ABOUT ME: Female, 23 this year. I live in BISHAN, and have been looking for a private driving instructor around my area because I am lazy to travel. Of course my ideal would have been a driving instructor who can pick me up from my house. I don't really have a preference where I take my driving test.

FINDING A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR: I called up three private instructors - 2 recommanded by friends, 1 recommanded by SSDC (highest passing rate instructor). All are Chinese-speaking, were rather impatient with me over the phone, and were trying to push me to their friends. I did not want that. I started reading this forum, and decided on calling MR. WILLIAM 90215833. He was polite and patient with me, and told me sorry he's busy these days and refer me to a friend of his, also named WILLIAM >>> MR. WILLIAM SNG. I agreed to this referral because Mr. William sounded sincere and nice.

MR. WILLIAM SNG: 98188851. $26/hr non-peak and $28/hr peak. Min 1.5hours. Registeration $50. Cancellation/time change in less than 24 hours results in 50% loss of fee. Currently an instructor at BBDC but will be leaving in Jan (I think). Will pick up at Yio Chu Kang MRT. English speaking.

FIRST CLASS: Scheduled at 8pm for 1.5hours. I arrived at YCK MRT at 7:50pm, and he was already there! He talks a lot, kept talking about benefits of private instructor lol. Drove to the private housing estates around YCK. Very patitent with me! PM me if you want details of my first class.

Hope to be back to share more about him. I intended to have intensive lessons till New Year as I am having holiday now. But as he is still teaching at BBDC, his schedule is tight. Hence, only weekends and night =(
glad that u are finding ur PI good..

mine was okok lor.. my ex-PI(I alread PASS! hahaha) very tok cock one.. so every time i one ear in one ear out.. end up, two of my friends and I all 1 time pass!

The Ex-PI I had will pick you up from where you live and send you back so not bad la.. he not pack one cause he don want to be pack.. if i not wrong.. driving old vios as he find the new vios's back side very high up and make it diff to learn..

Anyone at the BB/CCK area want take manual lessons, can try Lim Boon Seng Driving Services.
Call 93835050 (his assistant answers it 80% of the times) / 96207188 (Mr Lim himself answers)
They teach both auto/manual but I have no idea how good is their auto.

Here's my personal experience. I am currently taking manual, probably going for 1st time test Mar/Apr 2010.

Firstly Mr Lim has many instructors, so be sure who you ask for when you book. Now this is very impt as you wouldn't want to waste your time and money if the instructor not productive. I suggest go for Kenny or Sam. Never go for Chong or you'll regret.

Kenny

A chinese-speaking uncle loved by many students. His english is not that perfect and speaks some hokkien at times, but he can be understood 95% of the times without needing him to repeat. If you want to be under him, got to book like 1 month in advance else hard to get slots (even those "obiang" timing ones). Have been under him a couple times but heard his leg somewhat injured, currently on leave. :( He will scold if we make mistakes but not very harsh, most impt, will EXPLAIN PATIENTLY why those errors should not be made and how to correct them. If you turn into the wrong lane or stall car or mount kerb, he would start saying "be careful this one, the tester will deduct __ points". He's quite professional, attention is not easily diverted by personal affairs.

Sam

A bald malay uncle who teaches in 95% english and 5% malay. Loves to drive around Bukit Panjang or in the circles around BBDC. Might visit toilet during lesson but he's quite fast at that. :s7: Might see him send sms-es sometimes but his attention is still on the road. The back passenger seat of the car is usually full of his personal belongings but he's professional and never touches them during lesson. If you're unsure of anything taught, you could ask again politely without getting yelled at.

Chong

Engage at your own risk! Firstly she loves to be on phone yakking away merrily during lesson. Have often overheard the other party of her convo being scolded for god knows what reason. Speaks mostly chinese with some dialect and quite vulgar both on phone and when teaching. Secondly you better pray you make ZERO mistakes while in her car, otherwise your ears would be left with no peace. Seriously, I would be deaf before she goes out of breath if I make any little error (I'm an average learner and don't expect me to be perfect). Thirdly, she herself does not have good road habits so how you'd expect her to teach well. She likes to speed (100 km/h for a 60 km/h road ), snake in and out of lanes even when its already quite congested, and she seldoms signals when she's turning left or right. Any error you make would be greeted with the response "Havent you read your theory book??".. Which leaves me thinking about the need for an instructor if books could teach  Lastly you dont get what you pay for under her, she eats about 10 minutes of your time each 2 hour lesson.

* Need any referrals or more info, PM me.*

EDIT:

They have many mostly black Honda City cars they use for manual, so if you're in the BB/CCK area and see those with plates 2122/9955, its one of them.

If any one here got any info about Kenny/Sam, please PM me. Am looking for their full names to check passing rate on TP site. (I address them as Mr Kenny/ Mr Sam during lesson) Thanks!

Maybe, I don't know... Haha.

My TP is far away... I wanted to book the other time, but the only open slots were during CNY, so no go... Then the other day, first few days of March slots were opened, but Ong told me to book a bit later on 6th or 7th (Saturday and Sunday?! -_-). I'll wait until he returns from his holiday to firm up on this. Definitely not taking on weekends though. lol.

Never take on weekday evenings unless you're very confident of your driving.. The road will be congested with many people knocking off and so on, much harder to drive. From my buddies experience, best time to take test is weekday, early afternoon.

Its quite the norm rate nowdays. For manual, up to 30/hr (inclusive weekends/PH) is acceptable IMO. Reject if its more than that.

I'm a lady FYI.

And I didn't learn from many instructors. I called the boss' number for booking, and they were assigned to me. First time I didnt know who best, so when they offered me Chong I agreed. After a few times with her I decided enough was enough, I went to talk to the boss. Asked for Kenny (through friend's WOM recommendation) and was given. Then under Kenny a few times, sadly his leg got injured, still currently on MC. I didn't want to wait for Kenny to return (depending on his leg, might be a matter of weeks) as I was worried about forgetting how to drive by that time. So Sam was offered as replacement, and I took that. Found Sam acceptable so sticking with him for the time being.

Can someone recommend me a good and patient private instructor for class 3A (auto) around CCK or BBDC area? Also I work around Bukit Timah area, don't know if it's more convenient to learn around there or not.

Anyway, I should be taking my theories at BBDC, if that's how it works. Sorry I am a bit confused with the procedures :p

Just asking... any students under Mr Ng? Teaching 3A PDI at YCK SSDC. I called up Mr Liew and he referred me to Mr Ng due to no slots available.

Don't know how good is he... planning to take the 1st lesson from him this coming Thursday...
