make software package management more reliable and better supported for the long term.
  • A better, easier OpenWrt version upgrade tool is installed by default.
  • Many more devices are supported including Qualcomm ipq50xx and ipq60xx series devices — over 180 new devices in total.
Security updates for OpenWrt 24.10.x will end in September, 2026 — about 6 months from now. It's a good idea to upgrade to OpenWrt 25.12.x as soon as you reasonably can so that you beat that deadline. Please refer to the upgrade installation documentation for help.

The overlapping period between OpenWRT 25.12.0 release date and the EOL date of OpenWRT 24.10.x is a bit short.

Anyway, I will update when 25.12.1 or 25.12.2 got released. Usually I will not jump on the first .0 release.

The OpenWrt community has released Versions 25.12.1 and 24.10.6. These updates include a couple high severity security fixes, so it's a good idea to upgrade as soon as you reasonably can. If you're still running the 24.10.x branch, try to upgrade to 25.12.1 now. The OpenWrt community will stop updating the 24.10.x branch later this year (2026).

Version 25.12.1 also includes some fixes for the recently supported TP-Link Archer BE450, a dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router sold in Singapore — and one of the very few Wi-Fi 7 routers that OpenWrt currently supports. You can probably find the BE450 for under S$200 on Carousell. Or if you want a local TP-Link warranty you can find it for S$220 on Shopee (price check at this moment). Or you might get one "free" with your Internet service plan. The BE450 has one 10GBASE-T WAN port, one 2.5GBASE-T LAN port, and three 1000BASE-T LAN ports. It also has one USB 3.0 (Type A) port. It has 128MB of onboard flash and 512MB of RAM.

Another good info about a high end 10G capable OpenWRT based WiFi 7 router.

The Turris Omnia NG Wi-Fi 7 router is now shipping, and it's a beast. Here are its basic specifications:
  • 4 core 64 bit ARM processor (2.2 GHz)
  • 2GB RAM
  • two SFP+ ports (10 Gb/s)
  • four 2.5GBASE-T ports
  • tri-band Wi-Fi 7
  • 8GB eMMC internal storage
  • M.2 slot for optional additional storage
  • M.2 slot for an optional 5G modem
  • front panel color display
  • programmable RGB LEDs
  • up to 8 antennas
  • two USB 3.0 (Type A) ports
  • battery backup for the onboard clock
  • can be rack mounted
  • runs Turris OS, a fork of OpenWrt, with updates "for life" (should also eventually support mainline OpenWrt)
It's priced as you might expect: about 459 euro (about S$681 at the current exchange rate), plus shipping, 9% import duty, and any options (such as SFP+ modules for 10GBASE-T). I don't think Turris has any local distributors yet.

This Turrius Omnia was liked by the OpenWRT community.
https://openwrt.org/toh/turris/turris_omnia

Nice to see a new one with tirband WiFi 7 support.

As I read more, apparently the Wi-Fi 7 modules in the Omnia NG are installed in slots to allow a possible future upgrade to Wi-Fi 8. 👍

Yes, there are alternatives. The "Banana Pi" products are also contenders. But I think it's easy to argue why the Omnia NG is a good value and good fit for some use cases. The Turris hardware is pretty terrific, including the build quality. Power consumption is likely to be lower than a mini PC. And you're buying very long-term software support and a defensive security service (a distributed dynamic firewall called Turris Sentinel) with their product. The RTC battery backup is also nice for certain security use cases.

Turris designs and manufactures their products in the Czech Republic, and the company is actually part of the Czech Network Information Center (CZ.NIC). Some people might appreciate those aspects.

I think they're basically trying to answer the question "What does a fuss-free, 'forever' Wi-Fi router look like?" I can see their point.

If you're anxious to get an OpenWrt-supported Wi-Fi 7 router, the ASUS ZenWiFi BT8 is also community supported. That's a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router with one 2.5GBASE-T WAN port, one 2.5GBASE-T LAN port, and two 1000BASE-T ports. It also has a Type A USB 3.0 port, 128MB of onboard flash, and 1GB of RAM. It seems like they're sold in pairs in Singapore for about S$570 (about S$285 per unit), maybe a bit less if you catch a promotion or coupon.
