Haven't been on this thread for a while... hope everyone is still interested in knives. Manage to score a few new ones last few months. Following are on the way to SG.

- Kershaw JYDII
- Kershaw JYDII Titanium SG2
- Spyderco Ocelot

With any luck I'd also have the following knives in by the end of the month...

- Spyderco Lum Chinese Folder
- Spyderco Lava
- Spyderco Millitary Orange

Spyderco has been coming out with a lot of new knives last 1 month and they're bleeding my wallet dry. For those who have seen the Spyderco Tenacious the smaller version (2/3 the size) should hit the stores at the end of the month. Same steel, G10 handles and linerlock. MSRP is USD50 but I expect it to be available online for around USD30-35. Very good deal.

Latest version of the Manix with ball bearing lock has hit the stores too. The Manix 2 is priced at USD85 but is an almost new knife compared to the earlier ones. No S30V... Steel has been replaced with 154CM (not too shabby) with a hollow grind. I'd prefer if they kept it to FFG like the original. I'd have snapped up a few if they did. The next version will be FFG and bigger than the original Manix which is crazy as it is already a monster of a folder.

The SageII is out too... and all I can say is... Titanium Framelock! Wish Benchmade would get their act together. This year's offerings are very disappointing. The 760 LFTi is their only nice new knife but it's fraught with QC problems.

Hope to post a bit of knife porn soon...

i dun understand, these knives are made of high grade metal. without the oil, they would rust?

If you want rust proof get a Spyderco Salt series. The H1 steel has no carbon as such it does not rust. All parts are H1 steel and titanium. They've tested it in saltwater, various chems and acids and the metal parts survived unscathed. Only part that will "rust" is the etching on the blade. All steel will rust if the conditions are right/ wrong. Some are more rust resistant like 420J but you won't want a knife in 420J unless all you want to do is cut butter all day long. Wash and keep your blades oiled before storing and they'll be OK.

You don't really need Paracord to make knife lanyards. Most cords will do but obviously braided ropes looks a lot better as they do not fray easily and are a lot smoother. If you want cheap then you can get braided ropes from army mkt but there's not a lot of choices in terms of colour. If you insist on the real deal then try a site called supplycaptain.com. Very good prices and very fast and reasonable shipping rates. Their cord is true 550lbs lines and has a 7strand core, some stores will try to sell you inferior cord at the same price. Not very critical if you are gutting the cord but I do use mine on camping and fishing trips. They have almost every colour and they also stock the thinner 125lbs version which I much prefer.

I glue my sandpaper onto glass using spray adhesive. Glass provides a very smooth and flat surface. Go slow and don't force the blade down, the weight of the knife plus a bit more will do. Change side only when you can feel a burr by running your fingernail along the side of the cutting edge. Those knives should be easy to sharpen. No idea what steel they are using. At best AUS8 or 440C, at worst 440A... Whichever it is it should be easy to sharpen.

Good idea learning to sharpen with something cheaper... Less heartache if you mess up. You don't need to spend a lot to get into the hobby. There are plenty of great knives if you are willing to spend a bit more. I like a lot of the stuff that DX sells but be careful with their knives. If the lock fails during heavy use you can injure yourself very very badly. My suggestion for cheap and good are as follows...

Kabar Dozier (spear point, drop point etc. many colours) - Under USD20
Spyderco Tenacious - around USD35
Benchmade Pika - around USD35
Boker Trance - Under USD30
Boker Subcom/Keycom/Wharcom/Rescom - Under USD30
Buck Bantam - under USD30
Buck Vantage - around USD35

Manay many more...

If you are looking to grab a few knives, I usually purchase them from lighthound.. they ship international from 14.95 onwards so it's quite decent if you are looking at small knives and some other camping equipment... their shipping is one of the cheapest of the sites I've found but their selections are generic..

ooo thanks thanks. I tried free hand but i kinda don't know how to feel the burr or even if i'm sharpening it right. I kinda messed up already with an unknown number to strokes on both sides. I think my dealextreme knife is 440C. Saw it on some comments.

Doesn't matter how many strokes you do as long as you keep the angle right, to do this you need to go slow. Even if you use jigs and guide you'd still need to learn to feel or look for the burr. Sharpen on the side with the burr until it is as small as possible. Actually to practice freehand I suggest getting a high carbon blade as they are a lot easier to sharpen, just a big PITA due to our humid weather.

Careful how you ask your friend to label the package... Obviously labeling is "dagger" and such is a big no no.. But false declaration can get him in trouble.

Damn those ICA officers... :( Opened my letterbox everyday last few days expecting to see my Orange Millitary and Lava only to find a notice from SingPost to collect my knives at Paya Lebar. Don't know how many times I need to collect there which is why I think USPS 1st class inter. is better... USPS Priority International always get hijacked by them as it requires the recipient to sign for the package so they think it has a high value . Think ICA is must be really hungry for tax money (GST) but too bad for them I usually buy stuff for less than $400 in total... Hope the 2 other shipments get through ok.

these knives are collectable?

Anything can be a collectible... Stamps, Coke memorabilia, toys... Some knives are collectibles but I'm sure quite a few of us use our knives too. Most of mine are what you call "safe queens" or part of a collection but a few (less collectible, less expensive ones) are users. They do appreciate in value but it takes time and a lot of research. Some discontinued models just end up forgotten, some remain popular and fetch a higher value on the retail market. Good example is the Benchmade AFCK. It has been discontinued for a few years but is selling for a lot more now. They recently reissued 500 pieces and were gone withing 2-3 days and are already selling on eBay for USD300+ dollars and there are people willing to fork out that kind of money. I recently sold 3 Spyderco cheapies for about SGD60 in profit even though one of them was in used but decent condition. How much something is worth depends only on how much someone is willing to pay for it.
